What Medications Are Used When The Pain Pump Is Installed

Updated

What are some of the medications used during the preliminary stage prior to having the pain pump installed? I was told a series of injections are administered with different medications (and mg's) to see what works best for me. This requires a 3-4 day hospital stay. I would then be scheduled to have the pump installed permanently.
Thank you
I'm currently prescribed 100mg MS Contin 4X daily 60mg oxycodone for BT pain.

I'm not quite sure what all of the options are, there are quite a few different ones that can be used.

One of the most common, however, is Dilaudid, which contains Hydromorphone.

Learn more Dilaudid details here.

It's a very potent narcotic opiate and is even used quite frequently in self-analgesia when someone is in the hospital and in pain. I had it in my IV to self-administer when I was suffering from severe gastritis.

Does anyone else know what other options they frequently use?

So it's basically the same medication you take orally only it's delivered through the spinal cord? I heard that it could take as little as 1/100th of the normal mg taken orally to have the same relief? When my doctor told me during the upcoming hospital stay "You'll get a series of injections of different meds and mg's to see what works best" I assumed it was different types of meds. Was also told this was the preliminary stage and will then go back for the permanent placement of the pump. I wondered if fentynl is available for use in the pump?
Thanks for the help!!

DO NOT HAVE A PAIN PUMP INSTALLED. I allowed a doctor put one in me and I only got relief for the first couple of months but had more issues then relief. The pain pump catheter is placed in your spinal cord. You will probably end up with a spinal fluid leak and suffer the worst headaches imaginable for the first week. You have to spend that week laying flat because sitting up makes the headache unbearable. I stopped seeing the doctor who put it in because he didn't care that it didn't help. When I left I asked him to turn it off and he couldn't. It took me over two years to have it removed and I found out that the catheter had moved out of the spinal cord and was barely in the cord and that's why I wasn't getting relief. Those are just some possible problems not including what can happen if you ever end up in an accident. I would recommend staying on oral pain medications or the patch. Best of luck.
