I was on topiramate for the last 2 1/2 years for migraines. I am a therapist and was getting pretty fed up with the cognitive side effects, as well as hope to try and have a baby in the next year so I stopped taking it. Cognitive side effects went away immediately for me, however I have gained 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks. I read about this and was worried, but given the fact that I never really lost much weight on the drug, I didn't think it would effect me in that way. Just be warned, you may love the weight loss now, but it comes back on when you stop it even if you are eating right and exercising! ## Although weight loss is listed as a general side effect of Topiramate, for some reason I get the sense that this medication plays with your hormones as well; which would explain why t...

I was prescribed Topamax by my doctor because she thought it would help 1. to eliminate headaches I had been having and 2. to help in weight loss. I have suffered from depression and she felt this would be an added benefit in helping that, or at least it would not hurt it. I do suffer from fatigue and I was told this may be a side effect so I was told to take this at night time. I started 25 mg for the first month and all was fine, I did not notice much. I then added another 25 mg for a total dose of 50 mg. and on the second day I was having memory type problems so I reduced the dose back to the 25mg. I waited another 2 weeks and added the additional 25mg and it seemed OK. I was taking 50 mg for about 6 weeks and the only side effect was that about an hour after taking my dose I would f...

I was on this drug for a long time for a mood disorder. I kept complaining of shortness of breath on small amounts of excersise. My eyes started to droop and I couln't breath. The Dr. diagnosed me with Myathesia Gravis. I was on oxygen and palnning to die early. They gave me IVIG therapy and this didn't work. Finally after taking medications for this supposed ilness for 6 months aqnd having reactions to the meds, the neurologist finally said that the Topamx could be causing the symptons of Mya thesia Gravis. I stopped taking the medicine and I can breath and do all sorts of things now. ## I was put on this medication 3 1/2 yrs ago for a seizure disorder. It worked well for about 9 mos. started having more and longer seizures. then jan 2005 had 7 in a row. I had speech problemsdy...

My co-worker is currently on Topamax and is losing a lot of weight but I have some concers. Does anyone have input...please advise. ## I can tell you that it is not FDA approved to be used as a weight loss drug. There are usually reasons they do not approve it for some specific use, so that would cause me to have concerns right there. There are many options on the market that are approved as safe for weight loss. This drug can also cause some bad side effects, such as tingling of the hands and feet, cognitive disfunction and permanent vision loss. ## Well actually her doctor prescribed it for depression but she is losing weight and keeps telling me I need to take it and she also said her feet have tingled but I'm not certain about switching anti-depressants at this time. ## be carfu...

I stopped taking Topamax in July and subsequently starting dosing up with Lamictal. Two weeks ago I was at 150 mg and as of Friday, 8/24 at 175 mg. I had blood work done 8/24 and neurologist says my levels are too low and I'll lose my license. This happened with Topamax 2 years ago, Dr. asked why I wasn't taking it, I was! They asked me the same thing today, if I was taking my meds. Every day, same time. 75 mg in am; 100 mg in pm. Anyone have any ideas as to where its going? ## That is an odd situation. Are you also taking any specific supplements or certain OTC medications with this prescription? I've read a number of different posts on here from patients who say they take a pill and their body just doesn't absorb it. It simply passes through their digestive system into...

I started topamax 25 mg 5 days ago as a mood stabilizer. I gained 80+ lbs from previous ones and antidepressants. I had no side effects until this morning I woke up feeling nauseous. I haven't been able to smoke a cigarette at all today and my stomach has been in severe cramps since I ate a sandwich about three hours ago. I feel as though I could vomit. I also noticed I am urinating more frequently even though I haven't increased my water intake (I always drink a lot). My question is, is e weightless going to come as a result of this stomach pain and not being able to eat? Will the stomach pain subside? I'm supposed to go up to 50mg in two days. I guess I'll wait and see... ## Stomach pain isn't listed as a normal side effect. Learn more Topamax details here. You sho...

I am on Topomax for a seizure disorder (haven't had one in almost 10yrs) so because I am also on another medication which doubles to prevent seizures my doctors feels I could come off the Topomax- I don't need two - it certainly didn't help my migraines. However in the past two weeks coming off the med I've gained 6 pounds and I'm not eating any differently! Has anyone else had this happen. I've worked very hard to keep my weight down and getting very hungry and freaking out! Thanks. ## How long have you been taking the other medication and what specific medication is it? It could be a combination of it and the Topamax, actually. Learn more Topamax details here. It's difficult to know how anyone will react to any particular medication and/or discontinuing one.

I have had bulimia for 20 years. The disorder started when I was 11 years old...essentially because of a traumatic childhood circumstance. I also have bipolar disorder. My questions. 1. How long does it take for the binge cravings to go away? 2. What dose is effective (I am on 50mg daily now) 3. Has anyone with severe bulimia had success? ## I don't have any personal experience with this medication, but wanting to help, I did find another thread on here with other Topamax patients, that may offer more insight to answering some of your questions: Discuss/Topamax-and-Binge-Eating-Disorder-231043.htm I hope this helps!

