Pharmacy Woes

OK, I have a new one for you all. I just called my local (and only one in town) pharmacy to see which generic brand of Norco they carry. I am trying to get a pharmacy lined up for next month's refill so I don't get stuck with the one making me sick. They told me that they cannot share that information until I have a prescription on file with them (a new one). What? That is the most unreal response I have ever had from any pharmacy. Anyone else have this problem?

I've been told that as well when asking about the manufacturer for generic Xanax. The reason I was asking was because I discovered one brand didn't work for me at all, upsetting me quite a bit one month. I was wary of being stuck with that brand again. I know they say all generics are the same, but through experience, I don't believe that at all. I think they perceive that as drug-seeking behavior, but isn't everything perceived as drug-seeking these days??

I am just blown away with how they treat those of us who have written prescriptions from a medical professional for real conditions that require treatment. What do they want us to do...go to the streets for illegal purchases?

Sorry to hear about your troubling experiences with these pharmacies. In any other line of business this type of behavior and ethics wouldn't be tolerated for very long in my opinion. And as a paying customer, information on what you purchase should be readily available just like the nutrition label found on food packaging. Instead they make you purchase it and then give you all the information afterwards like it's some kind of secret.

In reality they probably figure that if you knew what manufacturer's brand/generic they carried, many customers would be more likely to turn away and go else where to find what they're looking for; which in many cases happens to be the streets. Hopefully in time, some of these irrational policies will begin to change as more patients are turned off by the lack of customer service.

Just spoke to my pharmacist and he told me to be sure to ask for the Qualitest brand of generic Norco...it is what I had been taking before and works find. I just think it is going to be hard to find now.

Pharmacists have been killed by people stealing drugs. They have to be extremely careful. Grocery store managers do not have the same problem. You can't compare the two.

Yes, but this pharmacist and employees know me as I have been going there for 5+ years. I live in a town of 3500 people.

Sandy, deal with only one pharmacist. The next time you're in there ask to speak to the pharmacist that filled your rx. Then ask him about the generics. When you have another rx call and ask to speak to that partcular pharmacist. Pharmacists don't remember customers like customers think they do. But, if you make it a point to deal with only one pharmacist and you speak to the pharmacist in person about a question, you have a better chance of them remembering you.
