Suboxone/subutex

Updated

I've been taking one of these drugs now for 3 years and it is a miracle. I was on 15 100 microgram Fentanyl patches for 5 years for chronic back pain -- the drug ruled and ruined my life (marriage, relationships with children and friends, and job). It changed my personality, made me angry, nasty, aggressive, or incoherent. The ups and downs were crazy in terms of the drug effect. This makes little sense as the drug transmits the medication through your skin, slowly, and SHOULD last for 3 days. Normally, 10 patches should have been enough (for a 30-day period), but the 3rd day I felt sick -- not enough drug left in the patch. That's why I need 15 patches for the month, instead of 10. Anyway, I was taking 3 8mg Subs per day and it worked great. According to the doctor, anything above 24 (3 x 8mg) mg per day is not effective -- there is a ceiling on this drug, which is actually called Buprenorphine. This drug has been available overseas for YEARS and just got approved by the FDA in the USA around October 2002. It is a semi-synthetic opiate with PARTIAL agonist and antagonist actions whereas Fentanyl (Heroin, Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Morphine too) are opiates with FULL agonist and antagonist actions. The medication has a very long half life which I honestly don't fully understand, although I know that it lasts much longer than Fentanyl (and the others I mentioned above -- I was on every one of them at one point or another before graduating to Fentanyl). I can go 36 hours without medication if I need to whereas the others lasted only 6 hours before I started going into withdrawl. The drug is VERY expensive (like $10 per pill cost at the pharmacy) but there is a convenience factor when comparing this to Methadone -- you don't have to show up every day at the dispensary/clinic to receive your daily dosage. Also, Methadone is just as brutal, if not more so, to get off of than anything else I've mentioned above. Plus it eats away at your bone structure and teeth. Have you ever seen anyone who has been on it for many years? They look like they're 10-20 years older than what they actually are. If there's anyway you can avoid ANY and ALL of these drugs, that would be the best. But if you need something for pain, I highly recommend the Subs. BTW, Suboxone contains Naloxone to deter Heroin IV abuse/usage during your treatment -- doing so will send you straight into detox (and sick) mode. I use the Subutex because I do not have that desire or problem -- thank God! That's it for now.

FYI...... you will go into a horrible w/d from suboxone as well... just like methadone. It will take longer to happen (since its long acting), and the w/d will last a long time too. Trust me, I've been there!

Suboxone contains the active ingredient Buprenoprhine and is used to treat severe chronic pain as well as drug addiction.

If tapered properly, according to your doctors instructions, then the withdrawal effects for most people are very mild, which is why it has been a godsend for many people trying to beat drug addiction, as compared to Methadone, which usually results in most people taking a lifetime maintenance dose.

Most people who taper with Suboxone, end up completely drug free.

Some common side effects of this medication may include: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

I don't agree that the w/d will be mild.... I did a very slow taper. At the end, I was only taking 1/2 mg. and I am into day 15 of the w/d. I had 8 days of physical symptoms, which were the worst thing I've ever experienced. Now I am past that and just struggling with the mental aspect.....
