Has anyone used the new SUPREP kit before a colonoscopy?

Would like any comments about taste, ease or side effects.

Thanks!

Took first dose at 6pm. Taste not terrible; didn't have aftertaste. My greatest fear was having to drink another quart (32 oz.) of water within the hour. But it was actually harder at the 20 minute mark than at the hour mark (I dunno - maybe my stomach stretched or something).

First BM in 55 min. When walking the bathroom I thought I had 30 seconds, so stopped for something. BIG mistake! I didn't have even 15 seconds. Happily I was still dressed, so didn't mess up the rug or anything. Sat on pot for 35 min.

Second BM at 8pm. No biggie; only sat there 10 min.

Read comments on being cold. In bathroom a bit chilly with window open, but computer thermometer reads 50 degrees out, so not bad. I'm lucky to have foot warming boots, which make all the difference. When my feet are warm I have the feeling of being warm all over.

One good thing I did: I wore a pair of short pants with an elastic "belt". It wasn't needed - I didn't have a panic run to the bathroom - but the piece of mind it gave was nice.

If you're concerned about the colonoscopy you're having, don't be. I had one once before and the only noticeable thing was the initial insertion push, which was on worse than a medium BM. After that I didn't a thing & was fascinated watching the implement thread it's way along up my colon. (Ask the Dr. to turn the TV towards you so you can see.) But the worse thing by far was the prep.

IMPORTANT - If you're one of those who are saying "never again", read the last part of Message 212.

I took this stuff last week. Short answer: it wasn't so much the taste that bothered me, but the aftertaste. And I discovered that a small sip of apple juice after each gulp of the Suprep cut the aftertaste a lot.

I did feel kind of sick at my stomach, and did have some chills, but nothing too bad.

How I arrived at this: I had eggs and a plain bagel for breakfast, then liquids the rest of the day. About an hour before I started the Suprep, I drank a can of warm chicken broth. (Next time, I'll not drink anything for an hour or two beforehand.) I started taking the first dose about 6:15pm, following directions. After deciding it was nasty, I diluted it with more water. Mistake! I just had more nasty tasting stuff to drink. It took me a bit more than an hour to get it all down; I started chasing my gulps with big gulps of water after about 45 minutes. If your stomach can take guzzling, say, two 8 oz gulps all at once, go for it; my stomach can't.

I didn't have any trouble drinking all the water afterward. My bowels started moving about 8:30; I was done about 10:30.

My next dose was at 8am. I mixed half the second dose with grocery store brand 7-up. This didn't help. I took a little sip of 7-up before the big gulp of medicine, and another after. This didn't help. Then I took a sip of apple juice after. That cut the aftertaste; I then realized it was the aftertaste that was so nasty. I got all that down in 15 minutes. I mixed the second part of the second dose with water, chased with apple juice, and got that down in about 30 minutes.

I pretty much started moving right after that, and was done before noon. Again, no problem getting the rest of the clear liquids down. My appointment was at 3:30. I was knocked out and don't remember anything. Afterwards I came home, ate a can of soup and a bagel, and went to bed. Slept for about 12 hours. Normal bowel movements started about 3 days later.

Lessons: maybe start the low-fiber low-residue diet a day earlier than suggested. Maybe start the all-liquid diet a bit sooner. Don't drink anything an hour or two before you take this. Chase the stuff with apple juice. Keep the bathroom warm, and stay close! Schedule your appointment so that you don't have to get up and take the second dose in the middle of the night. Going without solid food for 36 hours is easier than you might think.

I hope this helps. The comments on this website helped me get through this ordeal. Thanks all!

I don't know if you saw my earlier tips, but when I do mine (and I've done a bunch), I chug everything. Just take a deep breath and then chug away. After the Suprep, I take a small sip of Gatorade to cut the aftertaste. Water is water, I just stand there and chug it, too. I'm not a big person, so I was surprised that it all went down so easily although I felt completely bloated after 48 oz. of fluid. The Suprep works well and really cleans you out.

Thanks cocoam! It took 45 minutes until the first bathroom trip. I was able to drink all the liquid in the hour time frame. I might try to drink the first 16 ounces of it right after the suprep like you suggested the second time around. I was told I can use a clear liquid (ie apple juice) as the fluid, so I diluted down some apple juice with water (unless I am really dehydrated water doesn't taste the best and it wont go down) which worked. I'll see what happens when doing the second half of the prep tomorrow morning.

