Addicition???

Updated

My son is 14 and has been taking Concerta for the past few years. Although his dose fluctuated, he was not perscribed the highest dose available. Now his doctors have changed his prescription to AdderallXR. Because the active ingredients are so similar to Meth, and knowing how very addicitive Amphedimines are, what are the chances he will be hooked unkowingly to speed and become one of the many lying, underhanded criminals associated with young men in our society ? Does it increase the probability?

I took ritalin, concerta, and now adderal XR 15's and hate them. Try to teach your son good study habits. It's better than taking the pills. But if he is really ADHD then don't stop.
Also he won't become a meth addict or an amphedimine addict as long as its used the way it was prescribed.

I am on Adderall XR 30mg and am prescribed to take it twice daily if I need to, but never do. Your son is NOT going go be a meth-addict 1just because he's on Adderall. First of all, the doctor will know the signs of addiction and second off...if he is going to be a meth-addict he'd already be playing around with his concerta. I prefer Adderall to Concerta because Concerta gave me SEVERE headaches and didn't work nearly as well as Adderall. Dexadrin is also a good one. It's only ONE of the ingredients in adderall !

I was diagnosed with ADHD after a long history of taking pills to cope with depression and rebellion against authority. My dr. said I was trying to self-medicate and prescribed me with Adderall XR, 50 mg. a day. Being a former pill addict, if anyone were to become an addict on this stuff, it would have been me. Anyway, since being diagnosed and prescribed, I have never had any intention, or tempation, toward abusing my meds, and since have achieved a BS from PSU with a double minor and am 1 year into a very successful career. Don't worry. You're son is fine. The media can make the world seem so harsh. If you love your son, any signs of addiction will show up in time for you to intervene and take him off the meds. In the meantime, don't worry. These meds are highly regulated, and like mentioned before, the doctor should notice signs of addiction before you do, and will change the meds if necessary.

I am 40 yrs 6 months, and have been taking Adderall for about 8 months and take it from someone who knows first hand the difference between the A-er, and A-ir, and the rest of the addictive substances is like night and day. Being that he is only 14, make sure you monitor his use and behavior in and around the house and with friends. Report any "BAD" behavior to his doctor. I have been on methadone, "heroine without the high" for back problems and this med, adderall, has gotten me clean of all but one per night, soon to be none. I hope your situation gets better or at least not any worse.

Are you actually implying that there is a large chance your kid will become a criminal meth addict because of taking adderall?

I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 6. My mother chose not to medicate due to the same reasons as mentioned above. I made it through high school with a B average by not taking the medication. After running a stoplight (not knowing it was red) with my mom, during my sophomore year of college, she said it was time to have me tested.

The psychiatrist said that I have one of the worst cases of ADHD she had ever seen. She said that I likely have a high IQ, which is why I was able to succeed in school (if you call a B succeeding). After only six months of being prescribed to adderall my GPA went from a 3.1 to a 3.8. My major switched from psychology/natural resources to pre med. I am now finishing up med school.

I had to retake basic Algebra and English classes to be prepared for grad school. Material I would have learned if prescribed to adderall at an earlier age. I had the talent to become a great football player, however I could not learn the plays. I had to spend $60,000 on a grad degree just to make up for the lack of qualifications I had in undergrad in order to get into med school. Due to ADHD, I learned nothing in school and just transitioned through life.

After being prescribed, I have clarity, focus, and motivation. There are side effects. However, I believe that they are significantly outweighed by the benefits.

Make sure your kid has been properly diagnosed and give him the medication he needs to become "normal". Otherwise, you are only hurting him by thinking he will become a criminal meth addict.

My 12 year old daughter was prescribed Aderall XR 5mg - 15 mg. She was on Concerta but was switched. We were supposed to take the 5mg - 15mg on a trial basis to see which dose would work. Taking 3 5mg capsules have worked for her so far but when we renewed the prescripting they gave me one 15mg capsule. I was wondering if it would affect her differently than taking 3 5mg?? She has had severe anxiety and trichotillomania for the past 3 years, I just didn't want to add anything extra to add to her hair pulling or anxiety.
