Susan, you mentioned previously that you purchased a TENS machine...how did that work for you? Do you recommend it, or is it a waste of money?

You sound exactly like me.... bone broth, l-glutamine, top of the line probiotics all started a year ago and SO MUCH MORE, to heal what I thought was a leaky gut, went full auto immune paleo, for months. Looking back I really have no idea why I did it, never had any gut issues. Just read too much I guess and went 110% into cleaning my body. I did a parasite cleanse and then the candida cleanse which is what caused the UTI which is why I was prescribed the bactrim, the candida cleanse caused the UTI. I think all the info about previous vaccines as a kid, antibiotic use, etc. had me pretty scared into thinking I needed to "clean" my body, colon, organs, etc. Which I will say, all of it DOES for sure work, I am convinced of that. I am back to eating gluten, dairy and everything else bad for you, since all of this happened. I couldn't maintain the lifestyle, when I was in so much pain the last 4 months. I was buying grass fed marrow bones at Whole Foods for $12 each and making bone broth three times a week lol. I DO plan to get back to full paleo and juicing, soon. It's tough to sustain long term though, especially if you want any kind of social life. And this time, I will go at a MUCH slower pace. I sometimes wonder if that I had cleaned out my body so good, that when I took the bactrim that it put my system into shock thus the terrible reactions. I bought a $100 tens machine, and yes I think it did give me some relief. But not sure if it is really worth the money. I also bought an inversion table, the expensive Teeters one, thinking I originally had a back issue. I was desperate for anything to help me. So, I know what you are going through. I also did the Epsom salt baths, they helped, also soaking my feet in the salt. I am taking Tylenol PM every night to help me sleep because I think all of this has caused restless legs, can't get comfortable. It sucks for sure, but DOES get better, this company should be sued!

One other thing I forgot to mention, the itching I think is caused by the nerves coming back.

I am so sorry what you and your daughter went theough. I happy everything turned out ok. I just googled about this last night with worrying that's what will happen to my child. I'm praying it doesn't.
My daughter is currently expeiriencing a reaction to bactrim. Pediatrician walked in and said "this is bad." I lost it.
He gave her prednisone 3x a day with hopes it will stop it from coming.

I started on Bactrim 2x per day and within 24 hrs developed periodic severe headaches, chills, and neck/muscle soreness. Stopped taking it today and will be calling my primary care doctor in the morning in an attempt to resolve. Should have paid attention to what my body was telling me!

Matt, Yes, immediately stop taking it if you notice anything out of the ordinary for you. This drug has some very bad and unpredictable side effects. Hopefully they reverse quickly. It's good that you listened to what your body was telling you.

Hi Susan. Yes, it does sound like we have a very similar approach to nutrition. I like to joke that im 70% paleo 100% of the time. The gut has definitely come back but now the fatigue and lack of endurance is my greatest concern. I used to have so much energy and now i have to pace myself and spread my tasks out. Also, im having difficulty sleeping now again. It sucks when your eyes are closed and your tired but cant sleep. This restless leg syndrome you have - how do you describe it? I think i may have something similar now too where i feel like my legs just cant get comfortable. The itching and minor aches and pains are part of it too. Also im noticing more joint pain and tightness in certain muscles.
An interesting side note. I switched doctors and had my first visit with her and she noticed that I never had my TSH levels tested which I finally did yesterday and still waiting for the results. That prompted me to look at my history of TSH levels from 4 years back. Sure enough there has been a clear decline by about a point every year. in 2014 it was about 4.4 mIU/L and last year the same time it was 1.9. This could be the smoking gun. Although low thyroid has its own challenges. If it did drop below normal levels i suspect stress from issues i've been dealing with these last few years being a factor. I don't know this is all new territory for me and I will have to wait for my results and what the doctor says.

Hello Kurt, how are you feeling now? Any lingering pains specifically neck or joint pains? I've had a low grade ache I'm my right hand and sometimes my neck lately. Constipation has ceased.