Good for you, Mel. I would have recommended drinking the water right after the 1st dose. You'd be surprised how much liquid your body can hold. Hope your colonoscopy comes out clean!

I just finished drinking the first bottle of Suprep. It did not taste bad at all to me. It tasted like Robitussin, just a little less strong. I thought it would be a lot worse than it was. I watched a you tube video on it before taking it by someone who had to take it, which calmed me down a little because it didn't look too bad. I am really full now though, and might have a hard time getting the 2 16-ounce cups of water down in an hour. The 2nd bottle I am supposed to take tomorrow morning. It has been 1/2 hour since drinking the first bottle of Suprep, and no bathroom trips yet. I can feel it go through me pretty fast though, so I am near a bathroom. Also, someone previously mentioned getting a chill/becoming cold after drinking it. That happened to me too; I am very cold right now.

I with you all the way! Of the four or five colonoscopies I have had, this was by far the easiest prep. The banana flavored popsicles cleared the taste immediately. I'd take a bite after each sipping session (through a large straw). I will beg for it each time I have a colonoscopy (every five years).

Obviously the sensitivity people have to the flavoring and the chemicals themselves varies widely between individuals. I diluted the Suprep to 12 oz per instructions and drank it straight down. Seemed to me to be a slightly-salty flavored water. SOOOO much better than the gallon of PEG I drank last time. Two more 12-oz glasses of water were no problem. Had my first bowel movement about 30 minutes later, and an hour after that was completely cleaned out. Sat there working a crossword puzzle while the sulfates did their duty. No nausea, abdominal pain or anything else. Slept very soundly last night, and just drank the second batch of Suprep and another 12 oz of water this morning, and waiting for it to work through. From reading some of these posts, it is clear that the systems of some folks are sensitive to this stuff, but I will request it next time I need a colonoscopy.

The trick is Zofran! Take Zofran one hour before you need to drink that salty mess and you will not be nauseous! I hate lots of liquids and have never been able to get a lot of liquid down. While drinking Suprep suck on a Jolly Rancher candy after each sip and take it slow! No need to chug down all liquid at once. The water was nice after the nasty stuff because of the horrible after taste. I only drank 3/4 of this stuff and it worked like a charm after about one hour! Clear two hours later!!! No cramping, burning, just super hungry! Chicken broth was amazing! Dont listen to all of these horror stories! I was so freaked out after reading everything and was so nervous all for nothing!

PS: I went to the SUPREP website and sent an email. Told them surely they could improve on the taste of this stuff. Maybe everyone should do this!

I had been overly anxious about having a colonoscopy for over a year. Finally decided to just get it over with. The liquid prep was the worst part for me. The taste is bad but I didn't gag or throw up. It did take longer than normal to start working. I mixed the first round with water and second with slightly flat ginge rale. While the ginger ale tasted slightly better, I had a harder time getting it down.

Update: Everything went well. No problems to report. I sat on the toilet for at least an hour but after four hours no more action. Hoping that the next dose goes as well tonight.

I took my first dose of Suprep about an hour ago. I was worried that it would be hard to get down but it was no problem at all. I had the solution down in about 3 minutes with a couple of sips of ginger ale in between. Reading the posts here made it sound worse than it is. It really is not that bad at all. I finished the additional 2 x 16oz waters within 20 minutes. No nausea, cramps pain of any kind. It started working within 30 minutes. I am using wipes and Prep H ointment. So far no problems. :-)

Don't worry fruitfly, it WILL happen. Don't get up after the first one, because the others will soon follow. Then get a little sleep and do the final dose. Good luck with your colonoscopy results. Hope it's as easy as mine.

this is my 3rd colonoscopy. I took the first dose of SUPREP about 3 hours ago - followed directions etc. Nothing is happening. My procedure is scheduled for tomorrow at 11am - I still have the second dose to take but I'm nervous. did this happen for anyone else?

Be careful using this product. I ended up in the local ER passing out with heartbeat down to 38bpm. ER doc started iv fluids with potassium to raise heart rythym to normal. I followed the instructions to the letter. The second time I prepped I split the dose in only one bottle, drank plenty of water as instucted like the first time. Guess what, Gastr Doc said everything went well and the colon was completly clean. I do agree with the other writers, this product should be based on body weight.

Thank you for your responses! The diarrhea finally stopped, and I feel much better. I'm taking miralax nightly to keep water in my colon, drinking lots of water, taking dicyclomine 3x a day and taking probiotic colon health pills daily... Hopefully I can get this IBS straightened out!
