Sudden Withdrawal From Neurontin (Page 6)

Updated

I have been taking 600 mg of Neurontin 4x a day for about 2 years and recentlty ran out of this medication due to excrutiating slow service from mandatory mail order RX company.... I was extremely agitated during this time (approx. 5 days), nervous, stressed out, etc. Has anyone else had these symptons as a result of sudden withdrawal from Neurontin? I can't understand why this happened, I felt so scared and lousy for that time. Is this a known reaction for this med? I haven't been able to find an answer. I take it for relief from carpel tunnel syndrom. Thanks

Yes, it is. I, too, had to stop due to strange and upsetting feelings and psychic pain. But I was on 100mg/day. Still detoxing and I hurt.

Has anyone tried PGM as an inhaler for arthritis pain and tissue regrowth? That is: Pentosan sulfate+Glucosamine sulfate+ MSM.
Do a search if not familiar. Vets use this and/or some of these compounds for arthritic animals.

I have been taking gabapentin for 5 days now to relieve withdrawal symptoms from a 3 year percocet addiction. If this is the last day I take it will I experience withdrawal from this also?

Smirf, no you shouldn't have any wd symptoms from the Gabapentin if you've only used it 5 days. However, you very well may go back to some opiate withdrawal. I've used Gabapentin three times for opiate withdrawals and keep it to a two week minimum. It takes all that acute withdrawal from the opiates, but when I go off it I get the lethargy and depression I would normally have after two weeks off opiates, but I don't feel any of the above mentioned problems associated with Gabapentin withdrawal. Still worth it in my book as those first two weeks off opiates are pure hell for me without Gabapentin. What dosage of Gaba have you been using?

YES! I am a medical transcriptionist and wish I had read more about Neurontin (Gabapentin) before starting it a year ago. I take 900 mg daily - (300 mg 3 times daily). I ran out for same reasons as your post - was out of it over a 3 day weekend and within the first 24 hours was a mess...itching, irritability, general overall horrible feeling, anxiety, out of it, you name it. This happened about one month ago, I have my script now but when I get back to the doctor I am talking about this with him. I came close to going to the emergency dept.

I don't care what anyone says! Every body IS different and is effected differently by medications. I have been on 600mg of Neurotin for about 4-5 weeks. (I am VERY sensitive to most medications)..About 2 weeks in, I started having horrible stomach aches about 30 minutes after taking a dose. Then these 'out of no where sweats', even in nice A/C..and I don't mean just a little moisture, I was dripping sweat to the point that my clothes and hair were soaked!)..then the worse hit. I was having dinner with my Husband and started with the sweats, followed up with shakes, stomach ache and felt like I was on the verge of a seizure or convultion. (I have never had a seizure, but my Daughter does have Seizure Disorder and just seeing one is beyond frightening...I certainly didn't want to have one), due to the timing, what I had left and my next Dr. Appt., I decided to start weaning myself off until I could talk to him, dropping down a pill every two days. (I had to as I only have 4 left and refuse to put another one in my body!) And, at the time, I thought that what I was going through while on it was bad?!?! I had NO idea of what was coming. Can you have withdrawals from this medication??? YES!!! I was hot and cold at the same time. Pouring sweat, with uncontroable chills and shakes at the same time yet NO fever. And my stomach, well we won't even go into those issues..NASTY!!! And talk about a headache, I would have to say that it's been more like a never ending Migrain! I'm feeling better today, but I think that is only thanks to another medication that they do give for patients going through withdrawal which I have to take on a daily basis due to a surgery back in 2009. Needless to say, if I make it through the night without a trip to the E.R., I am not looking forward to the scolding that I will have coming from my Dr. tomorrow. Please know your body, ask your Dr. about any questions or concerns that you may have about this medication BEFORE agreeing to take it. I sure wish that I would have!! Take care all and stay safe...and most of all, don't let anyone tell you that you are crazy and that this is impossible, because it is VERY POSSIBLE!!! (Just MY personal experience!)

Well, less then a month after I posted about Nuerotin making me sleepy at work, they fired me. Evidently it does strange things for me.Like cause me to fall asleep and make mistakes. My husband takes over 1,200 mg a day, and he is perfectly fine when he doesnt take it. Has went three days before refilling prescription. Me, besides making me dingy Im afraid to take it more than once in a while. So no job, You know side effects sound so mild on the paperwork, But when your experiencing them its a whole nother story.

I was taking neurontin 300mg, 3 times a day. Had to get off as it caused many side effects which the drug was supposed to help but didn't. Did a quick taper 5 weeks ago and almost immediately went into withdrawals. Profound fatigue, headaches, diahhreah, panic and anxiety, severe muscle and joint pain, nighttime seizures, fast heart beat and the list goes on and on. I am doing "The Road Back" program, a non-profit or. to help people get off this wicked drug and many others. You can download the book onto a kindle or order from amazon used. Without this program I think I would have went crazy. First you need to look up The Road Back/Neurontin and the information will tell you all about withdrawals and neurontin. I take the three products they recommend but you first you need the book. It is not expensive and the program has literally rescued me. I was skeptical at first but not anymore. Just judge for yourself and read the testimonties. God Bless and I hope the info. will encourage you that there is help.

