Does Amoxicillin Go Bad With Age? (Page 4)

Updated

I bought 100 amoxicillin caps about 3 years ago and stored them in a dark place and I was curious if they would still be good to take.

I read many replies and comments throughout this thread. I found no definitive answer about taking old antibiotics. I decided, what the hec, 2009 label, been stored in a cool dark place, didn't smell. This is key. Milk always smells when bad and so does meat sometimes before the expiration dates. Trust the nose. Have taken them for about 3 days now, feeling better. I may double up the dosage cause I think someone a while back stated they loose a little potency.

I know this crazy, my cat hard fatty sebaceous tumor, it's growing, it's hard and And looks like a cauliflower. The problem is is that I have to keep her neck wrap because it's becoming infected and the vet does't think that is cancerous, I don't have the money to have cut off, when I went To the vet I
did get some and get some amoxicillin for her and they gave way too much.Do you think liquid amoxicillin Would still be good after three weeks? I think the infection is making her sick. It's not the Medicine that is expensive it's, the Vet appointments that are expensive, so I'm just trying to save money by using the same amoxicillin. I have to give her something.

Publix doesn't charge for some medications. Ammoxicilin is free of charge there.

I took expired amoxicillin from 2010 this morning. Though the sore throat has subsided, symptoms including explosive diarrhea and vaginal vagititus have instead taken its place. I'm a man btw

Amoxycillin capsules last up to three years, after that they start to lose their strength. Definitely throw them away if they are more than four years old.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out two weeks ago. I was prescribed amoxi as well as pain medicine. I haven't been back for a check up but I think I might have an infection in my gums from food or something. Anyways I found a bottle of amoxi but it's from 2004, so that's ten years old. It's been in my bathroom cabinet for a long time. There's still a good amount left and it's a smaller dosage 250mg but it's the tablets. I didn't know if they were safe to keep or throw out

Certainly they are still good after only a few months Mary just remember if the flem you are coughing up or blowing from your nose is green or even brown then you should consider antibiotics. Bee i would NOT take those being they are 10 years old. you need to remember antibiotics are organic you would in essence be only taking sugar pills with the possibility of bad diarrhea.

It does loose potency after about 18 months from time of purchase but it is still effective. I had my spleen removed when I was 5 and had to take penicillin. I was on 500 mg a day for 20 yrs. finally my doctor said I probably built up an ammunity too it. Now my PC gives me a scrip every 3 yrs for amoxicillin just in case I get an infection. You did the right thing by keeping it in a cool, dry, dark place. Good luck

WE AR ALL TAKING ANTIBIOICS ALL THE TME!!! It is not smart if you don't take the entire prescription because of building up resistance of course, but look into HOW MANY antibiotics are used for cattle poultry and other meat!!! It's in our meat our drinking water and basically everywhere at this point.

I used to raise chickens (3 to 5) and bought chicks. They have feed WITH ANTIBIOTICS in them for the first 3 months. You're supposed to stop giving it to them before they start laying of course, but look at the millions (billions) of meat animals we go through in the US! Do you seriously think the 6week old 5 lb chickens or beef you buy is not Filled with them??? Look it up I dare you (of course you'll be lucky to find ANY info that's less than 5 years old). There are laws in place now to even talk bad about food. How many beef recalls do you hear about yet look at the recall list for ANY SUPERMARKET CHAIN!

Taking the expired amoxicillin for this one illness will most likely not cause you personal harm. But you have to weigh the benefits and risks of taking an antibiotic that may have reduced potency. The potency may still be enough for it to work but it may not. But when confronted with the same situation, after having done a lot of research on the topic, I reminded myself that even newly manufactured antibiotics sometimes aren't potent enough to kill an infection in one round and then require a second visit to the doctor. I concluded that the worst that would happen would be that I would have to go to the doctor for the US govt mandated expensive permission slip to get un-expired antibiotics. I was fine and the infection went away for a few months before my deviated septum trapped some more bacteria in my sinuses, at which time I let the infection get bad before going to the doctor for the permission slip, because I couldn't afford to go and had to cut something else out of my budget that month. If I had still had 5yo amoxicillin, I would have taken it again.

For the soap boxers here: I am a very globally minded person and have spoken at times against over-use of antibiotics. The biggest contributor to antibiotic overuse is the person who buys and consumes foods every single day that are laced with them, not individuals who have legitimate reasons for taking antibiotics at specified short periods of time in order to get back to work to have money to pay bills and taxes. If you want to reduce the overuse of antibiotics, boycott foods that are laced with them instead of jumping on some innocent fellow who is sick and needs medicine to get better.

Oh we get it mr/ms high and mighty. Sometimes you just have left over. Like my dentist prescribed it, then I ended up having the tooth pulled. and today I have an earache and the doctors office in the box just closed. im taking the amoxicillin so I get a head start on the dosage they will prescribe for me tomorrow!

So will you please stop preaching about the finishing of the medications.
