Hi suezie,

Certain "inactive" ingredients that may or may not be present in each brand, are actually detrimental to how the drug is metabolized and used by your body. Because everyone is different, your body may agree with one medication over the other, due to how you feel or based on whatever side effects present themselves.

When you switch brand names, the drug itself doesn't change, but rather the ingredients or fillers that they put with it.

The Inactive Ingredients found in 48 12 V are:
lactose monohydrate
magnesium stearate
microcrystalline cellulose
povidone
sodium starch glycolate type A potato
stearic acid
FD&C Blue No. 1

If you know the imprint of your previous oxycodone pill, I can do a comparison of inactive ingredients, so you can see which ingredients or fillers are effecting your absorption of the drug.

I hope this helps!

Oh my goodness.... I am so glad to find this thread as I thought I was crazy. I have 15 and 30 mg but the 30 are proving a bit too strong, that being said; The 15s I was taking before were Mallinckrodt and 1 & 1/2 were doing the job. My pharmacist filled my last script with Qualitest and I have been so sick to my stomach and not getting relief from the pain (from major thoracotomy and lobectomy and intercostal nerve damage). I do have Celieac and in researching gluten free oxycodone the only manufactures they list as definite gluten free are Mallinckrodt and Watson. I will be requesting one of those at CVS with my next script. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Hi David, I posted a reply above and any info you could give me would be most appreciated! I am hoping my pharmacy can order the other brand for me for as long as I need to take these. I'll look forward to hearing your reply. Thanks so much!

Wow...Glad to hear I'm not alone on this!

The difference in strength/quality was enough to make me file a report with the FDA, though. I suggest everyone who experiences similar should do the same...

Hi Katherine. What were your symptoms when you took it? Did you have problems getting your pharmacy to order a different manufacturer?....and lastly; how did you file a report? Thanks!

Hi KTNala,

Yeah, I had a hell of a time trying to get my pharmacy (not quite a Mom & Pop shop--but not a national chain either) to order a different brand. Ultimately ended up switching pharrmacies after several miserable months.

I don't recall any particular symptoms other than noticeably inadequate pain relief at doses that worked just days earlier. N.B. when I switched to a different generic at the same strength, the effectiveness returned.

Hmm, it appears the FDA has removed (or just moved) the "Bad Drug" report page that had all the info needed in one spot. I suggest looking here:
fda.gov/Safety/ReportaProblem/ConsumerComplaintCoordinators/default.htm
and calling your local FDA coordinator. I ended up getting lab tests that backed up my hypothesis!

Cheers,

Katherine

Hi KTNala,

My apologies for the late reply. I'm really glad my post could be of help to you though!

I do wish more pharmacies would list the inactive ingredients on the label as well as the name of the drug. It would solve a lot of issues like these, where patients don't know why something just isn't working like the other brand they had did.

I think what you intend on doing is the best approach - requesting gluten free brands from the pharmacy. Gluten intolerance/Celieac shouldn't be taken lightly, so they will have to address your concern or have your doctor make note of it on the script for future reference.

For reference, I posted below the inactive ingredients in a few different oxycodone tablets from various manufacturers:

Inactive Ingredients of 30mg Oxycodone from Actavis:
corn starch
FD&C Blue No. 2 Aluminium Lake
FD&C Blue No. 2
lactose monohydrate
microcrystalline cellulose
silicon dioxide
glycolate
stearic acid

Inactive Ingredients of 15mg Oxycodone from Qualitest Pharmaceuticals Inc.:
lactose monohydrate
magnesium stearate
microcrystalline cellulose
povidone
sodium starch glycolate type A potato
stearic acid
FD&C Blue No. 1
D&C Yellow No. 10

Inactive Ingredients of 5mg Oxycodone from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals:
ferrosoferric oxide
gelatin
lactose
ferric oxide red
silicon dioxide
stearic acid
titanium dioxide
ferric oxide yellow

There are other brands too with different ingredients listed. But I hope this helps shed some light on what they put in these pills.

I have celiac disease and have also become -- I don't know whether to say sensitive to or allergic to or what -- allergic to corn and corn products. And corn does the same thing to me that wheat gluten does -- starts out with gas, then bloating and diarrhea and bad absorption. Now I am having troubles with both prescription and OTC medications causing the same problems, and I have started to tremble again. Trembling is something that eventually happens to me when I stop absorbing food well, I guess. Seems to be a deficiency-caused thing.

I take oxycodone and Oxycontin, labetalol and a diuretic, and OTC black cohosh for hot flashes. I have found a provider of corn-free black cohosh, but have no idea what to do about my prescription meds. I think magnesium stearate is often derived from corn, as well as stearic acid, and of course corn starch. What do I do?

who makes oxycodone 5mg lactose free, I am highly allergic to the protein in milk and my doctors office is leaving it up to me to find a pharmacy that has oxycodone 5mg lactose free and I haven't been able to find anyone, and am having severe health problems from the lactose entering my body.

This helps me. It seems the Mal... (whatever) might be pretty good for me. Not the one with corn starch! And I was apparently wrong about the magnesium stearate being often made from corn. However, the other thing -- stearic acid? -- might be. I have to check.

I need to get some corn- and gluten-free NSAIDS, for my arthritis. But have to find an MD who will say I need this. Any ideas/recommendations on precisely what type of doctor would be willing to say, yes, she needs her meds without corn? A regular immunologist/allergy doc?

Many thanks,

Ellen

ooo me too! certain ones make me sick and dizzy and make my pain worse, or my eyes strain and it get's worse with certain foods I consume, diet and the ingredients, and so because Hawaii or someone knows this, they jack up the prices on the brands I always use, it part of a "Hawaii" conspiracy I think. being I have been harassed in this state for 20 some what years and no attorney replies my emails or letters. trust me I'm not a hallucinating drug addict. I take 5 miili g's a day, little more or less, same thing past 10 years, no reason for a DEA raid, right? anyways our country is screwed by the law enforcement and the president can't keep tabs on them.
