Topamax Added To Seraquel

I have been treated for bipolar 2 for 3 yrs and have been on several different meds (lamictal,lithium,abilify,seraquel and a few others). Recently went into my pdoc (I'm on 300mg lamictal, 150mg seraquel and mentally doing the best ever). But, I've gained almost 30 lbs since being on seraquel which has now become a deal breaker. My pdoc put me on topomax for weight loss 3 days ago. Any experience with topomax causing weightloss even while remaining on seraquel? (Side note: avid exerciser, high intensity, and follow a south beach diet, strict). Thanks for any responses, much thanks!

I have to be honest and say that I am against treating the side effects from one medication with another medication, because in my opinion and experience, it just creates a vicious circle.

And I really don't think it's going to help with weight loss, as long as you're still taking the other medication. That's kind of like eating twinkies while drinking diet soda, if you get what I mean.

It might be time to change your diet and go away from the South Beach, since it doesn't work well for everyone.

I am also bipolar and was on Seroquel and Topomax. I gained 60+ pounds and was like a walking zombie from that damn Seroquel and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! 600mg. The Topomax was supposed to aid with the weight gain, but c'mon...that's like fixing a bullet hole with a band aid. Eventually, I was prescribed Phentermine and even that AND exercise wasn't cutting it, so back then (2004?) we d/c'd the Seroquel and replaced it with Abilify. That too was a weight gainer, but paled in comparison. Now, I'm on Geodon which is technically an anti-psychotic, but it works and I saw a quick drop of 25 pounds from the move from Abilify and felt more clear in my head and my self-confidence came back. Also, I'm sure I am more healthy because I'm not carrying all that extra poundage around at 5'2". Good luck.
