I agree. You cant "choose" to be addicted. The only way is to never take them. E.g. If you dont smoke, then you cant be addicted to cigarettes. I have nerve problems, have done everything they told me, even surgery. I take some everyday and can feel my body go through withdrawals when I don't. They are addictive because they are a narcotic. You have to be able to use control just like any other "addictive" substance. Too bad all those nice people in the AA meetings didnt choose to have problem. I wish I could help stupid

For those with chronic pain, if you need something in an addition to or to slow down on pharmacuticles try medicinal marijuana. It works for many of the issues I am seeing here. As for your child you, should see this as a warning sign and have a serious discussion with him.

I hate the people on here who put others down. Calling them idiots and ignorant. Those same people are either idiots or ignorant in some aspect of their life. We all have our downfalls and the judging makes it no better. Live your life how you see fit and leave everyone else alone... TO EACH THEIR OWN.

Actually, everyone who has said " oh people who abuse them are just idiots..." ARE WRONG! My grandmother & my cousin both started taking hydrocodone because of rheumatoid arthritis & back surgery. My cousin had her rotator cuff messed up severely in a car accident. Everyone starts out taking them for "pain" . & I'm so sick of people saying " oh I'm prescribed 4 a day, & I take them like I'm supposed to so im not addicted" bulls***! If you ever didn't have them for some reason, you would be having withdrawals for sure! It always starts out innocently, but you do develop a dependence on them & you can't help it because your in actual pain. & , most of the time, you don't realize your actually addicted until you already too far into it! A doctor will tell you that addiction is a disease . No one normal WANTS to go through withdrawal & being an addict!

Hello, I just happened to read your post. I am a caregiver for my husband who suffered a catastrophic head injury and is in immense pain from the diffuse axonal injury and axonal shearing This can happen in all types of brain injuries though. Your pain medicine can make you moody because when it wears off it causes rebound pain. Your neck most likely is needing some physical therapy and ice/heat therapy. You sound like a very strong and educated person. You had a blessing in the fact that your mom took good care of you. I am so sorry to hear of the loss. You may have unresolved grief in your heart and that is completely NORMAL sweetie. I am a Christian and have lost two fiancees before I met my husband and then almost him in the industrial accident. Your spiritual health has to put into the picture because God loves us and that is why he sent his son. To save us and reassure us that we will see our loved ones again. But it is still hard to lose people and so I think you should find people that share life with you in a positive way. If your in excruciating pain you should see a specialist who is not a pusher and will help you come up with a plan that will last you a long time. You seem to have personal discipline and that is the key to success. And most importantly, your hormones are important because they control everything. If your thyroid is off kilter you will feel lethargic, have foggy thinking, weight issues etc so it is important to get T3 and T4 levels checked and cortisol levels also. I have fibromyalgia and know what chronic pain is, but our will to live and enjoy life should the urge to just lay down and accept defeat. My doctor gave me some excellent advice-PACE YOURSELF. If you do that and eat good healthy foods and make your health your priority, you will have a happy life. I have learned life is not a sprint but a marathon so to say. There are pharmacies who can check your hormones if your interested and you can look up Dr. Platt in California to learn stuff that will totally amaze you. Hope this helps and God Bless You Always. Oh yeah, and remember that caregivers are needed badly. It affects us all because one thing is for sure as far-We all know that one day we will either be a caregiver or need a caregiver, so it is good to help others when you are well and to accept help from others when you are down and need some help. Never be afraid to ask for help. It is the smart thing to do.The Bible says that extreme pride usually precedes a great fall.

It pains me to hear your story. I won't go into how or even why I understand it, your pain that is to say. But I do, and you need to know that there's nothing wrong with seeking help. Iv'e been clean from Oxycontin for three years now. I went through it alone, but not completely considering the care from my Doctor and support group. I went through the Bupremorphine treatment and it saved my life. I am me again, and succeeding in my Collegic studies, and at work. Don't let all of the chatter detere your mission. The worst part about the whole thing is the fear of the unknown. God bless and stay strong, and above all please remember your not alone.

If you want to become free from addiction from pain pills, there are two drugs that allow you to become independent from using pain pills with out the side effects and you wean yourself off them as prescribed. subutex and suboxone - Houston (Detox Houston) has a great outpatient rehab so you do not need to lose work hours etc.

I agree with they are only additive if you want them to be , but not the transplant part , i have been taking them for several years, 180 per month, i have 3 bullet holes SS rods in my back a new knee and a titanium plate in my neck along with degenerative disc syndrome, I wish i could switch up but im immune to lots of the better PK , anyways if your kid has them and gets caught with them he will go to jail , the kids have found a way to remove the time release agent in them and eithe smoke shoot or snort them for the hi and can easily OD from these methods....so if it was my kid i would beat hi ass....

