Xanax Vs. Buspar (Page 8)

Updated

Yes-what is the major difference between these 2 meds? I have taken xanax for several years. I'm thinking abt. changing to Buspar. Can you switch meds like these without tapering off the xanax. Does Buspar help w/ Panic attacks?

Bush has kept me calm as can be. I get anxiety bad if I don't take them, I can tell. I have taken xanex for 9 years only as needed and they put me to sleep.I guess every ones chemicals are different. I did have berry bad experience with my daughter getting addicted to zanex.and it was like a H addiction. Absolutely horrible. Good. Luck!!!!

From your spelling I'd say you've done some "extensive research." ;)

I have been weaning myself off xanax due to the fact thata a lot of psychs will not perscribe it any more. I went from 1 - 3/4 1 mg xanax daily as needed. in my high pressure corporate job, i almost alwayys to the 3 at least. This was per day. Now i had transitioned from valium when younger, to serax then xanax. i personally know the xanax worked for me and helped get me through almost 30 years of high stress. I was getting, and still could get, .5mg xanax. I was down to 2 - 32 5mg perday from the 3 - 4 1mg perday. ery happy about that. Psych would not perscribe xanax, a collective medical decision to combat abuse. So i tried Hydroxizine which made me a sleepy anxious guy. Having just started Buspar tonight, I can "feel" the affect on my anxiety. It is working - I can feel it and I don't feel fatigued like Hydroxizine. Gonna see how it works for the next 3 days and may switch to it for good.

I have been taking buspar for about 6 weeks after tapering off of xanax, which I took twice a day for a little over 2 years. InitiallyI was extremely afraid of getting off the xanax. Now that I have been off of it totally for about 5 weeks, I feel like a new person! I didnt realize what the xanax was doing to me, how bad it controlled my life. I took my bottle out of my purse 2 days ago because I never want to take it again. Buspar gave me my life back. Give it a chance. I have no anxiety or moodiness and irritability any longer!

I agree with some of the post about Doctor's reticence about prescribing Xanax. I take buspirone only at night, because it makes me too dizzy. Frankly, I've stopped several courses because it's effects are negligible. I was fortunate to have a doctor prescribe .5 of Xanax 20 pills a month. This doctor is an angel. He says with this amount I can't get addicted.
What I don't understand is that the DEA and FDA are coming down hard on prescribing Xanax. What is preferable... Drinking hard alcohol everyday to control panic attacks, so that we can get cirrhosis later? When I use to get severe panic attacks I would end up in the hospital, even having an angiogram to rule out a heart attack. Remember, before the advent of Xanax people before the 80's used alcohol and cigarette s to deal with panic attacks.
Incidentally, my 20 pills last two to three months. I only take half (.25) at a time and when needed. I should be taking more, so I just suffer through some days.
I'm not a tea party kind of guy, nor libertarian , but I wish the government would leave patient care up tp doctors and their patient and mind their own business. Make your voices heard.

I totally disagree with u. Buspar has saved me from anxiety. I've taken plenty of xanax and it is one of the worst drugs out there. Trust me. I've done the research.

Asgrub, your contribution is your own personal experience and surely welcome. I do not believe anyone who contributes THEIR own experience is wrong. Nor is the use of xanax completely wrong. I have weaned myself from 3-4mg/day when I was working and under stress, down to .75mg per day. I will continue to lower use until I take no more. I use Buspar to help me. I am a recovering alcoholic, sober for over 10 years. I had a very successful corporate career. Without the use of xanax, it would have been incredibly difficult if not impossible to do. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you criticize. That way you are a mile away and have their shoes - Peace.

Veronica,
I'm just beginning my experience with anxiety & after reading your post I sure hope
you are doing okay now. It's years since you wrote about the need for Xanax & the
difficulty having a "script" written (2011). I felt so bad for you. Hope you are well.
I'm just beginning my "search" & trying to defeat my unexplained anxiety.

I agree with you that people need to be careful with xanax. The withdrawls from it are the worst and can still effect you up to two years after. My situation was similar to yours. My doctor put me on it when i was 16 and i didnt decide to get off of it until i was 26. I went crazy it was awful. But the truth is i had severe panic attacks my whole adult life knew nothing about it and thats what my dr gave me. The years went on my tolerance built but as i took more i got more messed up but they stopped helping with the panic attacks. It ruined my relationships as well. I didnt even see my brother for years he hated seeing me on it so bad. By the end i was getting 75 2 mg for 14 day supply. Theres no reason anyone needs that much. Im glad im off them and i only take something when i have attacks now which isnt often anymore!

Kk1990.. All chemicals have an addiction potential. Benzos are the worst for sure. In 10 years new wonder drugs will be issued and the drugs today will be branded as being addictive. You only have to look at the medication through the ages. From Milltown to Prozac to every kind of anti psychotic and anti depressant. We all know the marketing of madness. The money wheel. In Australia Xanax has been discontinued because it isn't financially viable. Benzo addiction in this country has been declared as an acute epidemic. Annual over 7m scripts are written for Benzos alone. The population over this country is 21m. One third of the population takes Benzos and it's growing. Good luck everyone.

If this can help even one person, I'd be happy. Please do NOT take Xanax! I was in rehab in April getting detoxed off the med. I was taking .25 for a very long time as needed. As my life changed and I got married, started a career, my anxiety increased as did my dosage and prescription of Xanax. My doctors (family & psychiatrist) put me on 2 mg three times daily, that was it. My body got hooked. I was becoming immune to my 6mg a day, so went up anywhere from 4mg to 12mg a day, trying my best to cut down myself...but could not. It's been 55 days off Xanax and the withdrawals and detox were hell. Literal hell. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to go through the agony. In the first month and a half I wanted to just die bc the withdrawals were so intense. My brain is messed up. I have high anxiety, agoraphobia, a social phobia, and pains in my entire body, shortness of breath, bloated limbs and the list goes on. I'm not able to work only stay at home where I feel safe. It's the worst hell I could ever imagine. If I would have known, I never would have taken the poison...or never gotten off of it. Everyday is a battle to stay off of it or get back on to feel somewhat normal again. Please please, this is no way to live. Any benzo will do this to you. Ive been on Buspar now (which does not work nor compare to the relaxation of Xanax). Stay away from benzos if you want any life at all. I'm going to get better (I hope) from what my docs say, but being like this is a terrible life. I loved Xanax, it was my coping mech! Now I just suffer from what the poison did to me. I did not taper, I was cold cut and put on anti seizure meds. I hear taper is good, but I didn't get that experience. I couldn't walk normally, talk or think normally for a month! Don't do this to yourself. I'm an educated woman with a masters degree, but I would fail miserably in my line of work now. Xanax is poison. Just don't take it! Thanks for reading! Good luck to us all.
