Is the k/56 pink pill the same as OxyContin? And do people abuse these after crushing them? If so, what are the effects and long term side effects?

I know someone who is supposed to be taking 6 oxycontin 30s a day. He doesn't have bone cancer, but has AIDS, not by his fault either. He had surgery many years ago, and the hospital gave him the wrong blood. Sad, but true. So there are many reasons someone would be prescribed that much medication. You have no right to judge anyone.

Pete Wheeler: your post is the only single post that actually explains why the method of ingestion of oxycodone (by snorting or injecting as opposed to oral intake) makes a difference and may be seriously problematic. I get frustrated reading the irresponsible and misinformation-filled posts which are plentiful here. So thanks for recognizing the need to provide accurate info in answer to this question. Some folks aren't capable of processing these fact-filled, accurate responses because they simply don't understand basic facts about physiology yet; and that is what is needed: accurate facts supplied in a non-judgmental way so one doesnt have to spend time cutting through CRAP while they try to increase their knowledge base and replace fallacy with fact. Appreciate your attempt to provide non-judgmental and accurate facts to this subject.

If you're a doctor, why can't you spell "automatically" correctly?

Matt,
The pills you are talking about are 10 mg, immediate-release, oxycodone tablets. It is stupid to snort them because the drug will not get into your system any faster by snorting the tablets. The same is true for cocaine or meth, neither of which anyone should be screwing with anyway since those things are not made professional chemists or by using analytical grade chemicals. Not only that, tablets often contain microcrystalline cellulose and silica as fillers. If fillers were not added, the tablets would be about the size of a pin head and the powder would not stick to itself. Both of the fillers I mentioned are substances one does not want in their lungs; especially the silica. Long-term exposure to silica can cause "silica pneumonia," a serious and usually fatal lung disease.
The reason snorting the tabs is useless is because both the oxycodone and cocaine are salts. Both of them happen to be the hydrochloride salt. (Morphine is usually made as the sulfate salt.) What this means is that, like coke, the drug is not absorbed through the mucous membranes. Opiates and coke belong to a group of naturally-occuring, or modified naturally-occuring, organic molecules called alkaloids. Alkaloids contain at least one relatively basic nitrogen atom which can accept a hydrogen ion from hydrochloric acid. Thus, the alkaloid is positively charged and the chlorine atom is negatively charged. ("Chloride" means a negatively-charged chlorine atom.)
Salts of alkaloids are not absorbed through a mucous membrane, which is what your sinus cavities and your gums and cheeks are. So if you did snort a crushed oxycodone tablet, a portion of it ends up in your lungs, but most of it just sticks to the walls of your sinuses, pharynx and throat. Because the salts are acids, they irritate whatever tissues they stick to, which causes the membranes to release mucous, or your mouth to release saliva, in an effort to flush the irritants off. Ultimately, you end up swallowing most of the tablet anyway. You will eventually cough up the powder, or the cilia action in your lungs will eventually sweep it out of your lungs. In either case you only end up swallowing the tablet.
The free base of most alkaloids can be absorbed through a mucous membrane. Nicotine is an alkaloid. Snuff tobacco like Scoal is actually fumigated with anhydrous ammonia to ensure that all of the nicotine is present as the free base so that it can be absorbed through your gums and cheek.
Finally, the tablets are not sterile. Anytime you snort something that's been handled by who knows how many people's dirty hands, you are risking a sinus infection and/or pneumonia.

Dear Privacy,
Imagine that you are hit head-on by a drunken driver such that you smash through the windshield and soar a good 20 ft. through the air before doing a power slide on your face on the rough road surface. You won't hurt right at first, but after about 30-60 sec., the pain will come on like you can't believe. You will not believe that it is possible to hurt that much.
When you get to the hospital, they will keep you from dying and they will run a full-body CAT scan. By this time, you would already be begging the staff to give you something for the pain, and you will be told that you cannot be given any opiates until a radiologist reads your CAT scan. Unfortunately the doc informs you of the severe concussion of your frontal cortex, therefore you cannot receive any opiate pain meds because opiates greatly facilitate swelling of the brain in patients with concussions. Concussions do not heal overnight, thus you will simply have to just suffer and tough it out for about a week sans any pain meds. Thoughts of suicide will enter your thoughts, that is if you can concentrate long enough to even think about anything except how badly you hurt. All the docs can do is give you a lot of diazepam to take the edge off your panic-inducing anxiety.
I hate when people like you preach their idea of "I'm right and you're an idiot" mentality. The only cure for people like you is a real wake-up call; an attitude adjustment. As blunt as this post is, I'm afraid that it is the only thing that will give you the wake-up call you need.
I don't wish you dead. I only want you to see what it feels like to hurt like you can't believe. Only then will obstinate people like you understand.

