What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 17)

Updated

I have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!

I'm recovering from back surgery due to a car accident and have been on 4 mg Dilaudid. My doctor is weaning me with Norco. It's not working well for pain but it IS keeping me from getting sick. If you get sick when you don't take the Dilaudid you should definitely ask your doctor. I hope you feel better.

I am presently on 2- Oxycontin 80 mg a day ( use to be three) and 4- 10mg Loritab (use to be five). Now I am going through major oral surgery plus dealing with Rheumatoid Arthritis. My oral surgeon insists that I use Dilaudid for my oral problems which my pain mgmt. doesn't agree. I have been on the Oxy"s for several years and I need a change. Do you think of I had the long term Dilaudid instead of the Oxy's and Loritab for the break these pain meds would work and would she prescribe it? Sick of feeling bad!!!!

I was an IV H user I started on Vicodin and Percs then worked my way up too insufflating 3 80mg oxy's at a time then in too H. I've taken every opiate there is I'm clean now it was hard you need to find a psychiatrist who is an addiction specialist or a pain specialist can help as well only they can prescribe suboxone/subutex this is the easiest way too kick opiates you have to go through withdrawal approx 24 hrs before you can start "subs". These can be addictive also but you don't get the high as from pills ect...Once on subs you can then taper down slowly and ALOT more comfortably than trying too kick cold turkey. Many rehabs use subs and can detox/ taper you while there if you don't have the discipline too taper at home. It's not painless but pretty close using subs. You might be an addict and not realize it I'm not saying you are just something too think about I don't mean too offend you as this might not be the case. Find a Dr who can prescribe subs and tell him everything your usage and prescriptions this is important for them and you. Wish you the best hang in there brother I've Been down that road so I understand how hard it is.

I have been reading a lot of these posts. As a chronic pain sufferer myself, I will say this, everyone is different. What works for one, may not work for another. Careful cause doctors receive kick backs for prescriptions (narcotics). Don't let them over medicate you. I understand what everyone of you are going through. Just remember this, pain medication minimizes the pain. Half is a psychological game. Stay as active as you can along with a proper diet. You'll be alright. Take care.

I read your story and trust me I feel for you because I'm in the same situation, I've been on dilauded for 8 years now and no matter what I tell my doctor they won't help.. I have 10 crushed disks in my lower back that surgery can't fix they put a spinal stimulator inside me and trust me that doesn't work either.. I have tried to wing myself of the dilauded my self and yes its like coming off H the vomiting the cramping the point of you just want to die.. I too have gone to the hospital because I run out early to..its as if no one understands the extremely pain and if they did they wouldn't be standing they would be crying their hearts out and doing every thing they could to tolerate it and even if at that...the doctors yes have me on 32mg of exgalo which is dilauaded extended release with 8 mg dilauded for break through pain and it doesn't work I have over dosed several times because of the pain .. I'm stuck like you and continually searching for pain meds that will work.. If you find a remedy please let me know and if I find one I will pass it to you.. I'm sorry for your pain I completely understand and honestly not most people can truly say that.. I've had 9 surgeries on my back to be told sorry we can't fix you.. I would like to keep in contact with you here is my email {edited for privacy} kinda of a buddy system.. Thanks for sharing I don't feel alone now..

first, you should learn how to spell. second, you might check yourself. you haven't done "every" drug there is. try taking 24mg dilaudid daily for 6 months, then go cold turkey. YOU WILL BE SICK, and you would have to be God not to withdraw.

I have been in pain management for 23 years for degenerative disc disease cervical and lumbar. I did best with the internal pain pump with Dilaudid and tried a number of different drugs before finding Dillaudid worked best. I also had oral opiate for breakthrough. We tried a relatively new drug, at the time, Prialt. Within 2 weeks I acquired sudden onset amnesia. I spent 8 weeks trying to ensure that Prialt was the cause and determined it was indeed Prialt. The manufacturer stated that once withdrawn and given time to metabolize the residual the condition would revert. For me it has been a permanent condition. I won't try to educate you on this type of amnesia other than to relate my first occupancy. My wife and I were in the car on a Sunday and I asked her if she had heard anything from her mother. She replied that we buried her five days earlier. It wasn't like " oh yeah, now I remember" the memories were simply gone and never returned. My wife informed me that I had been intimately involved with her mother while hospitalized, then to hospice at home, then at her bedside when she died. Within the next two weeks I had two auto accidents with no cognizants until discovered by a family member. I quit driving and we switched back to Dillaudid and spent 8 weeks working with my pain specialist to determine what we could with an uncooperative manufacturer. I continued to have issues ranging from minor to life threatening. I sold my business and went on SS Disability at age 58. Over the course of those 23 years I felt like I had the best relief from the pump and Dillaudid along with a drug for breakthrough. Shortly, the pump site became infected from a dirty needle and had to have the pump removed. That was 6 years ago and I have finally found a suitable substitute. I wear a Fentanyl patch and have Dillaudid 4 mg per 6 hrs. In addition, bed rest gives me even more relief. This sounds contrary to normal advice for back pain but I have had 22 surgeries related to my spine conditions. Current the neurosurgeon says i need a total lumbar fusion but he doesn't think I could survive. I have never experienced euphoria with any of my pain drugs but I am dependent on them. I hope the post, albeit too long and rambling will be helpful to someone.

