Please Help - I'm Falling And Don't See Any Help In My Future

Updated

I'm a 50 yr old grandma with end stage renal failure! With that being said I also have chronic pain, slipped disc, a bulging disc, neuropathy, severe nerve damage in my neck and down my shoulder, severe hip pain in not just one but both hips now. I have been on pain meds for about 15 yrs....And always feel like I'm being judged every time I walk in the doctor's office! I figured I would change docs and started with a new clinic. The first few months was ok I guess...Then whammmy, he said I'm discharging you at this time because you came back with a positive drug panel for "6 mam" which I have learned is heroin! I have not ever seen nor do I have a desire to see it or do it!!! But now I am without a doc and my meds have run out. I stretched what I had for as long as I could! Now I'm kinda freaking out! I'm in severe pain, I'm a damn basket case (crying at the drop of a hat) just really depressed and lost! I'm always in pain anyway but my medicine made it easier for me to deal with it! I dont know what to do and need help fast!!!!

It may be that an individual doctor is reluctant to deal with you because of professional liability or potential legal exposure. My thought would be to send a clear statement to one or several of your local medical groups laying out your physical/medical situation, with a copy to your state and federal political reps. Your situation is clearly distinguishable from that of a junkie. One would think that neither the profession or the government can just turn their backs on you. My best wishes.

Thanks to the pillbillies we that are in severe pain can not get any relief. I suffer from RSD which has no cure the docs just have to manage the pain with meds. It is getting harder and harder to find a doc to prescribe meds. Some days I hurt so bad I just want to end it all. Thank you politicians for screwing up my life in order to protect the heroin addicts.

I'm sorry for what you're going through! A couple of questions: Did you challenge this doc's statement re. Your alleged heroin use? Did he perform a second test? The possibility of a false positive is high. In any case, you need to get a hold of your medical records from this guys office. You're entitled to them - they're your records. See what he documented. I believe there is also a way to check a lab's records as regards their accuracy rate. Get some documentation to back yourself up and go see another doctor. Don't give up on this! Hang in and stay tough!

have you thought of medical marijuana? might help. I think I would go back to that clinic and ask for a redo on the panel that said heroin was in your system. It is most likely a mistake. Your local paper might find a story in that. good luck to you. I have many of your problems without the renal failure and just wish the best for you. I also suggest walking. any time spent doing that will definitely help you to feel better. get out of the house and try a walk around the block.

I too have RSD. I also deal with osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and sjogrens. It's so difficult to express to others what RSD Pain feels like. The closest that I come is to say that I feel like someone peeled my skin off, leaving every nerve exposed. Even wind from a ceiling fan is more than I can take on my feet and legs. Then for good measure it feels like someone hit me with an electric cattle prod. Then there's the fatigue and inability to concentrate or sleep.

I am a 70 year old grandma. Here's what I suggest. Re-think what you're going to do about your problems. In my case, I discovered my problems couldn't be addressed and solved until I knew what they were. I could only begin to find the answers to what was going on - in the whole, not the specific part, of whatever was most horrible about my problems. We want to solve our problems, not relieve the symptoms. Go to a more creative medical problem-solver. The kind that look at the whole of you and helps you according to you. Individualized medicine.

And i called about 10 more pain doctors and they basically said the same...

Now I hear that the FDA guy is calling for a war on opiates because 100 people are dying each day from it. I'd like to know are they dying as a direct cause of opiate or are they dead and also a opioids prescribed user? This will make getting strong medication impossible. I would of said harder but it's next to impossible to get medicine for pain as it is. Now that you have a "positive " hit for heroine it's suppose to be impossible for you or "any" doctor to prescribe you any pain medication. I'm sorry for your pain and the trouble your having I really hope your other doctors who seem willing to help you through this and get things cleaned up so someone can prescribe you some relief.

I feel so bad for you and I wish I could help you. I am sure you went through horrible withdrawals. Did your doctor do a second test? Thee are false negatives and false+. Did he offer to give you medication to get you through the withdrawals? There are always avenues such as reporting them to the licensing authority. Request another test, find out what company does hair testing and what their percentage of error is. Suboxone can help with the withdrawals, but personally I wouldn't stay on it any longer than you have to. You are in my prayers!

I suggest that you seek treatment for the depression-- it is likely to help with pain as well. You need a support group. Please call your insurer for a referral for pain control. I agree a holistic health provider is the best option

It is tough being in such discomfort while at the same time trying to solve a complicated situation. "...i called about 10 more pain doctors and they basically sd the same..." - I recommend you avoid banging your head on the same wall and focus on conserving your precious work time and effort and try to accomplish much with the least effort. When I suggested below that you contact medical groups I had in mind for example your state office of the National American Medical Association. Also run a Google search on pain management and doctor referrals. Prepare a succinct description of your condition and circumstances that can be emailed to all of these folks and have a friend or family read it for effectiveness. Copy your local state and federal politicians and also send it to newspaper editors. Your goal is to reduce the continuing discomfort asap, so you want to think it terms of effectively shotgunning this to all that might help. Good luck!