I am a Dr., an internist to be exact, and I own a pain-management clinic with my mail-order wife, who also earned her MD and completed her residency in neurology. I am eager to correct some misconceptions and errors, and to set the record straight on a few things I've read on this string of comments.
Regarding fillers: In tablets, one of the most common fillers is magnesium stearate, which is technically a soap, although it is useless as such because it is insoluble in water. It's nearly the same thing as the soap sodium stearate, which is water-soluble. When true soaps, as opposed to detergents, come in contact with a magnesium or calcium ion in hard water, the Mg(II) or Ca(II) ion displaces the sodium, creating a water-insoluble soap called "soap scum." Other water-soluble soaps commonly used are the Mg or Ca salts of palmitic, lauric, myristic and a few other saturated fatty acids. Mg(II) stearate is often used as a filler is because it is non-toxic, colorless, tasteless, odorless, and has a waxy consistency which allows it to be easily shaped. Because it is too soft at room temperature, other fillers are added such as talc, mannose, starch and titanium dioxide. None of those are toxic, and when present in the right pro-portions, they allow the tablet to be easily pressed into the desired shape and with the preferred hardness and brittleness so that they break up easily in the stomach.
Using any medication other than the way you are directed to use it is just plain stupid. In the case of opiates or opiate agonists like fentanyl, which is not an opiate since it is not a derivative of morphine nor does its chemical structure resemble morphine, injecting, smoking, chewing it or using it in any way other than what the directions say may result in DEATH! The fillers won't kill you. You could die because the abuser is receiving the prescribed dose over a much shorter time period and because it is not passing through the liver first. This is a good place to correct one commentator who said that taking a drug by IV is the fastest way to get it to the brain. Actually, inhaling a drug is the quickest way to get it to the brain.
Pills and tablets are not sterile. The most dangerous aspect of injecting a crushed tablet or the contents of a capsule is probably sepsis or an untreated abscess after the chance of an overdose. If one wishes to inject a tablet or capsule, the odds are the drug is not water soluble or only slightly so, thus unless the drug is a salt like codeine phosphate, it probably will not dissolve. Nevertheless, if someone is determined to inject a tablet or a capsule's contents, they should first wash their hands meticulously and dry them with a clean towel. {Edited for safety reasons}
I think that it's stupid to inject drugs, even prescription ones that aren't meant to be injected, but at least don't do it intravenously. At least clean the injection area on your butt with soap & water, dry, and rub on a little of the antibiotic ointment before injecting the drug.

how long does roxicontin the pink k56 take to get out of your system? I have only taken 2 a day for 3 days.

Was that all one sentence. For a doctor your grammar is horrible. Sentences start with a capital letter. However, I do agree with you on this topic.

Good for you! Some people don't realize how much PAIN someone can be in, especially after they have tried everything...every pill, every suggestion a doctor will make...everything. I was on 4 30mg roxis a day for extensive back and knee injuries and they were working great. I just had a car accident where I was almost killed. It is now my third month in a wheelchair due to my leg being broken in two places and an ankle that was so shattered that the surgeon had to basically sew it back on. The pain is absolutely inconceivable. I am only on the same amount of pain medicine, which is difficult if your tolerance is built up, so needless to say it is difficult to say the least. But the worst part of ALL of this, is the JUDGEMENT you get from people. Who do you think you are? We are not getting our meds free thru gov't assistance and selling them, nor are we using them illicitly. Until you walk a day (or in my case, WHEEL) don't judge people who have a legitimate injury or illness. Bravo to the post above. Bravo.

6 30mg of Oxycodin a day would seem extreme to the average person. Myself, having an inoperable tumor on my spine, come close to that on a daily basis. The human body builds up a tolerance to opiates. The longer someone is on an opiate, the higher the tolerance. Many people with a life time sentence of chronic pain will ultimately end up taking higher dosages the cancer patients in the final weeks if their life. Frequent blood/urine tests should be done to rule out liver and/or kidney damage.

I am prescribed to 9 30mg OxyCodone a day AND 9 10mg Methadone a day, as well as 3 10mg Valium and other things to control spasms.
I was in a car accident 5 years ago that broke my 6th and 7th Thoracic vertebrates and completely shattered my 8th Thoracic vertebrae. I am considered a T-6 Paraplegic.
I have developed chronic spasms in my legs and back, as well as a chronic pain disorder.
So, 6 30mg OxyCodone a day is NOT too much, and you NEVER know someone's situation, so no one is in any position to judge!!!!

Excellent answer! I am a nurse with chronic pain due to a bad accident years ago. I have had so many doctors refuse to treat me. I don't even need to be pain-free. A level 3 would allow me to have quality of life. I don't want a "high." I only want a low dose extended release opiod to be able to be active and functional in society. There is such a stigma against those who truly need to be on pain medication!

Amen brother. you're not an addict. I agree with you whole heartedly. i'm on 40mg of opana a day because i was hit by a car and can't walk like a normal person forever and people call me an addict. mines not nearly as bad as yours but they don't get it, sometimes you need narcotics to just take a piss. its a shame, but we are the victims here
