Withdrawal From Vyvanse Experience (Page 6)

Updated

I have been on Vyvanse for 4 weeks and I am now tapering off. I was going to quit cold turkey , but I wke up this morning and felt like I'd been hit by a truck. It's been a few hours and I still feel like I have a mild case of the flu. Anyway, I started 4 weeks ago and the first 3 days I never felt better in my life. I 'd never been so productive, focused, and organized! By day 7 , I was back to my normal under- acheiving, scrammbled , self. Then my Dr. raised my dose from 30 mg to 50. Well this threw me into severe anxiety. I have been chewing my nails till they bleed. I can't seem to stop. I have a feeling of being completely overwhelmed, my house is trashed and it's driving me nuts, but I have no energy or drive to get up and clean it.....Can anyone else out there relate to this?

I want to validate the people who feel flu like symptoms, sweats and eye pain. I was on 40mg daily and it was helpful but I was taken off suddenly because of concerns about cardiac hx in my family. I have been sick for several days and feel extremely sick. I did not find anything about this is the literature. My advise is to consider a slow progression off this drug. I am going to try a homeopathic tx and will not use any of these drugs again.

Beth,
I am so sorry to hear about your struggles. There are alternatives to these medications but if you can find a doctor that is knowledgeable and open to discussion it is helpful. I know it must be very hard for you being a teen. I encourage you to learn about other things you can do in addition to your treatment such as meditation, artwork etc.., but most of all believe you can get better. Take the energy you have with your anger and try to place it somewhere else that would help you such as reasonable exercise, tai chi etc... Don't give up...you are a valuable person and can get better.

I've been on and off of vyvanse for the past 2 years. I was an anxious person to begin with, and vyvanse amplified that. It gives you drive to work, but at the expense of your sanity. I still feel much more tightly wound than I ever was before I started. I haven't taken it in over 3 months. I regret ever trying it.

Are you replying to someone's post?..you seem so aggressive.. Why are u so Angry? It Makes me sad that you have no empaythy for others that you don't feel have been through all you endured. I assume most of us here commented to share stories and compare our feelings after we stop taking it...if you have no encouraging words, why would u bother to comment

I have been on Vyvanse for 2 months now. My dose is at 50 mg and it will probably be going to 60 mg on my next visit. I am now able to to so many things that I was unable to do before. I decide today to not take my dose so my body would have a chance to detox a little. BUT I am experiencing a lot of nausea. Does anyone have a suggestion for me that would help? I also want your opinion on taking weekends off.. Thanks to anyone who might help

This is very helpful. I am 24 and work full time and go to college. I have been taking vyvanse ever since its been on the market. It is amazing and sometimes a blessing but it also is a crutch. I take it during the work week for energy and focus due to ADD and it helps but I find myself needing breaks from it, it makes my heart race and makes me nervous, anxious, and different than i normally am. I worry about being on meds forever and I dont want to take ANYTHING while pregnant so I am wondering if I should stop taking within the next few months or wait til i am finished with school? I am worried I wont be able to function without it. But I think after the withdraws are over, I may have a chance to not rely on it like I always have. Please give me some advice. I know I will be tired without it. I can sleep all weekend because I never take it on weekends. Its not healthy.

Meg,

Quitting cold turkey is possible. I did it. I'm sorry to say though, it WILL cost you. It is a matter of value. I took vyvanse for about 4 months. 60 or more mg a day, taking 3 or 4 days off per month.

I stopped taking vyvanse the day my semester ended. I also decided to take the following week off from work. Luckily since I was living with my parents, I could afford to do this. That week I did nothing but rest. I smoked massive amounts of marijuana to help ease the pain that the withdrawal causes to the body and mind.

I worked 30 to 35 hours a week for 3 months after that rather than usual 40. I am lucky enough to work for a company that lets you be flexible like that. It was totally worth it. Honestly, I feel like I have been able to retain some of the positive habits and attitudes I gained from taking vyvanse (staying positive, determined). I lost the terrible headaches, body aches, dry mouth, social anxiety, over-sweating and impulsive rage. I gained back my humorous personality and creativity, which were both minimal while on vyvanse.

After being on Vyvanse 50Mg/day for over a year, I quit cold turkey 6 days ago. The only side effect I noticed was an amazing craving to sleep. I took 3 naps of 30+ minutes per day and today is the first I haven't felt the need to do so. I had one afternoon/evening of intense agitation where I was throwing stuff around my garage and had zero patience for anyone/anything but that went away the very next morning and may not be related. I stopped taking Vyvanse because I felt that the drug was amplifying some very troublesome OCD habits that I couldn't control (picking) for more than 9 months and for the past 3 days I feel I have some control over it now. I miss the amazing energy and clarity I had while on it and have yet to find anything that works as well (Focalin, Adderall, Adderall XR).

The exhaustion was my only symptom that I would say was definitely attributed to withdrawl.

Quoted "People, get real. Honestly. I have been taking Vyvanse now for 6 months and it has helped me transform my life into one worth living. If that is not your experience with the drug, then STOP TAKING IT!!! This medicine is not an opiate, therefore you will not go through the level of withdrawal some here have reported. I have been through cold-turkey Oxycontin withdrawal and that is no joke. The sickness and anxiety made it impossible for me to function in my daily life. Even after 4 months off opiates I was still a mess. I have run out of Vyvanse a few times and the only withdrawal symptoms are sleepiness, and lots of it. No chills, no anxiety, no flu symptoms or tics as others here claim. They are being overly dramatic. If you want to stop taking Vyvanse, don't fear you will go through all that. If you don't believe me, try not taking them for a few days while you still have some left. You will just be tired, not sick. Fear not."