Hi Wayne. Turns out my thyroid is normal. I had TSH, T3/T4 Free/Total and all normal. I pretty much ran out of options with my conventional doctor. Even though my new doctor is much more progressive, open to more naturopathic therapies than the others i've had, she still didn't have any suggestions. At the moment I am trying Chinese medicine doctor/acupuncturist who takes a functional medicine approach as well. She is going to run some other tests that the conventional medicine doctors did not run. I'll try that for a bit and see how that goes.
As far as my symptoms - most of them are still there but fluctuate on and off. I feel like something is changing I just don't know if its for better or worse. Im definitely sleeping really well now. I had constipation again last week but that seems to be back to normal again. I'm on some naturopathic supplements which are supposed to benefit my male hormones and hypothalamic functions which seem to be helping. I tried taking the free form CoQ10 (ubiquinol) but that made me feel really bad with heart palpitations and shortness of breath so i stopped. The funny thing is that i feel like i have more energy now after a few days off the CoQ10 so maybe it did something. I went for a really fast hike up a local mounting this evening and i felt like I was on fire and still feel good an hour later which is a good sign. Still a little bit of dizziness and strange nerve/muscle sensations but currently not fatigued at all. Who knows how I will feel an hour from now though. I feel like my body is possessed with something and its trying to find some new balance. Regarding painful joints - not painful just stiff and arthritic which is now just isolated to my one finger and my right elbow a little. Joints in my hands feel tight, especially my wrists and knuckles. I did have a stiff neck way in the beginning but I went to the chiropractor and said my Atlas was way off and he corrected it. I haven't had any neck pain since. Really I don't have much pain its just numb muscles and rubbery feeling. For instance when you dig into your muscle with your finger you should feel pain, like a massage kinda hurt - i have to go really hard to feel some pain. Or if i pinch myself, i used to feel pain when with just a bit of pressure, now i have to pinch really hard for it to hurt. What else....another strange thing is my fast twitch fine motor muscles (fingers, wrists, ankles) seem to fatigue really quick to the point where I cant move them.. but if i exercise them to failure and then give them rest they come back to normal.
Also there is this strange tightness in my jaw and my gums feel numb too. My lips and forehead and scalp all feel weirdly numb and tight but that has seemed to improve a bit. I'm still hoping that in time this will resolve itself. Gotta keep living and enjoy life. Im dealing with depression too, as some others have also posted. I sometimes wonder if the Bactrim threw off my brain chemistry or maybe this is all due to some form of PTSD. I was under a lot of stress for a long time when I took the Bactrim, so maybe along with my genetic makeup it was all a perfect storm. The bottom line is this stuff is nasty - don't take antibiotics unless you are on your deathbed or your feeling REALLY lucky. I just wish i could go back in time and have a doover. Taking Bactrim DS was hands down the worst mistake of my life.

Thanks Kurt, and I to wish I would have considered other means outside of Bactrim. My body chemistry has been all off. I do get slight aches in my hands some numbness in my left leg. Some days I feel great others not. I'll keep fighting the good fight though and will keep you posted.

Hi Wayne (and Susan). How have you been recovering? any progress?

My son was prescribed Bactrim ds for MILD acne that had responded well to multiple antibiotics (the dermatologist said he changes antibiotics every 3 months to prevent resistance -- I've come to learn this is an outdated methodology). My son took his first dose on Jan 10, 2017 and came home sick on Feb. 2, 2017. Immediately stopped the Bactrim, he was hospitalized and in ICU for a week with DRESS syndrome (as systemic drug reaction that occurs with Bactrim and anti-convulsant meds). It is now April 21, 2017 and he is still sick. He's had to take high doses of steroids for months and now he has a rash all over his body and his hair is falling out. I've been told I can't sue the dr. who prescribed because it was a drug reaction. This makes no sense when every dermatologist I talk to tells me it should never have been prescribed for his condition. So sad for my poor 15 year old boy who missed 4 weeks of school and has been through so much with no end in sight!

I have had a rough couple of weeks seems like 2 steps forward, 1 step back with recovery :(

I'm in the same boat. One step forward two steps back seems to be the best way to describe it . Things just feel so weird and difficult to describe. The fatigue has been lessening but the diminishment of sensation is the most bothersome and the nervous system is even showing signs that it's affecting my motor nerves and muscles. I'm starting to wonder if it is some kind of mitochondrial dysfunction that I'm dealing with. But that is very difficult and expensive to diagnose and in the end what I really get out of knowing. So frustrating.

You may require a course of Prednisone and also Benadryl may offer you some relief.
