Prolia After Aclasta

Updated

I had Aclasta infusion in September 2012 followed by severe side effects - chest and rib pain, joint pain, high fever. Specialist now wants me to have Prolia, due now. Having read all the posts about the side effects I'm very wary about taking it. Anyone else in this situation?

Hello, Sheila! How are you feeling? Sorry about the bad reaction you had to the Aclasta.

Not only have others been in that situation, but many of them have stopped Prolia or refused to start it.

I understand why doctors are concerned and want to advocate the use of these types of mediations, but I have to wonder if it's really necessary in many cases. I'm really starting to think that more women should get a second opinion, before resorting to these drugs.

Most of them, including the Prolia, are also used to treat some types of cancer, which likely explains the pretty nasty side effects they can cause in many women.

Learn more Prolia details here.

I'm not a doctor, so I'm not trying to tell you that you should or shouldn't do it. But I am being honest and saying that I think you should look into a little more, before you make your decision.

Does anyone else have any experiences to add?

I have not had Alcasta but have been on Prolia for the past 3 years. Previous to Prolia I had taken alendronate with no success. within 2 years of Prolia and a weight bearing exercise regime I have successfully come from osteoporosis back into the osteopenia range - definetly heading in the right direction. I have no side effects that I could comment on. My success with Prolia was not expected for 5 years however doctors were thrilled to see the quick turn around after 2. Good luck to you!

I was on Aclasta for seven years. I had to have oral surgery. My jaw wouldn't heal. When I told the surgeon I was on Aclasta he told me my jaw was deteriorating and he had to remove part of my jaw. I'm on Prolia and I'm considering going off it. I'm going to talk to my doctor. It is very frightening. Think twice about taking these medications. I'm 72 and have osteoporosis but these side effects scare the heck out of me.
