Coumadin Vs. Xarelto

Updated

I've been on coumadin since 2001 when I had a dvt and have had no problem with it...ever. Now, my doctor wants me to try xarelto, I'm scared. Should I stay on coumadin or make the switch? Thanks!!

Well, in this case, what I'd suggest doing is going to your doctor and discussing it with them. Schedule a consultation, so you can have a sit down chat about it and ask them why they want you to make the switch, specifically what benefits do they see you getting from the new medication that you don't get with the old.

It is really the best way to calm your fears and get the precise details you need that will enable you to make an informed decision regarding what the best choice is for you.

Does anyone else have any advice to add?

I had trouble stabilising my INR, and needed a high dose of Warfarin, which caused my hair to fall out. My haemotologist changed me over to Xarelto. After 3 months I'm very happy. No more INR checks, my hair has started to grow back, and it all feels so very easy. The only problem us that there is no antidote, so if you should have a troublesome bleed, it could be a big issue. The 1/2 life of Xarelto is 12 hours, so That means 24 hours should vastly reduce it's action, and 36 hours almost clears it from your system. I have had to miss a dose occasionally when having minor procedures, but obviously then I was under close supervision for DVT during that time.

Hi ive just gone on xalto or rivaroxaban after being treated with enaxaban injections for dvt in thigh. i also have antiphospolipid syndrome. i was very scared but up to now have been fine on it. for me its preferable to warfrin as your bloods dont need monitoring or your diet. taking new meds is scary hope it works well for you

I changed from Coumadin to Xarelto back in May 2013 and now I have headaches. Is this common?? I spoke to my neurologist, Rheumolotolgist and family doctor. They don't know how to handle this concern. But my neurologist scheduled an MRI and that came back normal. Now he wants to do a spinal tap and I really don't want that done. What is your thoughts on this??

Do NOT have a spinal tap some until you have talked to at least 1 reputable HEMOTOLOGIST (blood doctor)! "If you have epidural or spinal anesthesia or a spinal puncture while taking a 'blood thinner' such as rivaroxaban(brand name is Xarelto), you are at risk of having a blood clot form in or around your spine that could cause you to become paralyzed." From the following website: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a611049.html

That those physicians you spoke with want to perform this procedure while you're taking rivaroxaban gives me the serious within! Headaches are a normal side effect of rivaroxaban, but because headaches can also indicate possible stroke (a brain clot), you should definitely have it checked out. But, you need a physician who's not just familiar with you, but is knowledgeable about your conditions and treatments for them. If your physician prescribed Xarelto, they should darn well be up-to-date on what it's used for, and should be continuously looking for newer, better solutions, and should be continuously gathering info on your conditions so you can get the best treatment possible...

My physician had me get a CT scan of my head area-no contrast dye IV is necessary for this check up. Only required me to lie still for a few minutes. Hope this helps you.

I have been on Xarelto and then Eliquis for 6 months now for a PE. I have had all kinds of new health problems as soon as I started Xarelto, and then moved to Eliqish. I have chronic chest pain, bloating, esophagus and stomach pain, dizziness, tiredness, feeling foggy. Eight years ago I was on Coumadin with no problems, whatsoever. I'm going to talk with my doctor about getting put back on Coumadin.

Re: Little Purrr (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

I think the most important reason is why you are taking Warfarin. My dr in a new state did not read my medical records. Sadly they put me on Eliquis. Within days I was unable to breathe...then they switched me to Xarelto... I felt good not having to take tests and watched what I ate, however it was short lived. My disease can only be treated with Warfarin. I was told that in 2011 but no one seems to listen. I finally saw a Hemertologist who put me back on Warfarin or Coumadin. They are according to the pharmacist, one in the same medication.

Re: LadyM (# 7) Expand Referenced Message

Does anyone really know if Coumadin and Warfarin are the same medication? I have been told that Coumadin has been removed they are no longer making it... HOW DO I FIND OUT BEFORE I LOSE MY LIFE? Yes I called the doctors office and asked. I don’t know what to think.

Stay on Coumadin. Xaralto is very expensive. I was on Coumadin then switched by doctor to Xaralto. After further testing I was switched back to Coumadin actually warfarin. What is the best time to take warfarin.
