Sleep Aid Safe To Take With Metoprolol Er Succinate

Updated

I could not sleep the last two nights and wonder if there is a sleep aid safe to take with the metoprolol er succinate that I have been taking in the morning and evening, 25 mg pills. Been taking these b/p pills for months now.

Hello, Peg! How are you?

The main problem with them is that most sleep aids, such as Tylenol PM, Unisom and etc. use antihistamines, which may not always be safe for someone that has high blood pressure, because they can cause further elevations, according to the FDA. Thus, you should not take them, unless your doctor specifies that it is safe for you to do so. There may also be an issue if someone is overweight, since they may cause more weight gain.

I have high blood pressure, as well, and suffered full congestive heart failure several years ago, and given that I keep my blood pressure and weight under control, my doctor has cleared me for taking Benadryl and Allegra.

What have your recent blood pressure levels been? Are you on any other medications?

Research shows that it's the opposite of what you mentioned. When taken with the sleep aid discussed, it increases the level of Metoprolol, potentially causing BP levels which might be too low.

Metoprolol was lowering my blood pressure. I was on it for a very long time. I got vertigo when I was working and actually was out with vertigo and it was Metoprolol. I found out when I started reading about it online. I did not stop taking it until I talked to my Dr. He monitored me and now I don't take any more blood pressure meds. Good luck.