Oxycontin 60 mg a day = 32mg Dilaudid a day. Dilaudid was marketed for people who didn't like the drowsy side-effects of morphine in pain management. I found the only time Dilaudid worked properly was if taken an hour or so after oxycontin. What happened to all the older more effective meds where you didn't need top-ups, careful timing, red tape coating all over everything making a Dr's job more & more difficult to balance between results V government policies V their job?? This brings me to Palfium (Dextramoramide) Omnapon (Paraveretum) & Pethidene which with a whole list of good efficient painkillers have disappeared of the market to be replaced with the modern controversial pain relievers debated & fought over the pro's & con's off!!

Oxybutynin is good for sweating. It's a urinary tract med that relaxes the smooth muscle that your bladder uses to tell you you have to urinate even though your bladder isn't full. You will never piss yourself, trust me. It just acts the same way on your sweat glands. Most methadone doctors prescribe this to those who sweat from the damn methadone. It works nicely.

First of all, dilaudid is helpful in "tablet" form. Secondly, if you believe you cannot get pain relief by taking 15 Norcos (10/325), there is a problem. I am in the health care field and have given patients plenty of narcotic pain relievers and have NEVER seen anyone that needed more than 6 mg dilaudid (oral). The simplistic difference between IV and oral is onset of action. There is a possibility that other cerebral mechanisms are the result of your inability to achieve pain relief with these potent pain relievers at their prescribed dosages.

Yes, you can taper off, so if you know you're going to run out in a few days before your next prescription, it's best to take less and less, it will ease the withdrawals considerably

Please try to keep in mind that, while you've never had to give a patient more than 6 mg of oral Dilaudid to achieve pain relief, people's responses to various pain medications is highly individualized. Perhaps you have simply never encountered a patient with a pain level so high it requires more than this. I've had severe fibromyalgia and other medical "contributors" to my pain for 21 years and am prescribed 2 tablets of Dilaudid (4 mg per tablet or 8 mg per dose) for BREAKTHROUGH pain. I've tried taking only 6 mg this situation and it's never sufficient. In fact, WITH MY DOCTOR'S PERMISSION, I occasionally must take 12 mg (3 tablets) to achieve sufficient pain relief to be reasonably comfortable and functional. I always try 8 mg initially; I take the additional 4 mg only if I'm still struggling and having a difficult time functioning & thinking after 60-90 minutes. And remember, this is for BREAKTHROUGH pain. I take 60 mg of Oxycontin every 6 hours (or 120 mg of Oxycontin every 12 hours) as my primary pain reliever. And NO, in spite of this level of opioid pain medication, I truly have never been "high" or even slightly fuzzy/buzzed nor does my doctor have to continually prescribe higher doses for me; I just finally feel comfortable and functional. In fact, once I found my present physician and we figured out what dose was appropriate (i.e., controlled my pain, let me function and allowed me to sleep), my dose hasn't changed in many, many years. And, contrary to the statement of an ignorant physician and professor of medicine from the Univ. of Wisconsin that "those fibromyalgia patients just love their narcotics," I merely accept the fact that these medications are what enable me to live a fairly normal life. Again, they don't give me a thrill, a high or a buzz and I'd love to do other things with the money I spend on prescriptions. I AM grateful to have a courageous doctor who puts the well-being of me as his patient ahead of foolish and ignorant ideas from other docs, the DEA, insurance companies and arrogant professors from the University of Wisconsin (or anyone else!) God bless him!:-)

My apologies--in my previous post on 12/22/14, I stated that I take 2 tablets of 4 mg Dilaudid, 4x per day for breakthrough pain. The actual strength of each Dilaudid tablet I take is 8mg. So...that's two tablets of 8 mg. Dilaudid 4x per day for breakthrough pain. My apologies for the error. Obviously, the point of my reply still holds (even more actually!)
