I need to know of any side effects that may occur while taking this medication.

I agree. I have never had a problem with antibiotics before but I had to stop taking this after two days. I developed hives, headaches, sore throat and extreme nervousness and insomnia. From the stories I've read since, I'm glad I quit when I did. And why is anyone prescribing this, especially without disclosing the side effects. Someone needs to start a petition, if there isn't one already.

That happened to me. I stopped taking it on the eighth day and had two days left..I broke out into severe hives..now I'm on prednisone for the hives.

I was put in the hospital, crazy low blood pressure, throwing up, flu like symptoms, awful rash, headache. STAY AWAY. Worst experience of my life

Why does FDA approve his drug composition? I had fevers for two days on day 6-7 and broke out in a rash all over my body on day 8. Also have dry lips and not sure if it's due to bactrim.

It starts on the upper arms and tummy and basically moved down. My ears remain extremely itchy. I'm stunned doctors would use this knowing the side effects.

I cut my leg at the gym and it ended up getting infected with staph. My doctor put me on Bactrim for 2 weeks. No side effects that I know of. However, the infection returned even worse. He put me back on Bactrim for another 4 weeks. Still no side effects like the ones I'm seeing here. But then, after about 2 weeks of the second round, hives appeared. They are on my throat, neck, upper chest and oddly on my wrist. I'm not allergic to sulfa drugs so I think that probably cut out a lot of the side effects...but I'm going to try Benedryl now to see if I can get rid of these annoying red, itchy, scaly patches. Thanks for the advice. I had an old tube of ciclopriox and have been putting that on them but it just makes them more shiny...so that didn't work. best of luck to you all.

I read the posts concerning Bactrim. I took it over a period of ten days, two tablets per day. During that period, I developed a rash on my tongue and my cheeks, gum and tongue were sensitive and sore. Even my teeth felt odd. My forearms and hands were weak and I had no idea what was going on until I finished the prescription.
Then I decided to take a good look at my tongue and was shocked to see the long, red rash - I thought it was a result of biting it. I now know it was an adverse reaction to Bactrim. I no longer have any pills left and wonder long these side effects will last

How long did your side effects end up lasting? I got on Bactrim 8 days ago for 5 days (2x a day) and about 12 hours after I had finished my last dose I broke out in hives all over my body (but not on my face or mouth) and a fever. That was around 2 am on Saturday night. I took benedryl before I went to bed and my rash had improved when I woke up, but I was still feverish, bright red, itchy, and rashy. My eyes were also very swollen. I took aleve and claritin, which helped with the hives and fever, and slept all day, and then took 2 more benedryl and slept all night. The next day my eyes were still puffy and I didn't have hives and was bright red. I was now super itchy. I went to urgent care (this was during mardi gras) and got a steroid shot and a prescription to presnisone, which has helped a ton! I wish I went as soon as the symptoms didn't go away after 1 benedryl. Its now Tuesday and I am still very itchy and very red, and am taking my daily dose of presnisones. How long did the symptoms subside for everyone else. I still don't feel that great- a little shakey, tired, and my skin gets really hot.

You said that you had insomnia and anxiety, I too have those symptoms. I would like to know how long it took for those side effects to go away.

For me, it took about 2-3 days. I did take benadryl right away too, so I think that helped.

Just want to give a quick update on my progress. It is currently day 4 off of the Bactrim DS after taking 2 doses in 1 day. I was having pretty strong anxiety and today it feels slightly better. I also have been having insomnia for the past 3 nights. I'm taking melatonin and Benadryl to try to help put me to sleep. That worked the first two nights but last night I didn't sleep at all. I hope that these two side effects start to lessen soon as being this tired is causing additional problems with memory and happiness. I've noticed that most people don't update their reviews on these sites ever and I hope its because they have completely recovered and just want to forget this ever happened, but if anyone reading this has recovered or feels much better or worse over a period of time, please share that with everyone as it is peace of mind for people to see an end to their suffering or at least know that they are not alone. People who recovered years ago passing words on to those whos side effects just started. Anyways I will check in here again soon. I hope next time with better news, but if not we'll still make it in due time. God bless all of you suffering out there. Pray, for yourself and all of the rest of us out here! Thanks.

