I will be going back to work and will be testing for illegal drug use. I am on Neurontin due to a medical problem. Will I get a FALSE POSITIVE result on a test for illegal drugs?

At a Methadone clinic they 'should' be able to further test the urine for further analysis to see if it's just trace amounts (depending on the amount of neurotin you were taking). I came up positive for opiates after 14 years clean and we discovered it was from poppy seed bagels (like 3 of them I ate 3 days before). I never knew that whole poppy seed thing was true. Anyway, they believed me and they tested it and it came up so low they let me keep my take home meds. I lucked out!

Saw on the news awhile back that doctors (surgeons) don't have to take drug screens. When asked why, representative said because they are not 100% accurate, and why should a surgeon , who went to college for 6yrs, lose his job over a test that's not accurate. But who calls you if you fail,...doctors. and what makes his job more important to him than my job is to me?

Jen,

First of all your theory that you know when your husband is lying is flawed because NO ONE KNOWS WHAT AN ADDICT WILL SAY OR DO WHEN CONFRONTED ON ISSUES OF DRUG USE AND HISTORY. Now if you believe in his innocence that's completely a different story worth making the case for. It's very simple, you have the right at your own cost to have the test rerun for accuracy preferably by a lab that utilizes GC/MS testing protocol as they are inclusive to nanogram certainty, there is no disputing the results of sophisticated testing method like that. Why someone would ever use gaba is beyond me when less toxic greater euphoria producing substances are as easy to buy as candy these days. So I tend to believe your story, as for the *****s who administer these first line testing procedures it's sometimes a challenge for them to print your name or date accurately on the specimen. Best of luck to you.

My husband has been clean now for 8 months. He was in a rehab facility and was drug tested last week, he failed for Gabapentin. He didn't take it never has taken it and somehow it showed up is there anything that can cause this to happen? We are requesting blood work and hair follicle test to prove his innocence but I know when he's lying and he definitely didn't take gabapentin so please help I can't figure out why this would show up has this happened to anyone else?

I am also in recovery and recently tested positive for amphetamines which I haven't done in years and I also take gabapentin in a daily basis. I believe it is causing the test to fail but no one believes it. I'm sorry this happened to you too and I hope all went well for you

I take 600mg of gabapentin three times a day and I tested positive for methadone on three occasions. Being a recovering addict no one believes me that I haven't touched methadone. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

When you type in neurontin or gabapentin it says it can cause a false positive in labs for protein or something. idk if it means for protein or the proteins in it can cause false positive for a drug but I've heard it showing up for methadone with someone before who was on it while they were incarcerated, so they had access to nothing else and u need to take a urine before going to work. Was release and she kept failing for methadone and getting sent to the hole so she had to get off of it. A month after she stopped she stopped coming up for methadone. I guess it all depends how ur body processes things. I've had a fp before from tramadol causing a suboxone fp. And I had a false positive for valium before but idk what caused that. It's like my body always creates false positives and mimics other enzymes in my system, causing false positives which is scary since I'm on probation and already went to jail for a week for the suboxone fp. Until lab tests came back that it was false and that really sucked.

Ativan wouldn't show up on a drug screen...where did you get that detailed of a drug screen? It would show up as Benzodiazepine like xannax or other benzos..just like oxycodone or hydrocodone..it don't tell the Dr. That you took a Percocet or an oxycotin it just reads oxycodone, or if you took a vicodin or Norco it just reads hydrocodone, that's the basic drug screens..so I'm wondering where did you get the specific reading of a Ativan on a basic drug screen it should just read on the screen Benzodiazepine.

I lost my pain contract due to Gabapentin showing up alcohol in my system. If it takes the rest of my life, I will prove my innocence! I did NOT drink a drop of alcohol. I think maybe it is that I have bad sinus' and I had taken some Benedryl and that could have caused the false positive with Gabapentin. That's all I can think of.

I've been going to the same Pain Mgt. DR. for almost 2 years. All my tests came back good, all was well. 3 weeks ago, he started me on GABAPENTIN. I had the Urine test and today it had came back positive for alcohol! The test they took today will turn out to be positive also because I am still on the GABAPENTIN again. My dr says he can't do anything about it. I'm going to do something about it, I haven't touched a drop of alcohol in 15 years. I found out that most all tests are done by a test called LCMS. If a false positive shows up, they are supposed to do another test to see if it is a False Positive. They did not! Forgot to tell you what I take: Lisinopril, Norco, Ativan. Has anyone ever had Alcohol show up after taking Gabapentin?

I know this post is old, however, I'll answer it anyways, in hopes that it could be if use to others. Especially if it was only traces, it very well, could be that you are diabetic, or borderline diabetic & your body is converting sugar to alcohol. This is a common occurrence actually.

800mg neurontin 6 times a day? Is this prescribed? Yes it can cause false positives. If it's prescribed just let the lab people, or person know you are taking it. If it's illecit then you have a problem

Steven, I was taking Neurontin for neuropathic pain and I noticed that the higher dosages would cause munchies and other effects like those you get from MJ. At a later point my son was prescribed Neurontin for pain associated to brain surgery and I asked his neurosurgeon (out of Burlington, VT) if he could tell me exactly what the ingredients in the drug were. He went on to check a drug book he has and could not find the ingredients, however he told me that the one thing it said was that a person would TEST POSITIVE for marihuana while taking Neutontin.

my son and i did. I fought like a dog and he did too but it did not matter because he was in jail and treated like a liar for a whole week. He was made to suffer for something he did not do. I went to our lawyer but geuss what, that all takes time. They refused to give him a blood test. You have no control if you are in there. Too bad for you. Thank God it came back negative when it was sent out but that was a week later for the results. The wardens response: Well you have to understand that was not a normal around here, most inmate aren't honest.

I would tell him not to take it then. It's not worth his freedom. I've read and seen wherethis drug will show false positives. I would not risk it if I was him, especially it being my freedom. Best of luck to you two! Let me know how it went.
