Cost Of Medication

Updated

I have a question about my medication prescription, my dr had me on 240 10/325 generic Norco (hydrocodone) a month (1-2 every 4-6 hours max dose of 8) he recently needed to bump up the quantity to 270 (9 a day) but apparently my insurance only covers 240 a month. I was wondering if it was possible that the dr could write me the script for the 270 and the pharmacist charge my insurance for 240 of the prescription and charge me for the other 30 or if it all has to be charged to either insurance or me. I live in NY state, any info would be greatly appreciated!

No, I don't think that will help.

There is actually a limit on how much your pharmacy can give you each month and it doesn't matter if your doctor writes the prescription for more. There are government regulations that dictate such, they can't give you more than the maximum dosage amount.

And really, all the Acetaminophen over a long period of time is very dangerous for you, it may cause liver damage or failure.

Have you considered trying a different medication that doesn't have the Acetaminophen in it?

It has nothing to do with regulations on how much the pharmacy can give or anything like that, it's that my insurance only covers up to a certain amount, its all insurance based, which is why i was asking if pharmacies can have two seperate ppl paying instead of one ie my insurance paying the usual 240 and me paying the other 30. I'm not the one who even asked to be put on this med, I hate taking any type of meds, it's just either I take meds, or I die, literally. I have little choice but to listen to my drs if I want any chance of quality of life. The dr tells me what to take and I listen, Ive never asked him or questioned his medical decisions upon my health issues. I figure he has a license and a lot more knowledge than I have

The way your dr has you taking them exceeds the max amount of tylenol the FDA says to go by, that is why your insurance com won't pay for it. Also, in New York, all hydrocodone containing products became a Schedule II at the end of February 2013. There would have to be 2 rx's for the same med, written by your dr and I seriously doubt any pharmacy would fill it due to the new New York Law that went into effect in Feb.
