Xanax Vs. Buspar (Page 5)

Updated

Yes-what is the major difference between these 2 meds? I have taken xanax for several years. I'm thinking abt. changing to Buspar. Can you switch meds like these without tapering off the xanax. Does Buspar help w/ Panic attacks?

My wife had the same outlook about taking benzo's and pain meds. She died of an overdose last year, after becoming hopelessly addicted them. Yes, she had a history of alcohol and substance abuse. Her Dr didn't care. Pharmacological treatment should be a last resort, tied together with recovery/coping skills therapy and of course, a good support network. nami.org

I am sorry to read about your wife. I work in with dual diagnosis and taking narcotic prescription drugs is far to common. I am familiar with NAMI and totally agree with you.

Hello, I have monophobia and panic attacks. I have been prescribed xanax for the past 11 yrs. I don't know how to deal with it anymore. I don't know where to begin looking for help.

I retired from the military with a bad case of PTSD of the kind related to classical conditioned stimulus response. Basically when I hear a phone ringing or a banging noise (including simple knocking on my door), I suffer extreme panic symptoms because my mind connects those simple neutral noises with subsequent exploding IEDs. Buspar worked for me by stopping the chemical reaction which converts sensed stimuli into anxiety in my neurological brain. But I had to start with very low dosage, 5mg daily at bedtime (so I fell asleep before getting dizzy) built up to in my case only 15mg daily but for many months before I could say it was preventing panic attacks when the phone rang or someone knocked on my door. After 2 years I tried to wean myself off Buspar but found that although I was not physically nor psychologically hooked on it, I could not quit without going back to anxiety-prone living. So, I have stayed on buspar for 6 years now; it still works for me but I sometimes wonder about being stuck with it for the rest of my life...still, better than xanax or such, which has the same effect as buspar but much more immediately and has been proven addictive.

Buspar is Not addictive like Xanax! It is taken daily and it does help with anxiety. I have also taken it when an anxiety attack comes on and it does help it go away!

II'm in the same situation with the menopause anxiety. However, I also have bipolar disorder. I have taken several medications regularly for over 20 years, including xanax. I get really sick of taking medication but I know I must take it to stay stable. I've started to have panic attacks again so I was taking more xanax than prescribed just to keep from going insane. I saw my shrink today and he changed my medication to Klonopin and added Buspar. I am so scared to try a new medication because of past experiences. I have had bad reactions to trazodone, as well as others, which make me feel foggy and increases my anxiety. Any comments on the Buspar and Klonopin would be appreciated.

My elderly father has been taking Xanax which is a God send - the only thing that stops horrible panic attacks but medicare has decided they wont pay for them anymore.
Is ther anything non prescription that comes close?

I was just prescribed Buspar and I find it horrible. It makes me nauseous, more anxious, more depressed and irritable.

I keep reading that Klonopin is much better for you than Xanax. They are both benzos and are highly addictive. I took Klonopin for nearly 5 years every day, mostly just 1mg a day and they nearly ruined my life!

Please be extremely careful with any benzo. I whole heatedly agree that any issue with GAD should be addressed by therapy as well as medicine.

I suffer from anxiety and depression and have been taking buspar and citalopram from a couple years. They are used together to balance me out, buspar for anxiety and citalopram for depression, they bring me to a more normal level. The thing with these medicationsb is it takes up to a month to let it fully build up in your system to get the most out of it. Every person reacts to medication differently, so what works for one may not work for the next, but before you write it off completely you have.to let it build up and find the right dosage, and your dosage.needs may change over time. If you are having disturbing side effects your dosage.may be to high. When i started the citalopram it made me unable to properly function, so my dr told me to cut the tablet in half and i had no further issues. Just because you dont have the immediate effects you want doesnt mean it wont work. Buspar is designed to prevent you from havibg so many panic attacks once built up in your system. And if you start having more stress you may need to up your dose. I tried to quit smoking and had to up my dose because nicotine affects your brain in a verysmilar way to buspaar with a much faster and shorter effect. There are many influnces you have to take into account when starting a medication.

You can get something at the.vitamin shoppe called L-Theanine. Ive used it for attacks and helps me tons. Its pretty cheap too, some refer to it as natures xanax.

Hi Veronica, If your present Dr. refuses to give you a script for Xanax have you thought about changing Dr's. Also, vets write out this script for anxious dogs. Don't accept whats being dished out to you get out there and get what you need and what.
