Hello, Theresa! How are you?

I've never taken it, but I do know that Trileptal has various uses, when it comes to treating mental health issues, because of the way it acts on brain chemicals.

Learn more Trileptal details here.

How long have you been taking it?

It may cause side effects, such as nausea, blurred vision, drowsiness and fatigue.

Re: Verwon (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Hello! I realize this target specific subject on this thread has not been addressed in it appears now in over four (4) years!! But, when I read, about, the conversation starter, "Theresa" from September 20, of 2013, and of Vernon on that same date
I felt I instantly MUST make my experience with "Trileptal" AND with many, many ethical pharmaceuticals, in general, grouped in most countries of the modern industrial world as the following:

A anti-psychotic ethical medication, and/or "Dopamine Receptor Antagonists" both from the Chemical Classification of such groups of ethical pharmaceuticals as the old school traditional "Phenothiazines" and often in the USA as also the
"new generation" antipsychotic medications, I shall digress...

I only want to state I am not a Medical Doctor, but, I have been a patient of multiple Medical Doctors, for decades, the most common type of a M.D was a USA American Medical Board certified Psychiatrist, or a AMA Neurologist, for the past, four (4) decades since I was age 21 years old!!! I have 3 college degrees and am also a USA state board certified General Contractor, etc.

I tend to type a wall of text, my statement, it is only my two cents worth, is, for this group of meds, IMHO, to run like hell as far as you can to NOT take any of these meds, due to massive side effects! I have experienced, as, I felt for a long
time, I was treated like a "lab rat" and, that was from the 1970's, and again, many years later, for a brief acute personal issue, as recently as a time frame around 2005 to 2010!!!

The ethical medication of this thread is about the med with the proprietary protected name known as "Trileptal" correct? Yes, I have been prescribed Trileptal as recently as the years of around 2005 to 2007, and no way in hxll would I ever take Trileptal again!! Why? The side effects so well described by Verwon's post #1 on Sept 20 of 2013!!! Also, this med gave me an immediate skin rash so well described in a similar thread on medschat!

IMHO every medication I shall list, caused me such a prolific amount of side effects, that the dose I took or time element involved, taken by the med itself, all alone or combined with any other prescription meds, by my MD, together, were, extremely negative side effects, meaning very unacceptable side effects, on a cost to benefit, basis, and, for the most part I was not even able to barely function, and certainly not even hold down gainful employment, nor continue as a undergraduate or graduate student or combinations of both while under the influence of "Trileptal" including the following meds taken each separately during my adult lifetime: really referring in 2008 as Adult Education night school in my neighborhood community college!

Phenothiazines:

Chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
Prochlorperazine (Compazine)
Trifluoperazine (Stelazine)
Perphenazine (Trilafon) "two solid years of this med alone"
Mesoridazine (Serentil)
Thioridazine (Mellaril) "a nightmare of a once easily prescribed med in USA" 70's
Butyrophenone, which in USA is "Haloperidol" a/k/a "Haldol" 1 week was plenty!!

New Generation Antipsychotic meds: post 2001 meds!!

Risperidone (Risperdal) "in even a tiny weeny dose a powerful med, that totally crippled me with side effects such as very bad headaches, lethargy, weight gain, and extreme male ED, in all areas from the A to the Z.

Olanzapine (Zyprexa) Even the most tiny tablet dose of 2.5 mg one week was enough. It was even "worse in side effects, than the new generation Risperidone, (Risperdal) that I was titrated from tablets, 0.5 mg up to 1 mg of the tablet for exactly one full year mfg in USA was patent holder Janssen LP as was, the Zyprexa tabs were by Eli Lilly!

Quetiapine fumarate - This is the very worst ethical pharmaceutical med I have experienced, in my adult life, in terms of very bad and crippling side effects, and, my USA Psychiatrist, started me with a very small tab of only 50 mg per night with
water, and I was titrated up to 200 mg per night per day during the entire 12 month time frame of the year 2008!

I will note I have known some very good males and both females, who all were middle aged, college educated adults with a DX that included either BiPolar I or the much different BiPolar II Axis I Disorder, in the USA and the majority of those friends, and contacts I knew on a personal level gained extreme measurable benefits!! from USA Seroquel and a co-worker and long time male friend of mine was taking 400 mg of Seroquel per day (quetiapine fumarate) for years and years, with no "long term major side effects after his body adjusted to this med" in fact he was the definition of the late 1980's pop song of "Don't Worry, Be Happy" but for me... on more than one night I was so knocked out after my evening dose was titrated up to as high as 200 mg, my perception was I was so knocked out, and, such a brain dead asleep individual, I accidentally tripped my expensive security alarm in my home, (I live alone) and I do not even remember talking to ADT Security dept to give them my"Password" to stop Law Enforcement from rushing to my residence for a possible "B & E" I was so punch drunk on that dose, it scared me to death the next AM!!! Even on a dose of only 50 mg, I always had a nasty hangover, and, I was always late for work, I got placed on probation, and my co-workers once sent me home I was so very sleepy and lethargic, and, it felt like my IQ, example had dropped from a 110 to a 90 on the Stanford Benet Scale of intelligence Quotient as I had problems even ringing up sales on a PC combo cash register at my performance oriented profession!!!

I have had many DX's given to me in my adult life such as depends on the time frame but it began in my early 20's the 1970's started out with a simple Depression with marked anxiety, then, over the years, went from just the DX of either Major Depression in partial remission or with such DX's as Dysthmic Disorder, to the following:

Attention Deficit Disorder, I got that diagnosis at age 44 years old, either, ADHD combined type or Inattentive type, or once for two years, a switch for two years to BiPolar II Disorder.......which came as a result of a very psychological violent expensive Divorce, and a very unnecessary Restraining order placed on me by my very mentally unstable ex wife, who, had, her own Psychiatrist and took 17 pills a day from a family of at least 4 different meds, I'm sorry for going off
topic........

My Dx was changed by two Ph.D's in talking therapy of a total of 9 years and by two MSW's that I now had ADD inattentive type and PTSD, and, later, I got the DX from my Psychiatrist of now 17 years in a row, of, co-morbid OCD Anxiety Disorder, with some "traits" of the now antiquated Axis II Personality Disorder called formerly Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder, now, just a Personality Disorder NOS for Not Otherwise Specified.

In conclusion anti psychotics and all mentioned in this very long wall of text is that, I have seen many males and females from age 20 to their retirement years who can take some measurable antipsychotics, usually for a long term bona fide
real deal simple Dx of BiPolar Disease, it is as simple as that. Some need one of the meds above or a combination of Lithium or, Depakote, or just the USA med called "Tegretol" by Novartis or just......

Seroquel by Astra Zeneca, but I am highly allergic, IMHO to all of those meds including "Trileptal" sorry for being likely so wearing on one's eyes but I have had about every known cognitive behavioral therapy one on one to group therapy
I'd estimate over US $225,000.00 of therapy from age, 20 to age 50 and that was over 10 years ago!!

Does anyone have anymore questions?
