Savella Is Bad News.

Updated

I suffer from fibromyalgia (for years) amungst other muscle and joint diseases, and have always taken Lyrica, which has greatly helped. Last week I saw a specialist and he decided to keep me on the Lyrica but added Savella. He said it was new and approved for fibro. What he did NOT tell me was that it is an anti depressant. I cant take anti depressants because every single one of them causes ab adverse reaction in me. After 3 days of being on Savella, I began to feel like I was getting the flu. When I woke up on day 4 I thought I had the flu for sure, but later that day, after taking my morning dose of the starter pack, I noticed blood in my underwear, which was weird because I no longer have a uterus to bleed from. (partial hystorectomy, still have my ovarys but thats it) The blood was also toward the back of my undies, not the front...so I wiped back there and there was bright red blood on the tissue. Ive never, not ever had a hemeroid or any bleeding from there, so I was reasonably shook up. A few hours later, my gut was getting sharp pinching, stabbing pains that started at the top of my abdomen and radiated down in waves to my lower abdomen and shock like pains in my back. I felt feverish and nausiated and by this point hadnt slept other than dosing off here and there since I started the triation pack. Them I had to poo. (sorry for the TMI but its relevent) I looked in the toilet and it was FULL of blood along with black stool. As my specialist was to busy to talk to me and doesnt like to call people back, (i was told by the receptionist he said its nit the Savella doing it, keep taking it) I called my regukar doc and was told to get to an urgent care, if not the ER. So I went to urgent care, they said I needed to be ambulanced to the ER, as by this point I could hardly walk and was so lethargic, driving myself would be against medical advice. Once at the ER I underwent a CT scan of my abdomen, and aside from the rectal bleeding, I also developed colitis. I now have to see my pcp tomorrow so she can set up a colonoscopy with a gastro specialist. Again I tried calling the doc that put me on Savella in the first place, and again couldnt be bothered to call me back. I got a call this morning from the same receptionist. I told her to tell him to take this med and shove it somewhere because I refuse to take it. On top of not sleeping fot 5 days, not eating, I have to deal with feeling like I have a fever(even though I dont) and rectal bleeding and colitis? I dont think so. I hope by taking this medicine I have not done something irriversable to my system. If you are on Savella and it helps you, thats great. If youre just starting out and notice any feelings of something not being right, I very highly suggest you stop taking it and tell your doc. You will have a day or 2 where you feel off but otherwise ok, but thats where I made my mistake. I kept taking it because the man with the paper on his wall stating he went to school and is smarter than me when it comes to medicine knows best, but after 6 days, im done. And im pissed off. Since getting sick ive read a lot about savella and read alot from people whove taken it. The vast majority have nothing good to say about,it. It wouls seem that maybe 2 out of 10 handle Savella ok wbile the others had major side effects. I wouldnt recomend Savella to my worst enemy. ~NM~

Wow! I am so sorry that you went through this, have suffered and been so scared.

As a fellow woman who has also had bad reactions to some medications, I completely understand. I've definitely learned to trust myself and what my body is telling me, the last time I didn't, I had a very bad reaction to an antibiotic, though the doctor in the ER tried to tell me it wasn't anything to worry about and I ended up miserable for well over a month, before it cleared it up.

Learn more Savella details here.

No one can make you take any medication, so if isn't life sustaining and you don't feel right on it, or aren't sure about it taking it, then just don't.

And yes, Savella is approved to treat Fibro, but it is an SNRI, so it works on the same receptors that antidepressants do.

I really hope you've suffered no permanent damage and will have a quick and complete recovery.

Can you post back and let me know how you're doing?

Thanks. Ive since told the doc, well, his receptionist because he cant seem to be bothered, to take the savella and shove it. Im still having cramping and pain in the top part of my abdomen, but after a day of not taking it, literaly 24 hours, the bleeding stopped and my gutbhas slowly stopped hurting so badly. And I know what you mean about antibiotics. I had a kidney infection and almost died cause I thought it was just the flu and let it go for so long...ended up hospitalized for a week, at first they gsve me some IV cillin antibiotic...i watched my arm as the bumps came and itched and even though its clear in my chart that im deathly allergic to all cillin drugs, they still gave it to me. Ibcalled the nurse in, she stopped the drip, called the doc. He says oops and gives me something that wont kill me....i wonder where some of these docs get their degrees from. I know more about my diseases than they do, concidering how long ive dealt with it. But dog forbid you tell them how to treat you, cause then youre being difficult and abusive. Its like you have to kiss their ass for them to treat you. Im so sick of it. Good luck with yourself. Hope all is well. Well as can be anuway. :) ~NM~

Savella and lyrica, should not be taken together. You should look up drug interactions.
