What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 10)

Updated

I have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!

To answer your question you would need 12 mg of dilaudid contin. Yes a doctor or a methadone clinic can help you off these drugs.

Hope this helps!

I really agree. People who live healthy normal every day lives have no clue how it is to live every single day of your life in excruciating pain with no real cure. All u can rely on is pain meds n they dont work worth a damn sometimes

Dilaudid is stronger than oxycodone but I only take dilaudid intravenously when im hospitalized. It stops the pain immediately. At home I was on 100 mcg fentanyl patches and they work great for pain but they were too strong for me due to my size. I went down to 75 mcg patches n I still would be pain free until I would have severe attacks where I had to be hospitalized. I'm just tired of all the pain meds n I discussed it with my doctor and I recommended him to lower my dosage because when I tried to stop taking it on my own I wasn't able to get out of bed. Withdrawals was worst than the symptoms I was experiencing from my illness. Now I have gone down to 25 mcg and I still felt some withdrawal symptoms but they aren't as bad. Next month im going down to 12.5 mcg and I will be starting the new year off free of pain meds if it's the Lord's will. I have my days where im in pain but I try to fight it. When I can't my dr gives me dilaudid shots but I have never been dependent on dilaidid as long as I have been on it for over 4 years now for weeks at a time. When they stop giving it to me and send me home I have no remaining craving for it but to me its the best pain med ever.

How long we're you on the meds and what were you on? I am terminal, but not in the immediate future and I am on Dilaudid and now they had to add Roxinol (all liquid b/c it's in my colon which is lost all gone from disease & surgery). The Dilaudid pills aren't that helpful but w/the Roxinol it's been better but I don't feel addicted. I can go days (sometimes) w/o taking, how long would withdrawal take to set in? It's wierd but as long as I've been sick nd it's been close to 10 years I have a few days of the sweats (which I hate) then cold and clammy but that's it. Could I be wired differently? I've been told to plug for more effectiveness and I looked it up, how old that work better for me since my meds are already liquid? I'm past worrying about appropriate use, no offense but I'm not going to last all that long so the more relief I can get w/o being admitted or being on hospice would be helpful, I am underinsured. Thanks for any advice.

It takes 3 mg of dalaudid (hydromorphine) to equal 20 mg of oxycotin, so if you broke a 40 mg of oxycotin in half, you were actually taking less pain medication, breaking or chewing a time-released pill in half is dangerous. Talk with your doctor, be honest, some people believe they should be totally 100% pain free, pain with medication, unless for terminal illness at end-stage, don't expect to be 100% pain free.

I was on Fentanyl for over a year. I went off it because the patch only worked for one day but could not change the patch but every three days. I did have some pain relief but not like I had hoped.

Was in your shoes with oc. Took 160 Mgs a day. As soon as I woke up, thru the day, before bed, in the middle of the night. Got off it myself. I smoked weed as much as I could for 2-3 weeks. It worked. Then getting off weed was easy. Good luck. Might not be the best advice but I'm the only person I know who kicked it with out any other scripts besides the smoke.

To begin with, these folks who talk about having these SUPER BAD ADDICTIONS who had not much problem getting off of Narcotics by themselves and ACT like they had not much of a problem.....I don't even begin to believe them. Everyone I have ever known who tells me, "Dude...I finally kicked 2 weeks ago and I feel great"....they have no idea who they are bulls***ting but they sure aren't bulls***ting me. 2 weeks later is when you can't harldy walk or talk. So please...don't come at us with all of these smiley face story's about how you did it when all along you have some Hydrocodone or Oxy crushed up under your tongue. I know human nature and the PHYSICS of the human body, and you Sir are no different than me.

Mr. Cohen,
First I must tell you I am terminal, not tomorrow, actually I'm in remission so that was very unexpected and a wonderful surprise but I take IR Dilaudid, now up to 48 mg per day but I have stopped for over 1 week for personal reasons (I also take IR morphine-can't tolerate long-acting due to GI issues and other than some mild night sweats and feeling over-heated occasionally I do not seem to have this terrible withdrawal you all write about. Is it that I'm not off long- enough to feel the full brunt of the w/d or am I some sort of genetic freak? I really want to know. I take x RX'd 99% of the time but have dosed nore due to SEVERE pain. Please give me your take and if I will experience them, when and for how long? I don't seem to do much of anything in the norm, could I just be wired different than other people? Please say what you mean just don't say it mean! Thank you =).

