Benign Brain Tumor And Medication

Updated

My daughter was diagnosed a week ago with a benign brain tumor on the right side of her brain. She goes numb on the whole left side of her body and the right side of her face. She also has horrible headaches. The doctors have her on Divalproex ec 500 mg and Butal/acetamino/CG50-325-40TAB. She has been trying to work but the headache medicine makes her dizzy and feel drunk. The seizure medicine works sometimes but not all the time. The headache medicine works but the dizziness etc makes it so she can't work when she takes this . Is there anything else that she could take that would help her? Is there some home remedy that we can use along with these meds that would help her. She is very depressed right now and her emotions are all over the place. What can I do to help her through this time?

We still don't know the type of tumor she has. It is 2cm and is on the right side of her brain. If someone out there who has gone through this I would love to hear from you. I don't know what to expect. Is there something we can do here at home to ease the headaches? If they do surgery what are the risks? Thank you.

Hello, Shiela! How is your daughter doing?

The Codeine in that medication for the headaches is really a very mild opiate, so it's likely not strong enough to help her much. However, anything stronger is also liable to cause her to feel dizzy and drowsy. What that's going to come down to here is dealing with the headaches or taking something for them that may cause such side effects. She really needs to decide which is the best approach.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

As to the surgery, there is some risk of brain damage and such, but it rarely occurs with modern surgical techniques.

The tumor could also be contributing to her depression and to her feeling emotional.

What has her doctor advised?

We saw the doctors on Friday. They said the tumor shouldn't be causing her any problems. The headaches I believe were stress because after she found out the type of tumor she has and that it won't turn to cancer and may or may not grow she has been doing better. She still has some depression as her job hasn't let her come back to work yet and she really does need to work as she has bills and rent. She has a little weakness in her left arm but it isn't bad like it was. The numbness is totally gone now. So we will just wait and see. The decision was not to do surgery now but see how it is in a year. Do a new MRI and see what it shows. If she starts having any more problems she is to go back. She does still get dizzy if she turns around real fast things like that. Thank you for your comment. I truly appreciate your help.
