Was Just Diagnosed With Hypothyroidism

Updated

I hope someone can help! I am 53 years old and 5 feet tall and weigh 118 lbs. I never have had any symptoms . I went to my doctor 3 weeks ago and she tells me I have to go on medication for life! She did run blood work twice. I wish I knew my levels so could tell you but I don't. She started me on 50mcc a day of levothyroxin. The only symptom I am having right now is a little fuzzy memory. If I didn't have any symptoms do I really have to take meds for the rest of my life? I am a healthy eater and exercise on a regular basis and happy with my life. Can someone help. I don't take any meds besides supplements.

Hi Becky,

I’m not going to tell you to ignore your doctor’s advice, but I’m really glad my dad did when they told him he only had 6 months to live due to a deadly cancer. Now here he is 30 years later and he thinks the older doctor who told him that has probably already passed away. So I guess what I’m really trying to say or question is that if nothing “feels” inherently wrong with you, then is it wrong to trust and believe in your own capabilities and what your body needs, knowing that you’re taking advice from someone who’s only seen you for “5 minutes” in their office? Just something to think about. Thyroid levels can also vary from moment to moment, day to day, depending on how we treat, feed, and fuel our bodies. One example is that eating too many goitrogenic foods have been shown to suppress and interfere with thyroid function/hormone synthesis. So if you're eating healthy, these foods include things like: cabbage, millet, turnips, kale, rutabaga, radish, cauliflower, etc. Although my research suggests that cooking them may help counteract this effect.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

I recently attended an inservice on hypothyroidism and it was stated that untreated hypothyroidism can lead to seizures

I am 50 years old 5'2"118lbs. I also have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism with no symptoms. Had blood work done twice with apparent same result. Have been taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine for 9 days now and feel terrible. Headaches, mind fog, and just starting to experience mood swings. I am seriously considering stopping the med and going herbal but am afraid any suggestions or advice?

thyroid is a glad that is very much overlooked and yet can play havoc with one's health...as I see the comments are made by women in their 50th ages which hover around menopause....this can play an important role with the thyroid being suddenly involved...I was on thyroid medication before starting meno pause...my thyroid played havoc with my body..and I had to increase and increase the medication during peri-menopause and during meno pause... after decrease to my normal level which I am on since ending meno -pause..I know of others who went through horrible experiences during that time..when i suggested to have their thyroid checked. needs to be done several times to see if it is actually affected.. and ALL had problems and needed to take medication during the meno pause..duration...so have it checked several times even while you are on it as it might have to be increased and also decreased,,,until your body accepts the right dosage your body needs...when the female hormones with the other hormones ..such as the meno pause .adrenal glads and thyroid glads are not in sinc it can affect so many things...they are a small part of our bodies bit can play absolute havoc with the rest of the body and one's well being.....the opposite can lead to heart attacks... all happened within my circle of friends and myself...so have it continuously checked for a while....if it is Always on the low end of the high end...
either needs to be address...most Md's see in WITHIN THE NORMAL RANGE and do nothing about it...yet if it is always at the higher or lower end of the scale it NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. GOOD LUCK.

I was wondering if there are any natural medications or supplements available for hypothyroidism. As I stated in my first post, levothyroxine does not seem to be agreeing with me. it was very hard for me to even start this med when I was having absolutely no symptoms - no fatigue, no weight gain, nothing but nevertheless after the second blood test I figured I would try it against my better judgement and now I feel terrible. Is there any other natural med or supplement out there that anyone has actually used and can say it has worked for them?

Try the ones that are Armour , Naturethyroid, and several more . Look them up or join the support group for hypothyroidism. I went into Hashmotis that is a autoimmune disease. But I feel better on the NDT meds
