What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 16)

Updated

I have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!

April, I'm sorry to hear that. You had legit pain, then got mentally addicted to chasing the high. I'm sure physical addiction followed. People forget there's 2 types. Cannabis/pot is mentally addicting but has no physical addiction or physical withdrawal (hence why people fight to legalize it). Alcohol , along with every other drug, are both. Anyway, I stray off topic.

A dr should have recognized, your addiction and slowly tapered you off it. It's actually very irresponsible (and illegal in some states) for a Dr to prescribe narcotics (or benzopines), over time, then cut you off. People end up having seizures, in a coma, or die from withdrawal (has to be massive addiction though). Usually it's 7-14 days of hell for opiates, but benzos must be tapered - even at my low dose

Anyway .... After you got cut off, you probably had 7-14 days of hell while you physically and mentally went through withdrawal....

.. But mental addiction can take YEARS to conquer. As long as someone was really in pain. Took meds as directed... Then I have sympathy.

When people see multiple DR's misuse Rx, I have no sympathy.

I'm on them for life unless a few things get invented or perfected

1) vertebrae / disc replacement. Current option is spinal fusion. NO WAY
The new way is they go in lapriscopically (like knee surgery) , pull out the bad disk, and put in a tough, silicon replacement. This is in human trail stages so there's hope

2) knee. I need a full knee replacement - a new carbon / titanium knee. Insurance refuses as it's cheaper to medicate me :/. I'm currently suing them to pay for it

3) hand surgery. I fell and broke it in many places (sprained as well). It aches 24/7. I'm a massage therapist, and it's agonizing pain to work. Insurance refuses to pay for surgery as they feel "it's not indicated". Basically cheaper to keep me medicated. I'm fighting this too

Someone asked how I got a dilauded Rx.. This is how/why. It dilauded is rare. It's usually vicoprofen or Oxycodone with opana ER.

To Finn: YOU are the kind of person that causes greater suffering for people in terrible pain. People at this site live in agony, trying to get appropriate pain medications just to help them have some sort of life that isn't constant suffering. We are constantly fighting not only the pain but also the perception of doctors, insurance companies, pharmacists, the DEA and society in general that anyone on these medications must be a drug addict and abuser. And YOU are worried about whether you got the best deal on medications you're abusing for "fun"? Even if you actually needed pain medication, doing something like "trading" your pain meds for someone else's is the type of behavior that causes problems for legitimate pain patients. However, if you really needed medication for pain, then getting the best "price" in an illegal drug deal wouldn't be your primary concern as stated in your post. Your post is an insult.

If you want to get off if dilaudid then get a pill cutter and cut them in half and taper off slowlly. Then try going as long as you can between doses.....keep at it and eventually it wil work...good luck

don't be so judgmental! try breaking your spine in three places and your femur and pelvis while you are at it. these pains may get to a point of not as bad as before but after months add up and then years go by, ask yourself would you suck it up, well obviously not because you have done every drug out there "not in pain" so i guess you only do that because you can't deal with life or maybe life is your pain so you medicate

To PEEVED - You're so right! It may be possible to just "suck up" pain when it's very short-term but it surely sounds like your pain is definitely long-term! I became sick 21 years ago and have been in pain since then--not "I've got a hangnail" pain or "I've had a headache for an hour" pain or even "it hurts in one spot" pain but pain that is literally everywhere, all the time, nauseating, agonizing, going crazy pain! It's pain that, at one point, kept me from sleeping so completely that I was sleeping maybe 2-4 hours out of 24--not necessarily continuous sleep but often 20 minute catnaps that added up to 2-4 hours. Continuous pain, combined with severe sleep deprivation will, quite literally, make you crazy and there's no way to just suck THAT up and still stay alive. Add a series of doctors who absolutely don't "get it" and you have a waking nightmare. Please know that many of us understand and have a lot of sympathy for your struggle with pain and know how terrible and how exhausting it can be. I hear the frustration in your words. I do hope you're able to find a doc (if you don't already have one) that does "get it" and can offer you some relief, some reprieve from your suffering.

Well Cynthia you sure have alot to say to everyone it seems. I thought you were on pain meds just so you could do basic things like have talks with your husband, spend time with your grandchildren etc. Yet you sure spend alot of time on the computer adding your unwanted comment in this case. I chose to ask a short simple question because I didn't think it neccessary or anyone's business as to how many Dr's. I've seen, specialists, therapy etc. Plus I don't need to put every drug, dosage, did it work, didn't it work and everything else that goes along with chronic pain. As a DRUG ADDICT yourself you should know how quickly opiates build up in our systems. Sometimes we have to take a couple of extra pills when the pain is worse than usual. And that can lead to running short of our meds! My friend and I are both well into middle age and are not looking to feel high!! We want the same things that you do! We also have problems with other people abusing drugs which causes the Dr's. to be very hesitant about upping dosages. We help each other out once in awhile and all I wanted to know was if we were being fair with paying back the ones we borrow! We do NOT exchange money! Maybe because I used the word "deal" got you on your high horse but get off it!! One more thing, is this not a forum for people who want information and help with medications? So what the hell are you b****ing about someone's grammar and spelling? Maybe they can't spell well, don't have a lot of education or maybe they just have trouble typing! Pardon me if mine isn't up to your standards. Now go play with your grandkids! FINN

