Cotrimoxazole 800 Mg And Pregnancy

i am 2 months pregnant and had taken 6 tabs of cotrimoxazole in one time, does it affect the fetus? How severe would be the damage to the fetus? For this drug i had taken, Do i need to continue Or terminate my pregnancy?

Hi Lony - Co-Trimoxazole (containing Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim as the active ingredients) is reported to be in Pregnancy Category C in the US and Australia. This is defined as "Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks." [1]

With that said, I cannot really give you conclusive information as to how your fetus would be affected. My thought at this point is you should be fine (if you are not taking any more of it) ... HOWEVER I recommend that you consult with your physician (OBGYN) throughout the pregnancy and mention your concerns to them. They could probably run tests as well to determine the health of your fetus.

hi! Roy, thank you for replying to my message. i would just like to give you more detailed info. about what i have done mistake in my pregnancy. April 6, 2011 - start of my first day of menstruation. April 16, 2011 - had unprotected sex. May 3, 2011 - had overdose taken 6 tabs Cotrimoxazole 800 mg/ in 1 minute interval. Now i am afraid of the consequences. Is the damage on my fetus brain and other organs is at high rate or low rate %? Pls.give me your opinion. Tnx.

From what I understand it is generally deemed high risk to take this during pregnancy, and it should only be taken under the strict supervision of your doctor. I think that the best option right now would be to fill your doctor in on what happened if you can, and they can probably assure you on what the best course of action would be. Since it sounds like you are early in your pregnancy the fetus might still be okay (since most reports of this drug having adverse effects have pertained to later term pregnancies). Roy, thank you very very much for your advice... to all girls out there.. never attempt to take overdose antibiotics during pregnancy... it will just worsen your situation.. you only have to suffer long term consequences with the mistake you have done to your child.. i regret having done such mistake. I promise myself never to do it again.. Tnx

im delayed for 9 days,il take PT,at first its invalid,after 10mins.it gets two lines which states im positive.i have UTI, and i take cotrimoxaxole everyday.after 4 days,i got bleeding for one day,the nxt day,it stops..but after a day,i got bleed again for 3 regular days.im wonderin if im still pregnant,since total of my days delayed as of now is 19.,i didnt yet go to the doctor.pls give advice.tnx

Hi Roy am one month pregnant I have been taking cotrimoxazle 2 tablets daily. I started taking before getting pregnant but since I discovered the pregnancy have been having this stomach pain. How safe is Ma baby.
