Pregnant-taking Methadone, Clonidine, And Lamictal

My daughter is 6 months pregnant. She is taking 80 mg of methadone a day through a local clinic while recovering from a H addiction. She also takes clonidine for tourette tics. I have noticed that her tics are worse than ever and realized it may be due to the lamictal. The lamictal is for her anxiety and possible bi polar. She stopped the lamictal cold turkey a few days ago. I am worried about that and the side effects that could cause to her and the baby. I had wanted to talk to the doctor before hand. She is 24 and impossible to communicate with. She recently moved back home (an out and back in and still cussing and fussing-etc)... We put up with the behavior for the baby and our 3 year old granddaughters safety. I also realize my daughter is sick and desperately want to help her. My youngest son has severe social anxiety and his doctor recently prescribed Buspar for him. After all these years all of the symptoms that the med is said to control it sounds like it is a God-sent. (For myself as well) My question is: Can a pregnant woman on methadone take Buspar? Or what else would be safe for her to request?

Yes, she could take Buspar while pregnant and on the Methadone, if her doctor approves. It couldn't hurt to ask, because yes, the Lamictal has been known to cause or worsen tics.

The side effects from Buspar may include nausea, dizziness and weight changes.

Thank you. The past few days have been pretty good. I am amazed as to how much her tics have subsided. I am livid that a doctor would put her on the Lamictal knowing the side effects and especially since she was already being treated for tics. She is on a high dose of Clonidine for the tics, which I hope she can taper as well. She and I had a good conversation today about her meds. I really would like to go with her to see her clinic doctor. I would also like for her to see a neurologist. There were times she appeared to be having mini seizures. That seems to have subsided as well. But she 'needs' me up until I have an opinion that differs from hers, so it is a slow process.

Not only will that baby go though hell when born...it will have long term problems....shame on her.

Don't be ignorant! I'm a methadone patient and also in the medical field. The baby could have neonatal abstinence syndrome which is withdrawal of a medication the mother was on. Ironically my baby did not withdraw from methadone but amitriptyline which is used for migraines. I told the doc every appt the meds and not one time did they acknowledge the fact I kept saying I was on it; and wasn't on my chart and they will wean the baby down off the methadone IF the baby even withdrawals - only 60% of babies do. But if it does they make them comfortable and do it slow and steady. So NO, the baby DOESN'T go thru hell. So learn and educate before you discriminate and btw I know two cops, three medics and several nurses on methadone clinics due to long term use of pain meds from surgery or an accident at work. So learn, don't put people down for trying to do the right thing. Would u rather she be on illicit drugs, cuz that's the worst for it and NOPE, no long term effects on the baby from methadone. Read up - addiction doesn't discriminate.