OH DEAR, FINN! Guess I hit a nerve which wasn't nice. In your earlier statement, you didn't indicate WHY you and your friend were taking these medications. It truly sounded like you were just buying drugs and then trading back and forth rather than taking them for a good reason. Also, there's a difference between addiction and dependence; check it out because I think it would reassure you that neither I nor you nor your friend are addicts. One becomes physically DEPENDENT on opioids taken to counteract pain but that's not addiction. An addict just wants the high, has a psychological need for them rather than a medical reason. And, I beg of you, PLEASE familiarize yourself with the legal consequences should the facts of what you're doing (trading medications with a friend) every become known to "the law" or to your doctors or someone who might "tattle" on you! I do understand that sometimes the desperation created by pain can lead one to do things they wouldn't normally do and I would hate to see you or your friend lose the pain meds you need because of the trading. Hopefully this is information you keep between just the two of you so this won't happen. I'm glad to hear that we actually are both on the same page in terms of abusers who ultimately make life more difficult for us. And while I would love to talk more with my husband and play with my grandkids, as you suggest, my husband works out of town and is gone nearly 12 hours a day, coming home exhausted, and my two sets of grandkids live in other states. So my time with all of them is limited--I can't just go talk with my husband and play with my grandkids any time I'd like to. Also, I don't know if you've experienced this with whatever your particular health issue is but my experience has been that when your physical functioning is limited and you can't walk well and you have constant fatigue, all of which has been going on for 20 years, people kind of forget you, leaving you with a very limited social life which has been a very different experience for me--I used to be very active with a full social life! So it's helpful to be able to come to websites and chat with others who are also struggling. As for the spelling and grammar thing, it doesn't have to be perfect, certainly, but sometimes it's so bad that I can't figure out what they're trying to say--which is a shame because they probably have something good to share. Or, I confess, sometimes I'm just having a really bad, exhausting, painful day and I'm inappropriately cranky--for which I apologize! Hopefully, I'm not the only one this happens too! :-( Anyway, I hope I was able to clarify some things because I think, in the end, we're both on the same side! So, Finn, all the best to you and your friend! :-)

Getting yourself off of opiates can be a tricky thing. First thing you must consider is that no matter what opiate you take it always breaks down to morphine in the system. The easiest way to get yourself off of it is to slowly taper the dose down GRADUALLY. For example. Someone taking one 80mg OxyContin should taper down to three 20mg(60mg) OxyContins for one to two weeks, then down to a total of 40mg for another two weeks, then down to 20mg for two weeks, then 10mg for two weeks then to one 5mg Percocet for two weeks then to a Demi-Percocet for two weeks then maybe two Tylenol 1's for two weeks then down to one Tylenol 1 for two weeks. This gradual lowering of the dose will help your body adjust to the lower dosages and you should not experience ANY withdrawal symptoms. In the end, you will feel fine, except for the initial reason for taking them in the first place. I hope this helps because I know how hard it is to just STOP taking the meds.

I suggest you discuss Suboxone with your doctor. It stops dilauded from attaching to pain receptor sites with no side effects. You will be in pain, but it sounds like you're suffering hyperalgesia. FYI. Dilauded is available in an ER tablet.

I'm using Dilaudid (4mg) 3 times a day along with a long-term time-release pain med, but the Dilaudid doesn't seem to help my pain at all, so I tried 2 tabs intravenously. It worked great! But I know it's not kosher, I'd hate for my doctor to find out because I used to use other drugs back in the 1970's. The needle leaves track marks.

Oh Lisa. Can I relate to you barely walking, getting out of bed. I'm 1 year post op from spinal fusion and I'm worse now than 8-12 mos ago. I'm on 30 mg OxyContin 3x and 30 oxycodone 4x...nobody understands, and really nobody cares! Except my wife. She's my saving grace through all this. My Best to you for a recovery and aide again.

If you are slamming the meds, you need to suck it up and take it orally.. I take 4mg 3 times a day and once in a while I will taper down and stop taking them for week or so. I reduce by starting with 2 and a half pills. 2 days later I reduce by another half. Three days later I reduce by another half..I think you can get the schedule that's happening here. I find daludid the easiest to kick. I'm a vet and have been on pain meds for 25 years. I've taken everything available over the years. I wish you luck and health and hope this helps.

1) u don't get THAT sick tapering unless you're tapering too fast
2) meds work FINE orally.
3) if u go through your RX in less than a month , you are abusing it. Plain And simple
4) you build a tolerance up to any drug after a few months and need a higher dose, but that's no reason to go through it faster or you end up addicted to a dose higher than the next step they RX. Go to a rehab clinic unless your Dr is licensed for suboxone. Suboxone has ac37 hr half life which is why it's used to taper someone off.

Lastly if you are taking your RX in any other way orally , you. Are. Abusing. It. As you are getting 2-3Xs the drug , the Dr expects. Orally you absord 30% of most pain pills. 10% for some. It's designed that way in purpose. An 8mg dilaudid = 2.4mg IV inj. (which is a Lot). Same for IM, but IM spreads it out over time.

A full 8mg dilaudid will cause an oppoiod intolerant person to OD. 8mg dilaudid = about 30-40mg oxycodone.

You got YOURSELF in this bind by taking your RX non orally. Go to rehab , get your dr to put u on suboxone and slowly taper yourself off

Tapering has failed with u bc u take your dilaudid non orally. So your body expects the full 8mg vs 2.4 when orally taken. If I took orally, what you do no. Orally, I'd have to consume 3 8mg pills at once. If would OD as I'm used to 2 4mg dilaudid a day orally. Abd yep, it starting to not work. Soon I'll be upped to 8. When that's ineffective , I'll be weaned off oppoids. Reset my tolerance etc. Then start all over again with tramadol.

Me=broken L4/5 disc. Torn cartilage in both knees. Have had to many surgeries on knees. Not enough left to remove and ins won't pay for replacement cartilage.

What will SUCK is being weaned off pain meds fir a time. Suboxone will kill pain but as I'm tapered down, I'll be bedridden for 6 months.

Get on suboxone. And take your meds orally and stop abusing them