This is how i feel exactly. this drug has changed my life around, i still feel fantastic and i get s*** done and have even put in for my supervisor position at work and I'm only 22. it has changed my work ethic to that of superman. granted i have always been a good worker and gotten my job done but now i can organize the entire production floor and help others while doing my own job still. I'm so happy. for the first time in my life i don't forget the simplest of things that i honest to god tried and could not remember. Seriously if it doesn't do this for you, talk to you doctor.

i have no side affects. been taking 40mg for about 6 months. It is my personal opinion and best wisdom and advice that if anyone is over like 60mg, your doctor isn't a very good doctor as dosage over that amount isn't going to help.

I feel sorry for the people who have all the bad stories i've read. Being scatter brained is frustrating but i'd rather be a little behind and forgetful than losing your mind and feeling disconnected. Love to all

I'm 20 years old currently, and just before going entering University, I went to see a psychologist and was diagnosed with ADD, I had tried taking Vyvanse 30mg before from a friend of mine, (who's been on it for over 10 years) and was already aware of how it helped productivity so much with school work. I started on 30mg for about 12 months. While I initially began taking it only for exams and very busy days, I was slowly but surely shifting into taking 1 every day. I became a zombie in school, I would have people come to me and ask me if I was stoned. There was a clear euphoria with the dosage and I blame myself for not realizing that the medication went from helping with school the first 2 months, to just wanting to feel good. I even stupidly went and got an increase in dosage to 40mg, thinking the effect (basically just feeling high) was wearing off and not lasting long enough. I was foolish not to realize that its not supposed to make you feel high, but only give you the "missing" Dopamine in brains with ADD I became a zombie in school, I would have people come to me and ask me if I was stoned. After taking 40mg for a few days I began feeling depressed at night, no doubt the insomnia and lack of appetite did not help while taking Vyvanse. I was scared, after all this time of wasting a year on this "speed" I finally acknowledged that the way Vyvanse was affecting me wasn't right, I basically had a lack of discipline, and I knew in the back of my mind while my original intention was to just use to help with school, it became a psychological escape from my life's stresses. first three days off it, I slept over 24 hours, extremely fatigued. The interesting but unfortunate thing is this, I went the next week feeling good again, back to my old hyperactive self, but was still productive at work and school. It was AFTER these 7-8 days that I began to feel severely depressed, suicidal thoughts, just a sadness that I couldn't shake. I barely got any sleep during that period of time. It was horrible and scary still today to think about. After about month of this horrific experience I went and took a 40mg for relief, which made me have a ridiculous euphoric sensation, followed by crazy mood swings for two days, my body wasn't ready for such a drastic change it seems. I'm currently tapering off taking 20mg for a month, then next month 10mg then I plan to stop completely.

I am not here to tell people don't take medication, or that it may not be appropriate for some people. I want to make clear though, that even when you take something that is prescribed, you may not find yourself where you want to months later, additionally, it is possible and PROBABLE to develop a physical dependence on whatever you are using do to your brain not producing normal levels of Dopamine due a foreign source being entered.

Even for me , simply TAPERING off hasn't been the easiest, but much more manageable than the month of severe depression. Use medication if its the LAST RESORT, focus on discipline, motivation, and efficiency, don't be like me and think that just because a pill is an easy way to do everything, that its the best way. You can train your mind in focusing and attention just like you can go to the gym and build muscles. Don't be hostage to a dependency on medication that you don't really need. I learned the hard way. For those who are able to go Cold Turkey, cheers to you, remember eat as healthy as possible drink plenty of water, and try and establish a regular sleep pattern so that your body can have a fixed internal clock after a long time of reduced and/or irregular sleep patterns.

I was on vyvanse for 6 month, which I know is not that long, but I decided to goff of it during the summer so i could lower my tolerence. It has been 3 weeks and I feel about 80 percent. The first week made me feel lethargic. I felt emotionally unstable but slightly more motivated the second week and now I feel emotionally stable, but just not quite as competent and focused. Basically how I felt before Taking vyvanse. It takes a little more effort to get going but you will still be able to function with enough willpowed. Just remember, you will never feel the same as you would on meds, when off meds. Good luck and you can do it!

I've been taking 50mg vyvanse a day for a little over a year now. While it has helped me immensely - like going your whole life not knowing you needed glasses, then suddenly receiving a pair - it is not completely perfect either. It only lasts about 6-8 hours maximum for me, so I try to time my daily dose to kick in when I need it most. This is a problem when I need it later in the day. I find that if I go any longer than say 26 hours between doses, I get this weird, fuzzy, bad feeling of being physically ill from the chest up - sort of flu-like, but different, unique to this vyvanse withdrawal - and my sinuses get runny. It is such a physically uncomfortable feeling that it ruins the first half of any day in which I need to take the vyvanse later, and makes taking medication vacations almost intolerable. The longest I have lasted without taking it was 3 days, and that fuzzy flu feeling hadn't gone away by day 3.
