Trileptal /joint Pain

Updated

I have been taking Trileptal for about a year for TN. I have been experiencing joint pain more and more. My neurologist thinks this is not a side effect? I just want to know if anyone else has this problem!! Also has any natural ways to deal with TN worked for anyone?

Hello, Tina! How are you?

Your neurologist is most likely right, typically this medication is known to cause back pain, but not joint pain, as listed by the FDA and NIH.

My fiancé is on this medication, so I've read up on it quite a bit. Other typical side effects are listed as possibly including weight changes, dry mouth, change in taste, earache and muscle weakness.

Are you on any other medications?

Can anyone taking this for TN chime in with their experience?

Hi there!! Thanks for your reply! This is the only medication I am taking. I am trying to stop it! I feel like it is making me ache! The neurologist said she would try me on something else like Amitriptyline all these medications I feel are toxic but I am stuck! I did try Tegrotal before and it made my eyes really blurry and I could not function! I just don't want to keep trying medications. Just so scary! My TN is really controlled with the Trileptal so I am just going to really focus on my diet and stress! Many blessings to you and your fiancé!

Thank you!

And I do understand, the medication guessing game can be very frustrating.

Please post back and keep me updated!

I took this medication for only a few weeks in 2013. This drug was recommended after depicote made my hands hurt horribly. (Problem with this: it's my understanding that these two drugs are extremely similar to one another) a couple days into taking it my feet started killing me. I have my dance degree and never had foot pain like this. I stopped/ refused the medication in 2013. Now in 2016 my feet still hurt every day and I cannot dance. Coincidence? No way this is coincidental but Drs told me that this is not a side effect. Their dead wrong.

Hi, I wanted to share with you my experience with Triliptal. I started taking oxcarbazepine in February 2016 and started having problems with neck pain by March 2016. I usually have neck pain due to some old accidents, so I thought I needed to get an adjustment again. However, I also noticed I had a dry hacking cough. My neck pain (tension) grew worse, so I went to a CVS clinic to see if I had a throat infection. The strep test came out positive. I felt a little better for about a month and then the pain got worse. In July I went to my doctor's office and told her I read the medicine can cause coughing and sore throat. I made the mistake in telling her I had strep throat in May, so she said it could be it was coming back and I should go see my family doctor. I waited because I just felt something was not right. By the time I realized I was having an allergic reaction, I was even experiencing pain on my hands and finger tips, I thought I was hurting from the carpal tunnel. I finally decided to get off the medicine and took some antihistamines. After three days off the Triliptal my neck felt so much better. It's been a week now and even my hands are feeling better. If you don't feel right, listen to your body. After I went to the doctor to let her know I got off, she herself realized it was an allergic reaction/side effect of the medicine. I suffered six months and spent money on massages/therapy thinking it was what I needed. Hope you feel better.
