Safer Antidepressants To Use During Pregnancy
UpdatedHi, I hope someone can help me. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder three years ago, although second and third opinions suggested possible bipolar 2 (family history) and postnatal depression (possibly hereditary because my sister also has it). Anxiety was a definite finding.
I was put on Fluoxetine (Ranflocs), which worked until I decided to stop. when things got worse again, I used Serlife, and then Cilift. Eventually went back to Ranflocs, and there was a moderate improvement in mood swings.
After three months, however, I discovered that I was (still am) pregnant. I stopped on the advice of my GP. However, anxiety got really bad, depression set in for two weeks, and I had an anxiety attack, as well as a low immunity (tummy bug and flu after each other).
Saw a psychiatrist yesterday, and was advised to start a course of Lexamil. I am terribly hesitant to start because I do not want to lose this baby (9 weeks). I am however just as afraid of having a nervous break down if I don't go on medication. That is how bad I feel. I become anxious within a few seconds, then aggressive/irritable, and feel totally out of my depth. I am aware too that untreated depression can have adverse effects on the baby.
Also, I have been put off from work for the next month, due to the aggravation of my occupation on my condition. If I am to be granted this leave by personnel, I have to be on medication.
I AM STUCK. I know no one on this forum can make a decision for me, but I'd prefer to make an informed decision, with your help.
I asked the psychiatrist about it, and he said that it's all basically supposition. Testing has not been conducted on human beings, and so all results of animal testing in relation to humans are supposed. He also said that there are women who do miscarry whilst on anti-depressants, and then go on to have healthy babies too, but there are some who do not have any of the supposed side-effects.
What I'd like to know is what are the definite stats regarding anti-depressants and pregnancy? I have a healthy toddler, and had a significantly easy pregnancy with him, but does that mean anything in light of my concern? And, is there a safer antidepressant to use?
Please, help.

Usually you are or can start meds after the first trimester. Unless that has changed b/c of the risk of miscarriage. I'm so sorry to hear you are in a rock and hard place. And I can tell you want to do what's right for your baby. I would recommend looking into a Holistic Doc. You should just be able to google that and there will be docs and stores around that can put you on something that will not harm the baby but also give you back your life. All natural meds are very important with or without being pregnant. I take a lot of supplements to help with many different things and they have really helped. I hope this helps, I know I didn't give you exactly what you wanted to hear. But I do truly believe a Holistic Doc could really help in your situation. Best of luck to you and your baby. And btw, congrats!
