the doctor who visits this forum says there is no false positives for meth in a blood test unless you have taken it, I haven't researched it but it sounds accurate to me you can check out his post about it below it's post number 155

Hi I'm desperate! I haven't used method and just had a positive hair follicle?? I have only taken nyquil, sudafed, and afrin to clear my nose as I've been sick from the weather. Can this be the cause? ? Plz respond !

If they only screened your hair test, then yes those cold medicines could very well cause a false positive test. The only way that it can be proven it is Meth is for them to have the hair confirmed by GC/MS or better yet: LC/MS/MS. This would be proof positive one way or the other. Good luck.

It does because I just got a shot of vivatol to get off opiates and the night before I was very ill so I took NyQuil and Musinex, but the next day got so sick I passed out and a ambulance can got me,they took a toxins scene and said I have methamphetamine in my system and I've never seen the stuff how do I prove them wrong, they made a big deal out of it and sent me to a detox hospital

the best I can tell you is go get a hair analysis and if you have never did meth in you're life then everything should come back fine however the opiates will show up because you have taken them. idk you're full situation but if all you need to prove is you don't have meth in you're system then go get the hair test it don't cost all that much maybe 150$ tops some places are cheaper but if you have in fact taken meth then there, is no need of wasting you're money on a hair test because it will show up an the hair test goes back 90 days you would be better off just coming clean and admitting your guilt. good luck

My spouse takes a lot of medications. He has come up with a false positive for meth three times. (He sees multiple drs within the va world) the dr wants him to see the neurologist who prescribed selegine. He believes that med is the culprate. It's an Mao inhibitor. Which I was unaware of... even though mao inhibitor are something the g.p. would not perscribe do to the dangers. This med has actually helped immensely. Now because of the false positive for meth, and his opinion. We are now REQUIRED to seen him off in order to retake the drug test. I guarantee 100% this person is not on meth. He's a disabled vet. No access to car, and I handle all of the money. He doesn't leave the home. It's absolutely absurd to contemplate with all his ailments to entertain the idea of meth. One opinion from one Dr will now have this veteran back to uncontrollable shaking. How is this right? Selegine 500mg.

I thank your husband for his service, and sorry to hear about your situation and I'm not familiar with the medication your husband was prescribed it is possible that it did cause a false positive for methamphetamine that I'm not sure of but there is other medications out there that will cause a false positive and the over the counter medication for heartburn zantac aka ranitidine i know for a fact will cause a false positive for methamphetamine and you can buy that anywhere and I know you said he doesn't leave the house but heartburn is quite common and something like zantac can get easily overlooked as being a possible suspect so just make sure you haven't been giving him zantac for heartburn and if you have then that would explain why he got a positive result for methamphetamine, but like I said there is others out there that will cause a false positive. I just know for a fact zantac is one of them. good luck and I hope you get this matter straightened out.

Jerry, and everyone....Zantac, and many other meds can cause a false positive screen. But upon confirmation, it would prove out to not be Meth or Amphetamine.
That is why I continue to tell EVERYONE: Urine cups, oral swabs, hair...are all screened and are subject to error. That is why you MUST insist on LC/MS or GC/MS confirmation. It costs more money, but that is the ONLY way to stop false positives.

yes John I understand how that works all drug test are subject to error without further testing but I think LC/MS GC/MS is pretty standard on the hair test because I remember when my test came back it said all of that on the page next to "negative" so the form of testing depends on how far you need to go back usually when somebody prefers a hair test it's because the drug has done had plenty of time to leave the urine so innocence has got to be proven using another method so more than likely you will see more false positives show up in urine than you will hair because urine test is used more often an hair test is more advanced because it's got to go to a lab to be tested. but there might be such a thing those confirmation test doesn't come standard but all I know is both urine test got it wrong and my blood and hair test come back 100% negative and both pages had the confirmations listed next to the result so I'm assuming the LC/MS GC/MS is part of the package

Jerry,
It depends if they do confirmations. If so, yes it is done by either LC/MS/MS or GC/ MS. But the normal process for all urine, blood and hair testing is to do a screen on EIA or something similar, to be able to know what direction to go with the confirmation. Most places do not confirm all negatives, if the screens are negative, unless that person is on a certain medication. Then we have the scenario, of where the entire test is both screened and confirmed by GC/MS and/ or LC/ MS, and at that point it is finished...screened pos or neg. Hope this helps.

