Xanax Vs. Buspar (Page 10)

Updated

Yes-what is the major difference between these 2 meds? I have taken xanax for several years. I'm thinking abt. changing to Buspar. Can you switch meds like these without tapering off the xanax. Does Buspar help w/ Panic attacks?

Bus par is horrible hated it....brain zaps, didn't really help anxiety.....was given atarax didn't help much either took like 4 and still nothing.....sorry I know Xanax is a barbiturate but it does indeed help and 9 years been on it and since having anxiety and panic since a child I feel like a fully functional person and my anger anxiety is under control....highly recommend....being 42 now....I have tried everything on the market and Xanax for me....and my kids agree much more in control and a happier person...

i have found that many ocd medications help with generlized anxiety, i am personaly on luvox time rease 150 mg and it has been very efective with control of my panic attacks, i went from having them non stop 10-14 hours out of every day to only having 2-3 breif episoeds a month, many ocd medication will have the same effect as, ocd is a form of panic disorder. you may still need to have a benzo on hand, they are evective prn but realy should not be taken daily, as the end result of daily use is incressed frequence and duration panic attacks, as your body becomes dependent on them fairly quickly.

If you've been taking Xanax for an extended period of time ,DO NOT switch to Buspar. If you feel you MUST ,you must taper off the xanax slowly before changing or you will experience HORRIBLE withdrawal symptoms. I was on xanax 2mg twice a day along with Prozac 20mg for G.a.d. ( anxiety ) for 3 1/2 yrs when my Dr retired and I changed. The "new" Dr changed my whole regimen taking me off the xanax and Prozac and putting me on paxil and Buspar. After only the first 2 days I started feeling very strange and by the fourth day I was in full blown withdrawal. I thought maybe it was my body adjusting to the new medicine so I had my mom to call the doctor to report these symptoms ( I was too sick to call myself) I was sweating, vomiting, shaking, sleeping maybe 1 hr a night, crying spells, could not eat anything nor did I want too.My mother told the drs nurse that she had a strong feeling I was having withdrawals from being just yanked off my xanax like that and the nurse said quote "that's a very strong possibility but we don't prescribe xanax for anxiety" and made an appt to see me 4 days later!! (That really chapped my ass) That night I was sleeping at my moms house on the couch at around 5:30 am my mom said she heard a very loud pitched sound that she described as a loud cat fight and when she came in I was having a full blown seizure. my mom called 911 and I was taken to the hospital where my mom told them what had happened with the medication suddenly being switched (by this time it had been 6 days) the docs did a full neuro and cardio workup and immediately diagnosed it as a " benzodiazipine withdrawal seizure" He was also FURIOUS with the Dr. who just took me off of it saying this is what happens when you do. He gave me an inj. of something (I think Ativan) another med that's a benzodiazipine and wrote me an Rx for 21 1mg xanax tablets...the seizure left me confused, like I could answer things like my name and bday but not the presidents name.. left me EXTREMELY exhausted, and scared. I went to the Dr who gave me the BUSPAR crap and brought all my paperwork with me explaining the misery it caused me.He actually had the nerve to look me in the eye and say "sorry but I don't prescribe benzodiazipines... I can give you something to prevent the seizures" WTF? I LEFT and never went back..I went to my PCP and even he said that should not have been done like that.you NEVER go cold turkey off ANY benzo. He wrote me a months script of my original xanax dose and lexapro 20mg w/ 5 refills on each... I still see him to this day for ALL my medical needs.

I would talk to your Doctor about this. it may just be that the mg needs increased, I know it is addictive but you have to do what you have to. If not your life will always be up and down. Also may want to ask the Doctor to change it to 1 mg of kolonopin which is a benzo however 1 mg of kpin is equal to .5 of xanax. Also xanax is a drug that is instant release. you can get extended release xanax but I was on 2 mg xanax and since its instant. it hits you right away causing the full drug to hit you at once. This makes you tired and the other problems. I asked my doc to change it because kpins when you take 1mg it will last 5 to 8 hours. I take it 3 times a day and buspar 30mg once at night to help sleep. I know how people feel with doctors and the way the treat people and what my new primary who i love was like why did the nero doc want you off the kpins (I take them for extreme anxiety and stress to point my hands shake bad and, also for my epilepsy. When I told my primary, he said its not a siezure med so i showed him look i have been on 5 meds at first 4 years ago. Then my primary doc said this one is cheap and when it came out was for seizures. The first sentence in the papers from pharm say: kolonopin is used to treat seizure disorders. Then the next par. says This med is goes on about the med then says half way down also used for anxiety and stress. He still said no and put me on one the other meds i had been on and just never took it. My Primary doc and therapist both said no and my Doc was calling the nero doc to tell him no this one pill takes away from taking multiple pills and has worked for over 4 years. When I told him the doc name he was like o great he is an a**hole sorry but he thinks he thinks he know everything and doesnt know s***. Its just money in his pocket. But you pay him right? I said yes, he said well if you go to get your car work done do you walk in and just say ok pay and walk out no you dont. If it wasnt for our patients we would not have a job. He needs to listen to you to say fine there are was better doctors, i can go too, get up see what he says. That actually care about patients no matter the med they need. Also you will be reporting him to the medical board.