I only used Gabapentin for opiate withdrawals and have never suffered any withdrawal from it. It eases the horrible symptoms of opiate withdrawal by about 90%. It's a miracle drug for me. However, I only use it for two or three weeks at most but in very high doses (1600-2000 mgs). I was originally prescribed it for neuropathy from chemo. I got hooked on opiates during cancer. I never used the GABA for the neuropathy and just happened to google opiate withdrawal help and Neurontin came up. I was so happy I had that bottle of Gabapentin still! It got me off a huge Oxycodone withdrawal with very few symptoms. But like I said, I make sure not to use it too long. I would like more people to know that this drug can really help you get off heroin or any other opiates. Withdrawal from opiates scare people so much they just keep using. It did take me several tries to get off opiates. The first two tries I didnt know about the Gabapentin and they were AWFUL. The next time I used Gabapentin and honest to god it was a breeze. I'm happy to say I am now off all pharmaceuticals and my cancer is in remission. For me, Gabapentin is a god send.

I can stop taking morphine and other stony med's and have some small withdraw's but Gabapentin I can't tolerate all the pain an weeks without sleep. And this is on a step down progeram. I'm not hooked i'v been on the same dose for 3 years. God bless to all that having med problem's and I hope the Lord can help us all with or strength. Mery Chirstmas :-)

I absolutely hear you. I slow tapered from a 900-1200mg daily dose over 7 weeks. The last dose was in August and I have sporadic symptoms. Some days are fine while others are just as bad as when I was on the med. I gained 40lbs on 2 years I was on gabapentin and another 20lbs since going OFF. I still sweat (hair sopping wet, underarms too) for no reason, my skin is a mess, rash on my neck and chest, the arch of my left foot has itchy pustules (like tapioca under the skin), I sometimes lose my balance, concentration, memory and speech problems and I alternate between high anxiety/restless and fatigued. I also have indigestion/heartburn often and my blood pressure is very high. I have never had high bp in my LIFE, always low! My doctor is at his wits end trying to determine the cause...adamant it cannot be the gabapentin w/d. I just went in for my second round of blood tests and have been referred to a dermatologist.
I wonder when or IF this will ever end...

I used to take 24,000mg a day. 30 800mg pills a day. I took up to 64,000mg one day. I swallowed them like candy. My doctor documented everything when I told him. He then gave me the. 30 pills. I waited 4hrs. He then tested me. My levels of neurontin was only 600mg. It is a good mood stabilizer and some help for leg pain. I lost 180lbs and now take 1800mg when needed.

Its so strange that my husband was prescribed 600 mg of Gaba in the AM and 1800 at night. He says it does nothing for the pain of nueropathy. Cymbalta seemed to help but they only give him one a day. He also claims no withdrawl if he stops Gaba. However he has had a very strange nausea that comes on daily and he sweats in his upper body but freezes below. He has had no weight gain, which he could use, but I would like to see him lower the immense amounts of Gaba and perhaps increase the Cymbalta. He will need something the rest of his life. He is suffering terribly. I do notice he is angry and short tempered but he doesnt feel angry and short tempered. I dont know what else you would call it if you sit and stare at the tv with arms folded across your chest for hours at a time and dont even know whea your watching. Since lost my job I take Gaba on occaision when I hurt bad but wont take it daily wish doctors would listen to ttheir paitient.
Right now I am going through insomia. Will have to detox from Hydrocodone since I run out each month. Dr wrote for amount that I needed and nurse refused to give me a script for correct amount. Likewise she wont refill early. Thinks she is the pill nazi. I hate painkillers. I would not take them if I could help it. And the pharmacy had a generic that is very weak. They say it is the same as the name brand but it is not. You need to take more to get relief. Yet with no insurance its all I can afford. Looks like bed is the only option for me. What a life.

I recently stopped taking Neurotin without easing off of it and I have been experiencing withdrawls that include nervousness, hyperactivity, and also night time seizure activity. Neurotin is a seizure medication therefore it will mess with your brain waves. I have a seizure disorder and take medication for that but was taking Neurotin for diabetic neuropathy. It has been my experience that the symptoms will eventually go away once the med is out of your system. But like any drug withdrawl can be very uncomfortable and disconcerting.

The doctors do not usually tell you that gaba is a seizure medication therefore it will interfere with brain function. I recently decided to take myself off of it after a year of severe digestive problems, slow speech, irritability, acute memory loss etc. It was not worth the side affects vrs the benefits of minimal relief from neuropathy. The problems you describe are due to the anti-seizure properties that the drug was original made for. So many doctors nowadays are prescribing drugs that were meant to treat for one thing to use for a totally different thing. I have a seizure disorder and take a seizure medication that is now a popular anxiety med. Medicare would not pay for it because they do not pay for anxiety medications even though I am prescribed it for the seizure benefits. I was even placed on disability for the seizure disorder and denied the very med I need for the disability. It is crazy. I even asked my doctor the last time I saw him if he knew WHY he prescribed the drug to me and he told me for anxiety. Scary eh?

I have been on neurontin for years now I am taking 800mg 3 times a day, sometimes 4.When I don't have it I feel so lifeless, stressed, agitated, very nervous, along with many other serious side affects including,I get very short tempered and the least little things tic me off causing me to out rage to where i can't even stand myself. I have no apatite, and it is the worse feeling I have ever felt, or been through in my life.
Other side affects while taking this awful drug includes dizziness, and extremely bad memory loss. Just about everybody in my family has taken this awful drug called neurontin. Obviously, most doctors don't realize the side affects, or risk of this awful drug when prescribing neurontin, otherwise it wouldnt be handed out so often.
I have been on many bad narcotics in my life, and have never experience side affects, or withdraws like I have with neurontin. My advise to anyone that has not yet taken this awful medication is that I would talk to my physician about other options.
