Propylene Glycol In Prescription Drugs

Updated

my wife is allergic to propylene glycol and it is in many
products - oral otc's,foods, creams, ointments, lotions, soaps shaving cream etc. We have eliminated most of the over the counters but am looking for a list of prescription items that would have propylene glycol in them. Does anyone have the site for such a list?

I found it difficult to locate a complete list, but according to Google, listed below are the "Top Medications Containing Propylene Glycol":

*Acetaminophen and Oxycodone Hydrochloride 500 mg / 5 mg (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA)
*Amoxicillin 500 mg (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA)
*Cephalexin Monohydrate 500 mg (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA)
*Concerta 36 mg (ALZA Corporation)
*Concerta 54 mg (ALZA Corporation)
*Concerta 18 mg (ALZA Corporation)
*Fluoxetine Hydrochloride 20 mg (Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Inc.)
*Hydroxyzine Pamoate 25 mg (Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Inc.)
*Hydroxyzine Pamoate 25 mg (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA)
*Hydroxyzine Pamoate 50 mg (Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Inc.)
*Hydroxyzine Pamoate 50 mg (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA)
*Indomethacin 50 mg (Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc.)
*Indomethacin 25 mg (Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc.)
*Lyrica 75 mg (Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals Group)
*Lyrica 50 mg (Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals Group)
*Lyrica 150 mg (Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals Group)
*Temazepam 30 mg (Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc.)

There's also a PDF file which has a list of various items, including some topical Rx medications here:
allergeaze.com/PDFs/NA/NA55.PDF

Another webpage stated that, "Propylene glycol is commonly used as a drug solubilizer in topical, oral, and injectable medications." - so my guess is there's probably a much bigger list out there that isn't very easy to obtain.

I hope this helps!

Sorry to hear that your wife is suffering through the same allergic reaction to propylene glycol as I am. I find it quite frustrating and difficult to easily obtain the ingredients of any given product since PG has so many different names. From what I have learned, when one is allergic to PG, one may be allergic to a family of chemicals. Here are the websites that I frequent to reference and also use to help me in finding products without PG.

goodguide.com/ingredients/37423-propylene-glycol

glycolallergy.com/Advice/tabid/63/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/1/Other-Names-For-Propylene-Glycol.aspx

I find that reading the ingredients label is just not enough. I have found products that do not list PG in the ingredient list, but upon visiting the company website, PG is listed as an ingredient on their website. I believe that I read somewhere that companies are not required to list PG for OTC products. PG is pretty much in everything. So be careful and do your homework. Good luck!
