Xanax Vs. Buspar (Page 3)

Updated

Yes-what is the major difference between these 2 meds? I have taken xanax for several years. I'm thinking abt. changing to Buspar. Can you switch meds like these without tapering off the xanax. Does Buspar help w/ Panic attacks?

I agree have your hormone levels checked. It's amazing how well you can feel when they are balanced!

I take it twice a day and it seems to have helped me (I've just started taking it) I don't know what all these other people are talking about but medicines do work differently with people. Most of them sound like they really do just want to get high. LOL

It is common for you to feel dizzy/ lightheaded the first few times taking it until your body adjusts. Your psych should have warned you of that before you left. My doctor did. I've been taking it for 3 days now and I feel fine with it. You should definitely let them know maybe you need a lower dosage or the drug just isn't for you.

Really like this post but wanted to add my weird experience with Buspar. I have been taking it for 3 months with 90mg of Cymbalta. I started out with 20 mg a day and it started working within 2 weeks. However, I needed to increase the dose several times because it stopped working. I ramped up to 60 mg a day (20 3x a day). It was working really well and I was feeling like a new person. Sleeping well and being very productive at my job until last week. I started having severe numbness in my hands and shoulders. It was really scaring because I couldn't move my hands. I immediately went off the Buspar because numbness and tingling is a side effect of that. I found a scary post on the web that said a man had to have some of his fingers and toes amputated as a result of taking Buspar. So now I am trying to figure out what to do. I might try a much lower dose and see if I can still benefit from it.

I am in a simular predicerment because of the negative stigma behind the perscription of Xanax. I am nervous about discussing persricptio with my Psyciatrist. I am perscriped buspar now and I take so as needed. I have been persribed to Xanax as well as Klonopin in the past. Each drug has their own benefits as well as their own faults. But for the uses that I need, namly my anxiety as well as sleep aid . Are there any speific protocols to aprouch one's Doctor about such a taboo matter?

I have recently been put on Buspar and, I swear, my panic attacks are getting worse! I am fine when busy during the day, but at night, the minute I try to close my eyes, the waves of panic start washing over me and I have to get up and do something to make it stop. But as soon as I try sleeping again - BAM! Right back where I started from. I had panic attacks in 1998 but have had no problems since. Now they are back. I don't know how much longer I can deal with this.

Anne, I had the same problem. I STRONGLY encourage you to have your hormones tested. As for me, I had to almost force my Dr to test them bc she kept telling me it was not my hormones, but she did it. I was right, it was definitely my hormones. My progesterone level was .06, almost NONE, and my testosterone was low as well. Progesterone is a chemical that our bodies produce that acts a lot like serotonin, which is what keeps our body relaxed and from going into panic mode. Without progesterone, your body will not be able to relax, which is why you cannot sleep and which is why you have more panic attacks at night. If i could tell every woman this I would. I suffered with major panic attacks for months and knew it wasn't something i just needed to take a pill for. For me, it just so happened that the same day i received my results that I had low progesterone was the same day i found out that i was pregnant, and within 2 weeks my progesterone level went from .06 to 33. I cannot begin to tell you how different i felt. It is amazing...i sleep better now than i ever have. So please, have your hormones checked ASAP so the Dr can put you on hormone supplements. You will be so happy you did! Also, be sure they are testing you for the correct hormones. I had to ask my Dr twice to test my Progesterone and Testosterone bc she had told the lab to test for other things...i just don't understand Doctor's. They just want to put you on drugs and be done with it. She had already written me a script for zoloft which i refused to take bc i knew that i may have gotten pregnant. I had even told her that, and she still insisted that i take that and that i had a chemical imbalance in my brain...a chemical imbalance that started when i was 32??? i didn't think so!! Good luck to you!

KAHKE - I DOUBT THAT IS MY PROBLEM. I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE STATED THAT I WENT THROUGH "THE CHANGE" MORE THAN 15 YEARS AGO. I AM NOT A KID LIKE YOU! LOL

Anne, age does not matter when it comes to hormones! Hormones can be unbalanced no matter what age you are. And also, I'm 33 years old, I'm not a kid either. I think this happened in my life bc my body is starting to change and bc I will be entering menopause soon. My grandmother started at 35. If you want to get rid of your panic attacks you really should have your hormones tested. I can't begin to tell you the different it made in the way I feel. But, if you choose not to, and have to deal with those horrible attacks, I do feel for you! Life is not the same when you feel that way.

holyhormones is a great site to read about hormone imbalance. Read the comments too. You will see that you are not alone.

Not for me! For me, it says the attacks can actually get worse for the first month since it is a cumulative medication. but it also says not to take it for more than 1 month! Those two things counteract each other. But everywhere I checked, it said the same thing. Even the Drs. office is stumped as was the pharmacist who is looking into it and will call me back. Idxoat had 5 attacks last night alone and got a total of less than 2 hours of sleep.

Depending on what state you are in, I'm in Michigan, here YOU have a say in your mental health plan. If you're seeing a psych doctor & you feel being on a s certain medicine will help you tell them what you want and legally they have to prescribe it. Find out the laws in your state regarding mental health

buspar is not for severe anxiety it is only for general anxiety and PMDD and yes you can take xanax and buspar at the same time some people are prescribed them together depending on their condition so i imagine switching between the two would not be a problem (if the doctor does it of course)

Lee, you should call a rehab for the person because, and as a recovered addict, it sounds like he/she has a big problem. Detoxing from Benzos is extreme and should be done in a detox center. I hope the best for your friend & that this was helpful to you