Rochelle, you might consider going to an orthopedic doctor that specializes in problems of the spine. Also in recent years, there have been many practices of anesthesiologists that also deal with pain emanating from the spine. One of those practices may be beneficial to you. The tingling and numbness you're experiencing in your legs may be due to a problem in your lumbar spine that is compressing or irritating your sciatica nerve. The sciatica nerve is the largest and longest nerve in your body and runs from your lumbar spine all the way down both legs. Either one of these type of doctors, provided they specialize in the spine, should be able to help you with your neck and shoulders plus your lower back and legs. If you can get help with those, it would take care of most of your problems. I will warn you, these type of problems don't always get better quickly. So be patient, it will be worth it. A note about your neck and shoulders: often these problems are merely caused by tight muscles, although they are so painful you would swear it has to be far more serious. I spent 15 years in terrible pain after a head-on automobile collision. Once I got really serious about doing the appropriate exercises, pushing myself well beyond the point of pain, only then did my pain subside and has not returned many years later. You should be able to find neck exercises on the internet, but if not, ask your primary care doctor to provide you with some. Good luck to you.

Yes they did do another drug panel on me but will not return my calls...and my kidney doctor even requested my records and what they sent him was the one i already had and showed to him, so they are going to call and fax them again and specify all of my records! thankfully i didnt have to go thru withdrawals...they sent a script in for it, but i didn't even get that for 3 or 4 days cuz i didnt want to be on it and be accused again of doing illicit drugs!! I just want to clear my name of these awful accusations!! And YES i also do other things to help with my pain, its not just the pain medicine!! i take many vitamins, use heat, ice so on..... i dont know what good it would do for me to report them they have that right not to treat me!! And yes i realize there are people dying from overdoses but they are dying from illicit drug overdoses and that's not legal...so i don't know why i or anyone has to suffer becuz of some *****! i have never failed a drug panel in the 10 yrs i have been going! Never missed an appt....and always had my bottles with the correct medicine in them, that's why i don't see why i am not getting punished!

I'm so sorry to hear about all your medical conditions.Unfortunately I have condiitons from my head to my toes, seriously! I am a fall risk from grand mael seizures, manic/bipolar/schitsophrienic, poor eyesight, extreme dental work needed, stomach problems: i do not have bm's sometimes up to 2 weeks or more, so i seen a specialist, and the test shows a large mass (poop)in my large intestintestine and a 1,5cm hernia so i need a colonoscopy i have RA in both knees, degenerative arthritis in my shoulder and my feet hurt so bad to walk on them, my insurance co. gave me a top grade walker/or seat for family to push me around. my life is so limited. I fall constantly, i have to have someone with me at all times. i have insomnia, etc nothing compared to your situation. find a pain management dr in your area, take your records. find one til you find one you get a good vibe from, you know, someone you gel with. gl

My first reply was to to advisde you to get Suboxone for the withdrawals. I don't know how old this message is but if you are going through withdrawals Suboxone does miracles. then three or four days later stop. Again I am in your prayers and I hope your doctor wakes up to his the torture he out you through. HE IS AN A##hole.

I just went to request my record's, HE GOT SHUT DOWN!!! HE CLOSES THE FIRST OF OCTOBER!!! Still does not help me any, and I have not been able to find another pain doctor. I went to one and he refused to even see me, due to my old doctor! I do not know what I am going to do. I have ANOTHER surgery for major nerve damage in my arm on the 15th, but the surgeon does not seem to know who to recommend me to after the last PM doctor refused to see me ! I DON'T want to go in and lie to a doctor, or anyone as far as that goes, I just still do not know what to do! Thank you very much for being kind, a couple of people that replied were just MEAN!!!

