Alabama Pain Refill Changes

Updated

My pain doctor just informed me that he can longer offer refills on my norco because of it being classed as a schedule 2 drug norcotic now. That means i must go every month now and pay for an office visit. I know that is true in New York but i am not aware of any changes in Alabama law. As I do not have insurance now that would be a huge added expense to me. It would be a big added expensive even if I did with a $60 copay. Does anyone know of this change in legislation that I cant find?

Hello, Craig! How are you?

Yes, this change actually goes into effect at the beginning of October for the entire U.S.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

My husband and I are both chronic pain patients, and we know this law went into effect. What doctors can do rather than seeing you every month is to give you prescriptions with a future date on which they can be filled. We each see our doctor once every three months. We get three prescriptions at each three month visit. One is good to fill on that day, the others state the future date when they can be filled. No need to see a doctor every month just to get a prescription even with this new law. Only problem is....don't lose the two other future date prescriptions you are given as the doc you see may not wish to rewrite them -- understandable, from the DEA's perspective, I suppose.

Good luck!
