Pharmacy Issued Prescription Incorrectly

Updated

I was prescribed Meloxican 15mg for knee pain. RX bottle indicated 1 tab/4 times daily. Took 30 pills in short amount of time. Also was told to take acetaminophen between RX if needed. Went to refill RX and pharmacist said that original RX was written to be taken 1 pill/1 daily. (She wondered why I was refilling so quickly) So now I am concerned if I have taken a toxic amount of meds. I called poison control and was told there was no actual data to indicate toxic amounts of this RX. No side effects other than a little nausea and diarrhea. I have stopped taking RX and acetaminophen now. Any thoughts if I may have any permanent kidney or liver damage? (took 30 pills in 12 days and 58 years old)

Hello, Yvonne! How are you?

It may have done some damage, but the only way to find out for sure is by informing your doctor of what happened, so they can do blood work. Liver enzymes will usually let them know if there's a problem.

Taking high amounts of it can also cause more blood thinning and increased risk of bleeding than usual, so you may experience easy bruising for awhile, as well as freely bleeding from a cut or scratch, so you should be aware to be careful, as reported by the FDA.

Have you had any stomach irritation? Ulceration is another concern.

Thank you Verwon! I have not taken the meds since. I have a follow up within the next couple weeks with the doctor. Actually, I feel fine (other than the original knee pain). I have noticed nothing out of the ordinary and have noticed no bruising. I was just so concerned at first because I don't take a lot of meds. This was sure a lesson learned.....KNOW what you have been prescribed! Thanks again!
