Cost Of Iv Medications

Updated

I go to ER 1-2x/mo for pain. Always same "cocktail" - Dilaudid, Toradol, Zofran, & Ativan. Works like a charm and I am usually in/out in about 3-4 hours. Only IV delivery seems to be effective. Doc would like me to be able to get these meds in some other way than ER due to excessive cost but can't seem to find a place willing to administer. Is there are reason I couldn't learn to do it at home? Would home health be an option? Is home health ever "on call?"

Hello
I am in the process of getting a pain pump but I have been hearing a lot about this homecare stuff and they come in and give you your meds I am 35 and not really thrilled about the pain pump but I can not hold on to my meds cause I always run out its not cause I take dubble or triple the amount at one time but my time frames for taken my meds is every 6 to 8 hrs and that just don't cutt it I need my meds every 4 to 6 hrs really its 4 to 5 but the drs don't want to do that cause of my age I'm like what can I do then so at one point I started drinking and that just totally messed things up with me and my family I am not drinking anymore but I am starting to get to that point where my dr don't wanna up my meds and they suggest a pain pump so I'm like eh I dunno what to do I hear good and bad about the pump then I am hearing about this homecare stuff I'm thinking the homecare is for ppl who are at the end of their road on this earth so I dunno if I should even bother looking into that I really want to get a part time job I can work when I am on the right dose I do not nod out like a a lot of ppl say they do I can work and keep my mind on my job without hurting I dunno ppl say I'm an odd ball cause the amount I take they say they would be passed out not me I'm the opposite also I dunno how mucho of a factor this is but I had weightloss surgery and I have been told that the obsobsion I can't spell but the amount that actually remains in my systeem cause everything leaves my system faster now then it used to so if anyone can even understand what I just rambled about I would be grateful to hear from you thanks

What is your general location?

There should be some type of outpatient facility that would do this, if you're doctor ordered it and your insurance covers it.

I think more than the expense, since it isn't your doctor paying the bill, it's most likely that they are concerned about your tying up ER resources for something that isn't actually a life threatening emergency. That is generally greatly frowned upon.

As to home health, no they aren't usually an on-call type of service, they have set times that they do their thing.

The pain pump that's been mentioned could be an idea. Has your doctor looked into that?

And yes, CJK, home care is supposed to be for those who are completely unable to care for themselves and most insurance will not cover it, otherwise.

What's causing said pain? Based upon the origin of the pain there are many less invasive things that can be done. Has your dr. Tried prescribing fentanyl patches yet?
