Switching From Loestrin 24 Fe To Minastrin 24 Fe (Page 6)

Updated

Hey Guys!
So I went to the pharmacy to pick up my monthly pack of LoEstrin 24 Fe two weeks ago, only to find out that the makers of LoEstrin 24 Fe discontinued the pills and are replacing it with Minastrin 24 Fe. (I am VERY disappointed to report that I was NEVER notified of the discontinuation, as my reproductive health care is apparently not a priority of my pharmacy or my doctor). My pharmacist says it's the same pill as it is made by the same company and contains the same amount of hormones in it, the only difference is that this pill is chewable. The pharmacist then proceeded to tell me that she would be happy to fill in the prescription for me expect that since she could not get a hold of my doctor to approve the Minastrin, I could not purchase it which caused me to start my pack late. I was supposed start the new pack on a Sunday at 9pm but did not start it until Monday morning at 10:40am when the pharmacist finally got a hold of my doctor (this would put me at taking the pill roughly 13 hours late). I then proceeded to take my normal dosage for Monday night at 9pm. When my boyfriend and I are sexually active we always use condoms and pull out, in addition to taking the pills but since I started my pack late, I'm very worried that my birth control pills aren't effective. I haven't been sexually active at all this month because I'm too nervous about an unplanned pregnancy. The pharmacist told me that as long as I double up on taking two pills on Monday (which is what I did) I should be fine and no additional contraceptive is needed but the nurse at my gyno's office says that the pills won't be effective for two weeks and that during that time I need to use another form of contraception. I don't know who to believe! Does anyone have any insight on this, or has anyone been through something like this while making the switch from LoEstrin 24 Fe to Minastrin 24 Fe? Is there a high possiblity that a pregnancy could occur if I decide to become sexually active this month, as I started the new pill pack late? Thanks for your help!

Lizzybelle Let us know if it's better. (especially in the hair dept) I had to refill my Minastrin, so I have to take this crap for 27 more days. I have a rash behind my knee, that I suspect is related to it. I looked up the inactive ingredients, and I can't figure out what Linoleoyl Polyoxylglyceride even is, so probably related. The only known allergy I have is maxi pads with super absorbents (always kotex every brand in the store pretty much) It would just be my luck I'm allergic to something else weird.

I start it on Sunday and I'm so nervous! After all the bad reviews for ministrin I was scared to take it. This is my last few days on loestrin 24 fe. It was the very best one!

I have had the same experience. Similar weight to you I've always been 125. Didn't change much and I've gained 15 lbs! I'm stopping. Have you had trouble losing the weight.

LizzyBelle I had took 2 of the Minastrin, I just put them up, and started the Lomedia 24 on the first day, my period might come 2 days later, but this hive looking rash behind my knee made me decide to just go ahead and switch. I'll always have them handy in case someone I know ever needs a morning after dose. I could look up the dosage. I could have saved so many girls from praying for a month after a condom broke during my teenage years if the info had been available. I remember having a year supply, but I didn't know I could of helped someone. Sad.

I've just started my 2nd month on Minastrin Fe this week. I was also forced to switch from Loesterin 24 Fe which I used for about 6 years. I was scared to switch too as Loesterin 24 Fe worked so well for me. I decided to give Minastrin a try and to my surprise it hasn't been so bad. I got my period on time after my first pack. But the first day I was cramping a bit, but solved that with Advil. I was a bit emotional the first couple of days of the first pack but that went away. Nothing too crazy, no spotting or any headaches due to the pills. So far so good.

That's good to hear. If you do start to have any issues with it please let me know.I in the last week of the 4th month on minastrin. Haven't had any issues other than my cycle is a little aggravating. If you read any of my other post, you'll know what I'm talking about. I had a 7 day cycle aster first. Minastrin has taken that down a lot but I'm still having a discharge (brown stuff) at least 3to 4 days after my flow. That is still making my cycle at least 6 or so days...not sure why. I'm hoping this cycle will be different. I'll see how out goes this weekend. I how it continues to work well for you. For the most part I am liking it...my cycle has always been weird and I'm just wanting a shorter one....that's all. Helping with the flow, cramps and pregnancy....DEF a winner in my book. I have absolutely no cramps. I did for the first cycle but after that I was good. Good luck to everyone whether you stay with minastrin, switch to lomedia or a different brand. I did call Walmart also about lomedia (price checking) and I was Todd that it was $77 without insurance?...I wanted to know how much it was without insurance because at the moment I don't have any (open enrollment messed up @my job...another story..). If it's $77 with insurance, how much if it without?.does anyone know? I'll have to call Walmart again. Minastrin is almost $100 without insurance. At least this wool be my last month buying without insurance (being added to husband's).

Dang 77$? Mine was free with Cigna. 77 seems high for even retail price for a generic. Retail was 104 for Minastrin. (greedy sobs) Carebear you could try popping out the first 2 brown pills and putting in 2 white ones from another pack. So 26 days of white pills then 2 brown then start another pack. Bet that would bring you down to at least 3-4 day period total. I bought an extra pack of my daughter's pills to try to replace her placebos. She is on sprintec with 7 placebo pills. Her dr said to try the 3 pack active/one week placebo with junel 21, but the first month of that (second week) and she started bleeding halfway through, and I made them switch her. It wasn't spotting it was 12 days of regular period. I'm afraid to try the 3 pack thing with her now. If it keeps happening, I'm going to take her to my doctor and see about lomedia for her, She is autistic and I can't just keep her out of school to deal with massive breakthrough for months and wait it out. She is twice my size, so I figured maybe the junel wasn't a high enough dose, but she was spotting this morning on the higher dose Sprintec, so maybe I was wrong. And they prescribed her sprintec 28 so insurance won't even let me get it in time to skip placebos, which was the whole point, so I don't know what her dr is thinking. She seemed annoyed when I called about her bleeding for 12 days on active pills.

Thanks Rhonda, I was actually wanting to try that and I think I might. I street my brown pill tomorrow and I'm picking my new pack up today. I hope you can find something that will work for your daughter soon. The 12 day thing is not good. I you're things you well and thanks so much for the advice. I'll let you know what I decide.

Yea it is but I don't have health insurance just a discount card. My periods stopped 3 months after I started loestrin 24 fe. Hopefully it stays the same with lomedia!

I too was on Loestrin and was switched to Minastrin. At first I experienced headaches but those died down a few months in. One side affect that I am very confused about is my libido. I feel like ever since being on this pill, I have no sexual desire what so ever. I also feel like I cant get wet! Is anyone else experiencing this? What did you do? Has another pill fixed this problem? What's the point of being on the pill if you can't even enjoy your safe sex???

I was so pissed when I ha to switch to minastrin. And I was seriously nervous that because I had to chew it it wouldn't work as well. Who ever heard of a birth control that has to be chewed?!? I took it for 2 months and I was so uncomfortable and felt so unprotected while I was on the pill that I called my Gyno and had them prescribe me a new pill. It's actually the generic version of loestrin, the only difference is that it had 7 placebo pills instead of 4. I was on loestrin for 4 years and I loved it. I had a regular period every month and I knew the exact time of day that I would get it. But after two months on minastrin I had irregular periods. I wish they would just keep making loestrin.