I fear this is going to happen to me! I am only 40 yrs old. But, I am experiencing Peri-Menopausal issues with anxiety..no. Some severe anxiety at times. I have an almost 2 year old child and I want to be all the mother I can be. I am scared that I will be considered a "drug addict" if I request the Xanex, which is what I think will work best when I have the anxiety attacks. Which is only periodically.. I will see what happens. Just wanted to express my understanding.

My experience for the past 8 yrs. is that I "could" use (2) .25 Xanax daily, but I really try hard not to. In 11/07 I was dx w/ 3c cancer. So lucky to be here today, but my utmost panic attacks hit for several yrs. upon waking. Wellbutrin stopped that. I don't get the classic panic attacks, but I've noticed as of recently that my anxiety does contribute to my inability to get things done & leave the house! So if I was more aware of my own anxiety, then I know I'd be more functional.

By '13 I was dx w/ sjrogens & fibro.

In '08? I was taken off Xanax & given Buspar. I was taking Gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy (from chemo) & I looking back, it felt like a year+ of my life was wasted on Buspar. I wanted to believe it worked. All I remember is 20 min after taking it, I would feel dizzy for a few sec. I'd go shopping & feel kinda stuck in my own head. Hoping I wouldn't run into anyone I knew. I am an introvert though, so everyone is different!

I remember a post from a guy who said he was taking Buspar & while eating at a high rise restaurant, he looked out the window & thought how cool it would be to fall from that height. There is this superhero mentality that might come from Buspar. And OH!!!! ...my libido was like I was 17 again! Lol. I am 42 & while that would be nice again, I am not ready to try Buspar again. Because I am loving my 10mg of lexapro....& still on trial w/ lyrica.

Good luck!

Buspar used to be a great drug years ago when I was given it for anxiety. However, I do feel that Xanax is definitely more habit forming. But seems like Xanax is the pill of Choice!!

Yeah, one cannot even compare the 2 & Dr's know it. They give out Buspar as safer med. & if it works, it's the placebo affect. I have some sitting around. I might try it again to refresh my memory. Then again, kind of scared to. I was victim to Viibryd & I know that there's a Buspar chem similarity mixed in Viibryd. I used to have sleep paralysis & night terrors & auditory hallucinations on Viibryd.

I feel the same way.I'm 39 years old,a mother of a 19 yr old and 6 yr old...I'm in the medical field and work night shift and go to school full-time.My anxiety is at a all time high with my lack of sleep, studying, being a good wife and mother. My doctor left his practice with no explanation after 5 years. My new doctor is thorough, but when I ask for Xanax mind you 0.25 mg he looks at me like I'm a junkie. It works for me.Yesterday after my visit he prescribed Buspar 5mg to be taken once a week for the first week and twice a week the second and the xanax is ONLY for my anxiety when I'm at my worse.I feel ashamed to ask for my refill of xanax because of how they look at you...0.25 mg just assist me with my everyday living....I don't even take it everyday.I hope Buspar works......I've suffered from anxiety since I was 13 years old.Back then they put me on activan.
Time will only tell.....

Pam, from July 31,"15. Sounds like Xanx may not be what you need. You might have ADHD. I was on Ritalin for a long time, but found Adderall most helpfull. Perhaps you should explore this possibility with your doc. I didn't start on the ADHD meds until age Mid 40's.

I wish you, the OP, would see this, but it is a little belated. FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR! Some are just plain anti-med, especially if a particular medication is known to be addictive. This sends THEM into a panic. And yet the doctors who will take your condition seriously, and if you are a candidate for this medication, prescribe it--these are not as rare as you might think. Maybe a gynecologist would if not your primary. I know pharma-psychiatrists are horribly expensive, but you might find one who will take you forwarding whatever medical documentation is needed from your PCO or other so that part would be covered, go once or twice, get the script and then have him/her call your PCP as a consult and recommend this or just keep re-filling.