I had my reaction almost two years ago. I still have a little issue with the redness when I get too warm and also when I get upset. It's not as extreme as when it first happened bury it's still there.

I am just stopped taking the Bactrim today even though I still had 6 days left. I woke up last night with reflux and then ended up vomiting and diarrhea. I could not lay down without the reflux coming up. I have been super hot, shaky and weak. I called my dr and she told me to stop the Bactrim and eat yogurt to restore the balance of bacteria in my stomach. Hope it goes away soon!!

I was on Bactrim for a UTI. 10 day dosage. On day 2, I was getting a headache and fatigued. On day 3, I got a sore throat. I thought I was catching a cold or flu. My UTI cleared up, but I kept feeling worse. On day 6 I was having nausea/lack of appetite. On day 8 I got a fever of 101 degrees, uncontrollable chills, and a few red spots on my hands.

On day 9 I had hives over my entire body. I immediately went to urgent care and they told me to stop taking it, gave me a steroid shot, and prescribed prednisone for 5 days. They told me to take Zyrtec if I needed it. My rash got incredibly itchy and red, and was still spreading even after the steroids. Basically had to suffer through it. It has been 15 days since then, and the rash is fading, but still isn't quite gone. It also flares up every once in a while.

Coming off prednisone also gave me an incredible acne breakout on my face/neck/back that is only just clearing up. I feel closer to normal, but still not 100%. Be careful with Bactrim and anything your doctors give you for a negative reaction...

Well it has been a total of 18 days since I took my last dose of Bactrim, and I only too 2 pills. My side effects have been anxiety, depression and INSOMNIA. The anxiety and depression seemed to pass about 8 or 9 days ago. The insomnia however has not let up at ALL. I take 25mg Benadryl and 2.5mg melatonin every night and that'll get me around 3 or 4 hours of sleep then I'll wake up for a little while and maybe get 1 more hour. I keep reading everywhere that this should let up in 3 to 4 weeks but after 18 days of this every single night I'm not sure. I guess I just need to be happy that I get any sleep and that the anxiety and depression are gone. I truly hope I can serve as a success story on here soon, but for now I'm going to keep waiting and praying for a good nights sleep.

I was prescribed a 14 day course of Bactrim 500mg 2x a day for a UTI. I felt fine, up until about day 5 when I got several painful sores in my mouth that I assumed were due to natural bacteria being killed off. Then it went to a sore throat, not horrible but there and let me know on each swallow. Day 11 I wake up and I am itching all over my body. I go look and see that I have hives everywhere. I went back to the Dr and he told me get off the Bactrim never take it again. He prescribed me some prednisone for a week , im on the 2nd day now and I dont feel it has helped , as I am still getting new hives. Im also taking vistaril for the itching , which it does an ok job of relieving symptoms of, but not great. Guess in the end we will see how long this takes.

I had the exact same problem! The muscle pain was so bad that when I tried to take a shower I couldn't stand so I sat down. Then the pain was so bad I couldn't stand up on my own. Went to the doctor twice and both times they said it wasn't the medication. I took one pill about a week and a half apart and had the same reaction each time. It was horrible and I don't think I'll ever take it again!

I had horrible pain all over my body for about two and a half months. This was after having taken 9 days of Bactrim. I could hardly walk, turn over, or move without severe discomfort. My CRP level was elevated throughout this time and indicated an inflammatory state. I was only on the Bactrim because of a possible small infectious area on my toe.

This is in addition to symptoms I've listed in the past. After a year of struggling with my lips cracking and swelling, and wondering why my vitamin b levels dropped to the point of needing injections. I found out that developing a dificency in vitamin b12 can happen after taking Bactrim. Which can cause nervous system damage if not caught soon enough.
Seriously this stuff is poison.
