Does Cerefolin NAC have to be
prescribed by a doctor?
I just read that it can help with
depression. Is this true?

Yes, this is a prescription only medication, used to treat vitamin deficiencies. It is not approved to treat depression and I have not found any information on it being used in that capacity.

My doctor has prescribed Cerefolin NAC for depression. I am 40 years old and am also being treated with Welbutrin SR 150 mg three times a day for about ten months. I have been taking Cerefolin NAC for 18 days and have noticed a huge difference in the way I feel.

I was precribed Cerefolin by a Nuerologist because of the severe fatigue and memory lost and cognitive issues with my fibromyalgia. I was wondering how it has helped you, how quickly you see results...and is there a way to get discounts since my insurance does not cover it. I also take other Bcomplex vitamins...should I stop taking them while trying this new medication. Thanks for any comments

My gp also prescribed cerefolin to me to accompany my antidepressant. We have increased my dosage of Lexapro several times, and each time it would work for a while and then the benefits would slowly wear off- my metabolism would slow down, severe fatigue would set in, I'd lose memory and concentration and have really crazy dreams every night. She said those symptoms were in line with low serotonin production, and that the SSRI would work for a while, then deplete the serotonin completely. She said that research was being done to prove that some people are genetically unable to methylate (activate) folic acid, which is used in serotonin production. Cerefolin is taken as an already methylated form of folic acid that the body can use to make the needed serotonin. I started feeling better after only 7 days of being on this vitamin.

Carrie , it sounds like you have one smart GP! Most Drs don't know that the SSRI only work for a little while , then deplete the serotonin. I would love to have a Dr who knew that and knew to use vitamin forms instead!!!

Jill, my pharmacy wanted $475 for a 90-day supply. However, my doctor called it in to Brand Direct Health, a discount mail order pharmacy in Louisiana. They were super helpful and a 90-day supply is only $144. (They are a legitimate outfit, I do not work for them, this is not a commercial.)

Good Luck!

Brand Direct called me today (11/21/13) to verify my refill of Cerefolin. Their prices are going up too. I paid $148.95 for this 3 month supply but she said next refill will be going up $10/month, so I'll pay $178.95 next time. If you find it cheaper elsewhere, please share where!