Wow..u guys are amazing survivors. I had the gastric bypass in 2008. For some reason the surgery site started to ulcerate. For over a year I was on Vicodin which only erased the irritation so I could remain employed. The only response to the Fentanyl patch was skin irritation and burn. Then it was the Morphine 30mg 3x a day with Oxy for breakthrough pain. So a week b4 surgery the nurse calls and says stop taking everything. Called the office back to verify..everything. I didn't know it then that I was having withdrawal from the morphine...the week leading to surgery I didn't sleep even 4hrs that week..sweating..runny nose..coughing..fever...a cold right?!? So my Fam force fed me Nyquil. Wasn't eating already and I'd throw up whatever I tried to take down. Surgery day, my vitals were so off that they paged my surgeon and the anesthesiologists. My surgeon was more disgusted than angry..he said that he couldn't hold off on the surgery, he couldn't do that to me. I was given IV meds as well as a patch for my blood pressure which was crazy high. The anesthesiologist sat with me and talked to me the whole time he was giving me stuff to get me stable enough for surgery. I was given the banana bag..morphine...dilaudid and finally methadone. It was the methadone that stabilized me..3hrs behind my surgery time and he never left my side. After the surgery they kept me pain free. Every 4hrs shot time and they had me on a drip that I used maybe 3x. I was sent home with jugs of liquid Roxi & percocet that looked like the bottle was a gallon. I still had over 100 morphine pills at home already and a few oxy. I took the pain meds for a week after discharged as instructed. The 2nd week I started to wean under direction of the pain mgmt clinic and by the 4th week after discharge, I wasn't taking anything. It was at my discretion to take only as needed. I felt fine..even with all that in the house I didn't have the temptation..I only like to feel sleepy when it's time to sleep. My 1 1/2yr was proving that child proof didn't apply to him and that scared me, so I released everything to my Dr. My Mother has been on Vicodin for like 20yrs and there has been times when she's been without a day or 2 and didn't have withdrawal symptoms. I don't think my Fam has an addictive gene. I think that there should be med maintenance. The Dr's should be more responsible when prescribing.

KS, I completely agree with you about the fact that addicts are making almost impossible for people that need pain killers, to get them. I have been in chronic pain for the last 12 years and I have had to jump through so many hoops to finally get 5/325 hydrocodone. I know this is going to sound crazy, but I call them "MY GOD." They gave me back some quality of life. Before them, I couldn't do anything including playing with the kids and doing basic household chores. It makes me so mad that doctors are so reluctant to sign a script for someone that truly needs these, while some will give them to someone that just wants to get high. Not only that, my doctors all had medical proof that I was not faking it. I've also seen a couple people go through withdrawals from opioids and I thought they were going to die. It's not something to abuse at any rate. They told me it was like having the flu horribly, a horrible cold, and pain like child birth. Scary!

honestly if a person has an addictive personality then its easy to get addicted to anything and i mean anything even lipstick, so before you say they choose to be realize nobody chooses to be an addict.

Listen up guys and gals...let's make something clear. Addiction and dependance are different things. Yes pills can be addicting however dependance is an actual natural reaction within the body. It doesn't make u a bad person! When u take these meds the release an overload of chemicals that naturally occur in the brain to give u the nice no pain feeling. After taking these meds for a period of time your brain no longer naturally produces these chemicals because it has became accustom to you providing the chemicals with pills. So suddenly stopping the meds leaves you with an actual chemical imbalance in your body and it will ache and scream for dopamine to be released. Unfortunatly it takes a long time for the brain to catch on and slowly begin to start producing the chemical again. This is the cause of withdrawl. Instead of dealing with the agonizing waiting period you know how to make it happen now...take a pill! Tolerance is your body just getting used to the dose your taking and causing you to take more to reach the same affect. Tolerance, dependance and withdrawl are all natural reactions to adding a substance to your body. It works for pills tobacco and even caffiene! Addiction is when you are so affected by these issues that you change your lifestyle and everything becomes about the finding of the meds to feel normal and you suddenly have no other cares of who or what suffers especially the ones closest to you. So some of you should stop looking down at other people because something like a car accident can turn a normal succesful loving person into a street walker looking for their next fix. 9 times out of ten they just feel helpless and horrible about everything but no longer know how to live correctly or even have the willpower to change. Another problem in this is what drs prescribe. Doctors don't Want to prescribe long acting pain meds cause they think they are addicting however its been proven that taking short acting pain meds multiple times a day rather than one strong pill that will last all day is far more likely to lead to addiction. If u have a surgery they give u lots of short acting pain meds with refills. Every time you take a pain med along with the chemical changes it also triggers the pleasure-reward center in your brain. Having to do that multiple times a day for a long period of time instead of getting one long acting pain med a day has a lot to do with turning physical dependance into addiction. There are always going to be people who will abuse anything they get however there are many more things that the medical and psych community need to look at when trying to reduce the risk of addiction and compassion and understanding needs to play a large part in it. Good luck to you all!

I agree with D, these are very addictive!!! I had an accident 6 years ago, where I broke my ankle, then got a DVT, which landed me on my death bed and 2 surgeries. I started taking the meds in 06 because of the pain in my leg and horrible back pain. I've tried to get my doc to get me off of them. After about 2 years, Istopped taking them and got really sick, thought it was the flu,so went to my doc and told him I had stopped, he advised I was going through withdrawals!! He suggested I continue to take for the pain and believe me,it took the withdrawal symtoms away immediately! He then suggests I see pain mgmt, and that doctor prescribes morphine!!! idiots!! I'm sticking with these, they help and I only take the recommended dosage! will not stop taking them unless I have some help from the withdrawals!

My family physician changed my prescription from vicoprofen to hydrocodone/APAP 10/500 for severe back pain. I was diagned with degenerative disc disease at 28 y/o and have developed severe muscle spasms and pain radiating into my left left. An MRI revealed bulging disks, decreased disk space, degenerative disc disease and a lot of other stuff in the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spines. I also had gastric bypass surgery 3 years and have to monitor what I take. Motrin was always my drug of choice, but I'm not supposed to take that anymore because of the irritation to the stomach lining. When I took my prescription to the pharmacy, they asked me if I wanted blue or pink pills. I had a dumb, blank look on my face because I have no idea why they asked that. The tech told me to just pick one, so I told her to pick one for me because I didn't know what the heck she was talking about. What is the difference?
