I tested positive for methamphetamine. The nurse did the swab in my mouth. I have not taken methamphetamine, but I do take a lot of blood pressure medicine, diltiazem, enalapril, verapamil, and nifedipine. Could any of these make my test show up as positive for methamphetamine?

Hello,
I recently took a hair follicle test and i tested positive for meth. I have never used it in any way i was with a girl who was using within the last month is it possible to get a reading of 6000pg/mg by kissing her or walking in the bathroom after she used or could it be something else?

well jaysin, I tested positive for methamphetamine on a urine test and to make a long story short, after I failed the test I offered to take a blood test right there on the spot but they sent me to a hospital when they should have sent me to a lab. So the next morning I explained then they sent me to a lab they drew blood my blood came back negative then they said it had time to leave my system overnight an said I was guilty an gonna put me in classes. So I just went got a hair test without telling them an the hair test cleared me instantly. I'm not an expert on hair follicle test but its either 1 of a few things, 1) your test wasn't confirmed with what they call GC/ME or something like that. 2) human error in the lab getting your hair mixed up with somebody else's (which doesn't happen often but does happen sometimes) or 3) you actually had methamphetamine in your system. Not saying you're guilty I'm just saying those are the only reasons I can think of to cause you to fail a hair test, but just a tip if you have did methamphetamine an just looking for a way out of your situation the best advice I can give you is to just come clean an admit it because you can keep running but it will eventually run you down and if your girlfriend has a serious drug problem she needs to try an get help soon before its too late. good luck

A lot of these meds test positive on a urine drug screen, because they contain a similiar metabolite for the substance being tested. Just because the confirmation comes back negative doesn't mean it was a false positive, it means they didn't find the parent drug category when they performed the confirmation (you can't report a confirmation as positive if you only find the metabolite). However, some labs are now reporting metabolites detected, or if they have requested the wrong confirmation testing (ie: looking for this medication, or illegal drug, etc). I have taken very high doses of heartburn meds, and never had a positive drug screen.

medtech: you are incorrect. We absolutely can confirm metabolites of certain drugs without the parent drug being present. I don't know where you got your information from bur it is wrong. If we found 6-MAM, we would confirm as HEROIN. whether there was codeine or not. and the same goes for other meds in which the parent is metabolized quickly. I do forensic toxicology daily, so I hope this helps you.

Dana: Short answer:Yes there are. Read my previous posts. BUT remember the Methamphetamine cannot be called UNLESS the blood has been extracted and ran through the LC/MS/MS for proof positive.

Dr. JOHN: Each laboratory has their own policy regarding reporting, and I have worked in labs where they will NOT report metabolites unless parent drug is found. That is the individual laboratories preference, especially since most laboratories are not performing forensic testing.

Dr. John: The majority of drug testing is performed on urine, and urine confirms are just as valid. Blood testing for drugs is rarely performed in the typical medical setting. In the autopsy/cadavar situation, blood is the common testing medium.

There is also the difference between laboratories in their threshold for detection, and reporting ranges.

Medtech105: Please don't take such a rude attitude when attempting to communicate with me. I have over 40 years of medicine behind me, and my doctorate is in LABORATORY MEDICINE. Blood is not usually used because it is a pain and a larger cost to extract the compounds of interest. Urine is, indeed the specimen of choice.
The Federal DOT and other federal and state agencies have set cut off values, despite whatever the laboratory wants to call their cut off levels.
Metabolites of parent drugs get metabolized out of the blood via liver and kidneys.

Your comment about body cavity and autopsy drugs has different cut offs due to the distribution of the drugs throughout the body.

If I offended you in my answer/comment, I apologize as that was not my intention.
I give only true and valid answers on the site, because I am asked these same questions daily by patients, law enforcement, attorneys, and other laboratory personnel.
The bottom line on any drug testing is this: screening via card, or cup, then EIA for further screening from the family of non negatives, then the non negatives from the EIA must be CONFIRMED by GC/MS, or better yet LC/MS/MS. Unless the drug is confirmed the test is only presumptive.

medtech105: In the autopsy cadaver blood is used, but so are stomach contents, urine from the bladder, and liver is digested and extracted for drug analysis. I don't know where you got the impression that I was saying urine is not the specimen of choice. confirmation of urine results are great when analyzed correctly. Remember, urine ran via EIA or other Spectrophotometric analysis is only a SCREEN it is NOT confirmation. If you have any specific questions or comments you would like to have me answer, please feel free to ask, I would be happy to give you a truthful answer.

Would you mind looking at my lab work, I think there's laws in relation to testing and length of time through haven't been followed. I disagree with the findings, Amphetamine 63 ng/ml LC-MS/MS Methamphetamine 300 ng/mL LC-MS/MS both from 001-peripheral blood drawn on 7/17/14 specimens received on 7/25/2014. The lab paper looks unprofessional or fabricated. There's things crossed out, print over print and only one signature and it's not on the findings page. Report issued date was 10/06/14. Last report issued 8/01/2014 and 001- reference comment for methamphetamine was modified on 10/03/2014. I use marijuana daily and they tested for it so why didn't that show up and what would make theses results? The whole thing is shady. It's now 7/23/15 and I finally was able to get these results from DA to show my doctor.

Dr John - you state in your reply to Dana that you can only confirm MAMP with blood, which is misleading to the general public. It just adds fuel to their fire that urine testing is invalid. As for confirming testing, we submit all of our confirms to Medtox (when the physician wants one). You are right a screening test is just that, a screening test. Each screening test has it's own detection limits.

My son takes lisinopril for high blood pressure will it give a false drug test?

Jean, Yes indeed lisinopril can cause a false positive for benzodiazepines and cocaine on some dip stick tests. Always have the test confirmed by LC/MS/MS.

But in saying this, how about if you have methamphetamine and the things you have listed, in your system. Would a secondary lab test find them individually???