I also was going to a pain mngmt doctor. I had tried a spinal cord stimulator but that just made it worse. So he just recently put in a morphine pump. I haven't had pain relief like that in 20 years! Then bam! I get a letter saying he is dropping me from his practice because I tested positive for methamphetamine! I am a retired police officer, and I haven't even seen methamphetamine in 15 years or more! They just dropped me without a conference, or even a follow up test. This has absolutely crushed my world. I was just beginning to taper off of my oral pain meds, and needless to say, they refused to refill it or even to adjust my pump. Now I am scrambling to find another pain dr to take me. But why would another dr take me knowing I was dropped for testing positive? I could not figure out how this happened until I saw on this web site that otc nasal spray could cause a false positive. OMG. I have been using one for several years now. And this was also the first time they used a saliva test instead of urine. I pleaded my case but to no avail. Why on earth would I jeopardize my treatment just when I was finally getting some relief???

I tested positive for meth and my doctor sent me certified letter saying that she will see me one . More time and after that I will be dismissed from that office. I only take what she prescribes to me. Although I've been sick with the flu and sinus infections and head colds that I can't seem to get rid of. I do take ranitidine for my stomach, hydrocodone for pain, klonopin for anxiety and nerves, gabapentin for nerve pain, singular for breathing, ventolin inhaler, feurocets for my headaches. Also she has pre s cribbed me a Zpack antibiotics and ranitidine for my flu like symptoms. The only thing I've taken that was not prescribed is a Vicks inhaler, cold cough and congestion pills, Nyquil caps, and I do take mini thins and 5 he energy shots and stickers. I've never touched meth or anything related to it. The only reason I take mini thins is to help lose weight the attackers before I go work to give me a little energy. Can someone please help me prove this to my doctor!!

trixx I'm pretty sure cough syrups will cause false positives what kind of false positives that each one gives I'm not sure of but I know for a fact ranitidine aka zantac will give a false positive for meth so what you need to do is stop taking ranitidine and find out if the others can give false positives and idk your situation how long its been since you was tested etc but most likely you will need a hair test and make sure the test is GC/MS or LC/MS confirmed and if you haven't actually did meth or whatever they say you did then the test will come back fine it will distinguish the drug that gave you the false positive from the real deal and your test will come back negative hope this helps and good luck.

Trix, Vicks Inhaler may be the culprit, if it contains l-amphetamine...which they used to, same as the Bezedrex inhalers. Ranitidine will do it, Jerry is right on that, plus, God only knows what the combinations of cold preps you are doing, and what mini thins contain....if there is any phenylpropanolamine, or ephedrine, you are looking at another possible FALSE POSITIVEs....also To Stacey, the nasal spray may be the culprit in your case. PLEASE EVERYONE GET A CONFIMATORY TEST DONE BY GC/MS or LC/MS That goes for urine, saliva, hair and sweat.
Also, quite putting so much chemicals into your body...your liver and kidneys will only hold up for so long. Best wishes to everyone!

Stacey see my other two replies. If you have time to get your original sample reanalyzed by confirmatory testing it will exonerate you from the callous paranoid pain docs. Please realize that the DEA and the States Pharmacy Boards are creating this hardship on the real pain patients. Best of luck.

Jerry, the blood only contains the drugs for a short time, they are metabolized pretty quickly into the urine, and with the hair follicle....hair grows approximately 1/2 inch a month. So, the sample taken depends on how long the hair was, was it from the head or another part of the body, because other body hair can keep it a lot longer. Hair may or may not have been confirmed negative, if the screening was negative. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate that someone is reading what I take the time to write.