Don't have much time to write, will try tomorrow but you need a different doctor. Neuropathy is HORIBLE, have from recurrent shingles and I too have Crohn's disease. It can take a while but there should be some combo that helps. Narcotics do not work for neuropathy but there are other meds that with doctor's supervision, hang in there and I will post what helped me - also, narcotics did help at times so I'll write in next day or 2. Hope you are ok for now, sending you hugs!!

yes. try this. I was on subs for a while. Your w/d will be next to none. my back pain was so diabling I could not get out of bed. After 2 surgeries I still have problems but Getting off subs using this method will work. Positive thinking. Some ppl on forums really hype things up about subs. Erase it from your memory and know your own strength. You'll do just fine my friend.

Sorry Dude, I didn't mean for it to come out mean. I'm thinking you've been on these opiates for a pretty long time. I personally in 31 years have not once run across a soul who took a strong opiate derivative on a regular basis for at least 6 month's and was able to STOP on a dime. All of the opiates, such as Hydrocodone [Lor-tab, Vicodan], Dilaudid, Morphine, Methadone, percocet, Oxycontin.....all of these affect the same part of the brain. The effects of opiates are many, including a rush immediately after injection, extreme relaxation, decreased sensation of pain, and decreased sexual drive. Sexual drive is decreased as the opiate affects the release of hormones and transmitters that regulate sexual behavior. Opiates also effect other areas of the body including the pupils of the eyes. That is, they cause extreme constricting. Other effects include nausea and vomiting along with slowed breathing. The brain is stimulated and thus causes nausea and vomiting usually occurs to detoxify the system. Moreover, opiates also increase muscle tension in the gastrointestinal tract.
The way that opiates work on the brain is that they bind to specific receptors , that is, the neurotransmitters in the brain that control movement, moods, and physiology, which includes digestion, body temperature and breathing. They cause the neurotransmitters to fire at a high rate as they would in times of extreme stress. The opiate receptor and other brain receptors are proteins located on the surfaces of nerve cells, or neurons. The brain works through neurons communicating with each other by releasing signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals attach to the receptors on nearby neurons much like a hand fits in a glove. When we have an "outside source" to do the work the opiate system in the brain naturally does, the brain stops producing because it doesn't have to anymore. Therefore, When one suddenly stops...the "natural brain opiate production" is not there.......and it is a nightmare and long lasting. If you are 'different'...you are mighty unusual and lucky. Good luck to you. Art

Andre...post #191....COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER. Those of you who have never been there, and if you just happen to "go there".......are going to be in for a LIFE THREATENING BAD SURPRISE. It's like nothing you can imagine. I've been on Methadone for 31 years. I have no hope of ever getting off. At times I have had some BAD THOUGHTS if you know what I mean. If you are not there, and you think you are in pain now......keep taking the opiates and see what REAL PAIN IS. Am I correct, Andre? Art Cohen

Wow you really had me in tears here pretty much and really inspired by your words and your story, someone who actually knows what they are saying! I think you shut everyone else right up, we'll those who were on here to knock down those addicted to pain mess anyway. I don't want to say the obvious and typical thing here that I am sorry for what you have gone through but I really am so I will, I am deeply sorry and feel great empathy for your situation and I pray that you and your wonderful family can get through this, together as you should be. God bless you for opening up and speaking the truth. I just wanted you to know that someone does care. Thank-you ~8()8~

Well I was on a prescription of 3 x 40mg oxycontin 3 x 50mg toradol ,4 x 5/325 Percocet for breakthrough pain and with the use of the Canadian medical marijuana program I am free of all pill form meds , that is for 4 herniated discs 3 calcified disks , severe osteoporosis being the cause so the damage continues to get worse. But with the use of medical cannabis and will power to avoid the opiates I am now only using cannabis am free of all opiates and can function at about 70% of my capacity before my spine got bad. So in my opinion go natural