I started getting severe headaches back in high school. my migraines started in college, especially post college. I am almost 25. I was prescribed Maxalt to get rid of my migraines at first which did not help at all. my neurologist would up my dosage and to say the least, it was like tylenol. it did nothing. Relpax was like my miracle drug. my issue was that over the past year or two, my migraines worsened and because you're not supposed to take relpax more than twice a day or three times a week, I felt that taking a daily pill would be the best option. I've been on Topamax for 2 weeks now and have seen a significant difference in my migraines. My work environment has been extremely stressful especially in the past couple of days and usually I would be coming home with a migrain...

I am a current PM patient (15 yrs) and am prescribed methadone and neurontin and amitryptaline and oxycodone. I want to know if topamax usage will show up on my regular every 25 day urinalysis? Will this show up as anti-convulsant (as neurontin would) or wil it list the specific drug or drug metabolite present in the Topamax?

Does anyone know a good substitute for Topamax? It has be about ten days since I took the last dose of Topamax. The Dr. lowered my dose to 10mg, I took 200mg twice a day for maybe 3-4 months before it started to cause problems. I even fell 3 times!!! I am a 55 year old grandmother & I help with my grand kids. I have severe migraine headaches at least 4 times a week, I've had TMJ surgery 10 times, just chewing can give me a migraine. The Topamax seemed to help before the bad side effects started. Now I can't get rid of the dizziness, numbness, pin & needles and pain in my hands arms feet and legs. I am back to sitting on the couch all of the time with my ice pack tied around my head! I also take Paxil and pain meds just to get by. ## Have you tried any of the beta blocker...

When Will The Pin & Needles, Numbness, Dizziness, and Clumsiness Stop after I quit taking Topamax? ## How long has it been since you stopped taking this medication? I found out that the half life of this drug is just over 20 hours; meaning that it pretty much takes a full day for 'half of a single dose' to get eliminated from the body. Depending on the dosage & duration of time you've been taking this drug, it seems as if it would be in your system for up to weeks at a time. Perhaps this is why you're still experiencing possible withdrawal symptoms or side effects. That's just my theory anyway. I would consider talking to your doctor about tapering off if the symptoms get worse or too bothersome. Hope this helps! ## It has be about ten days since I took the la...

I have been prescribed Topamax for binge eating. This will be my third time taking it. Each time I go off of it I do so believing I can conquer my eating disorder myself; however, I have been unsuccessful in breaking the cycle. Topamax helps me calm my cravings and balance my moods. I have read that it is not as effective the more times one starts and stops the medication. I have only back on the medication a short two weeks and feel a very little difference; perhaps I am inpatient because I know what I did feel like prior to coming off of it. Is anyone aware of its effectiveness once stopped and readministered with regard to binging and weight loss? Thank you. ## Actually, the opposite is usually true, taking a break from a medication helps keep your body from growing tolerant to it, s...

I have a bottle of 25MG Topamax that I take 3 pills (75MG) at bedtime for extreme headaches that make my skull bulge where the pain is. I noticed that the pills expired 3/22/2011 but I no longer have medical insurance. Are they still ok to take? ## Topamax isn't a medication that gets dangerous, per se, after the expiration date. But it does start to lose effectiveness, so it will not work as well as it did, when it was new. The effectiveness will also be affected by how it was stored. For instance, if it was stored in a dark, relatively cool, dry place, then it will degrade much slower than if it was store in a brightly lit, warm, damp area. Learn more Topamax details here. I know it isn't always financially possible, or practical, but as soon as you can, the best thing you can...

I'm allergic to sulfa antibiotics and have been hesitant to start my new script- I just read some posts about it being common to be allergic to topamax with a sulfa allergy... Scared to try my new drug- ;) anxiety is why he prescribed it... Ugh ## I am really not sure how effective this would be at treating anxiety. Topamax contains the active ingredient Topiramate and it is an anticonvulsant, though it has also been used to treat migraines and bipolar disorder. Learn more Topamax details here. I haven't found anything mentioning it being common to be allergic to it, if you have a sulfa allergy. Additionally, a sulfa antibiotic allergy and other sulfa drugs aren't the same thing and being allergic to one doesn't necessarily mean you're allergic to the other. However,...

What appetite suppresant is safe to use with Cymgen, Welbutrin, Topamax and Epilum? I have Bipolar Disorder. My weight gain is really a problem. ## Have you consulted your doctor? With your medical history and the medications that you're on, it would be remiss of anyone not familiar with your medical file to try and suggest any medication for you to use, as it could be very dangerous. However, your doctor should be able to help you discover what are the best and safest weight loss solutions for you.

I have been on topamax for almost 3 years to prevent migraine. I am in my 50's, and on other medications, including deptran and atenolol. At first my side affects were quite severe, so I had to stay on the initial dose of 25mg at night for a few weeks. The main side effects were - word finding difficulties, dry mouth, taste loss, loss of food cravings, and alcohol intolerance, and some tingling and numbness in feet and hands at times. But my headaches stopped, they had been debilitating for a very long time, so I was going to persevere with the side effects. After about 18months or so, I have had breakthrough headache/migraine, and my weight has gone up. My cravings are back, for food and alcohol. Should I increase my night dosage, or not. ## What has your doctor recommended? It is ...