lucylove... in response to your solutions...yes i did go back to my last clinic and they have since hired a new pa and that is who i saw...everything was going relatively good until the end of the visit when he sd he needed to get my records, and was he going to find anything that i needed to let him know about before he got the records...so i came clean and told him i was not going to lie about it..and i told him what had happened he then sd he could not give me anything because of the positive--regaurdless that i had been a patient in that office for about a year and half and NEVER had any problems(positive test, no missed appt, always had my btls for my count)! they as well gave me a drug screen which of course was negative! the reason i left this clinic was because my main doctor got done and i did not care for the other doctor....my first and last visit with him was about how much he was going to cut my meds!!! and i went along with it for about 7 or 8 months and then just decided it was time for me to find a new doctor...and yes i kick myself in the a** everyday for making the decision! had i not tried another doctor i would not be in this situation now!!
as for the other clinic that i got the positive test from, they did a repeat test which came back negative(no surprise to me)! but will not return my calls ..and all they could say about the positive test is it was positive and thats that!!! they were suppose to recommend other doctors to see and never did! it took my kidney doc to request my records in order to get the second results!! so i last conversation i had with them they told me they could NOT treat me for pain but they would be(yeah kinda comical) i told them NO i was all set, i am NOT a heroin addict never even seen the stuff! dont need to ever see it im all set with that as well!
so yes i have done all that you sd, with no positive outcome!
No other doctor would treat me because i had that positive drug screen....the only person that would remotely do anything to help is another doctor who is in my primary docs office...its not what i want but cant be too picky at this point...for the time i will see him and let all this die down then try to fine another doctor!

I need to add a correction about the age of 90 that I stated in my below response. I apologize..... and I want to say again (before I might be judged harshly) that I am in NO WAY passing judgement or any ill will in my statements..... but, I just see several "possible" solutions to the problem. And don't forget... you can't go into either office like a raging bull! You need to be calm, and sincerely ask for help and suggestions about where do you go from here... I am in a wheelchair from being crushed by a horse.....so I know pain. I wouldn't be here commenting if I were not living it! Some days, I think it would be easier to just do an amputation from the waist down. I liked the advice from someone below about a malpractice attorney, and I also liked the advice about keeping in touch with your primary care doctor. Although I have just found them to not be comfortable prescribing the medications I need, I would still keep them posted. As for the person that recommended "yoga". That is a good one!!! If it is working for you.... then God bless to the highest. But...for others, it's just not quite a possibly right now.....each person, their own thing, in their own time..... Again, I really wish you the best. I don't know how I got so fortunate to be honored with the pain doctor I have now..(well, I have been going to the same damn place since my first riding fracture at age 9. I am 45 now. And yes, sometimes his assistants can act a little b****y! But, they know nothing of my history except what they see in my records. And quite simply, I just could care less how b****y or judgmental they can be. Let ONE of them live the life we do! I can assure you, they would be walking the same path. And as one of my doctors said "nothing in life is certain...so the people who judge you, just pray that nothing ever happens to put them in this situation". Because one sunny day I walked into the barn, and a trail ride later I was being airlifted to the hospital!!! That certainly wasn't penciled in on my "to do" list that day. Bless, and find comfort soon.

Try "putting the tail between the legs" and go back to your previous clinic. First ask to speak with the manager of the office....then explain why you felt the need to leave and try a new place. Which I'm not quite sure why you didn't do this first if you felt unsatisfactory treatment of yourself ? Then tell them how your results came back...( provided they were always good at the old clinic ) And then ask to return to your previous doctors care. After all, you left there correct ?
I don't mean to sound harsh..... I really really do not, but to me.. this would seem like a common sense approach , maybe not ?
If you dont want to go that route , then request to have a conference about your results with the doctor at the new clinic...yes you can, they are not God,and you may request access to an appointment, (especially with confusing test results). provided you have never had these results on any other test previous ... or request your records with the test results included, and yes, you can most certainly do that too, they belong to you !
Then take those to your last doctor, that for whatever reason you decided to leave. And another question that puzzles me.... if you were getting your meds on a regular basis from the first clinic, why would you try somewhere else ???? I would think by 90 years old you would be past the phase of "stigma" or "what anyone thought of you"
As long as they gave me the medicines I needed to have a functioning life.... stigma me all you want !!!! Again, I don't want to seem judgmental or question your decisions, but i feel that there is more to this story than what was written. Maybe not....but there are at least three immediate common sense approaches you could have taken long before your meds ran out. Please keep me updated on how things are going.... and if I can be of any help.

I can hardly get out of bed let alone do yoga, are you kidding me. I hope one day you will not come to the point that I am at. I was always active until I broke my ankle and after 12 surgeries still am not any better, actually worse because I suffer from RSD because of all the surgeries.

Pam please do not give up. I am praying for you. I like you can not get a prescription for pain medication and I suffer from RSD an incurable nerve pain from multiple surgeries. My docs hands were tied (so he said) because of the new regulations on pain meds. He said we have the people on heroin to thank for us not being able to get our meds. They put us all in a group the ones dying of heroin od are put with people with valid scripts. It makes no sense I have been to two pain clinics the second one I called to get an appointment the clerk answered the phone and told me "we don't hand out pills here". I had not even said anything and was greeted that way. I live in Michigan and am trying desperately to find someone to help me. If I succeed I will find out if they know of a pain clinic in Ohio to help you. Please keep me posted and I will try to find you and I some help. God Bless you
