Pain Management Telling Fibs.

Updated

Just released me today from the hospital. I had rapid heartbeats, short of breath, I am 70 years old. I have a pacemaker that I am dependent on. Except for some vitamin deficiency, they could not really find what was wrong. I have been taking 5mg oxycodone 3x a day, some days, only twice, for 4 years. I was at pain management for only 2 months. Today was my third visit.. Straight from the hospital. I was in a lot of pain due to Costrochronditus this month because of the way they gave me a steroid shot in my back. (I had to lay on my chest) The first and second steroid shot didn't work either. I could not take a prendisone pill because of the steroid shot, so I had to take extra pain med. I had called my Pain management and told them that I was going to do that. So I get to the pain management today and they told me they could not give me anymore because I had marijuana in my first U/A from them! I do not smoke marijuana. I have heart disease for Gods sake! I DO NOT Smoke cigarettes. I avoid people who do. I won't even let people smoke in my vehicle. The primary reason I go to pain management is for spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, Chosto, restless legs. This is not fun. Why on earth would they lie to me? I am upset now and I am worried that I am going to have to go through withdrawal. I do also have gabapentin 600 mg. I see where that might help.

I am so very sorry about what happened to you!

There are actually many medications that have been known to show such results for marijuana, some examples include Advil, Aleve, some PMS tablets, some migraine medications, Dexilant, Indomethacin and many more.

Had you taken anything else, other than the Oxycodone or Gabapentin?

This has happened to many people, sadly enough and it may even be due to their using a cheap, unreliable test. Not all of them are actually certified.

If you can post back with more information, I'll happily try to help you get to the root of this.

Old sick lady, you aren't suppose to take more medication than you are prescribed. If or when something comes up you are suppose to talk to your pain management dr Before you take the meds differently than they are prescribed. You calling and telling them that you had taken more might also have been a factor in you being dismissed. It may be extremely difficult for you to finc a dr that will prescribe you pain meds because they will want a copy of your medical records.

Thanks for your reply. I am doing fine without the pain meds. I was so horrified by what they were saying that I just left. I am allergic to Aspirin, NSAIDS, and a bunch of other things. I have had many U/A's at my GPs office because I have an ongoing problem with infections. None of the things that you mentioned were taken by me. I had a battery of blood work at the hospital too. Having never been at pain management before, I certainly didn't expect them to challenge me like that, especially since I had so obviously come from the hospital and wasn't well and still am not well. 4 days without pain med has not been as bad as I expected. I had the worst night last night of all. Restless legs, couldn't get to sleep, fibro pain in my arms and legs and of course my legs. I do have anxiety med but it is long acting, so can't expect it to work right away, but I don't ever want to return to a situation like that again. I believe that they lied to to me because their steroid shots didn't work and they could not then carry on giving me those at 2500 a pop! $5000. So far. Pretty good scheme if you ask me. It's no wonder my GP took two years to send me there. Costochrondritus is not an easy pain to deal with. Usually I can head it off with one or two prendisone pills, but could not take it because of the prendisone in my back. I told her on the phone that I was going to do that. I didn't have a choice. It's not like I took 20 extra pills, just 5 over a 3 day period. Costo is like having a heart attack all day long. No one should suffer like that, it's like cruelty to animals. Instead of not helping they should have either seen me or told me I could take some more. I would not let anyone go through that if I could help.

Unhooked, since you came straight from the hospital, chances are you were given meds there that affected your drug panel. Did you have proof that you had come straight from the hospital and had been inpatient there for however long?

@BL I did come straight from the hospital, and still had on my wrist band and had my discharge records with me. However, except for the runs, it's a week now, I am doing Fine. Day 3 was the worst of it and I guess I will just suffer from now on.
