Oxycontin Op Duration 40mg Cut In Half

Updated

Given the protective qualities of the new Oxy OP, if you cut, say a 40mg tab in half, does it still release the drug slowly? I noticed there is no warning label on the bottle saying do not chew. In other words, given the new formulation, if cut in half does it still retain its slow release quality?

Retaining their time release properties, even if someone tries to cut them in half, crush or chew them is exactly how they are supposed to work.

However, it is still not recommended that you alter your dosage, without your doctor's approval.

Oxycontin contains the very powerful narcotic Oxycodone.

Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and dry mouth.

I have taken one 80mg oxycontin and 1/2 of an 80mg (I cut an 80mg in half) every 12 hours for over a year. cutting the new 0p in half does not change its effect. I have never crushed one. I suffer from sever degenerative disc disease since 1989 L4 -S1 and C3-C6. I had one back surgery that helped a little. Thank God for pain medication

I have a 20 mg op for pain. Can I cut it in half tonight. I don't want the whole thing. I will call my doctor tomorrow and get it lowered. It's not that high of a dose already as i'm told. So can I just cut it in half this one time? thanks

Yes you can cut it in half. The purpose of Oxycontin OP is to prevent the pill from being abused. Thus, cutting, chewing, attempting to crush it, etc. will have no effect on the time release characteristic of the pill.

That being said, 20 mg is considered a low dose of oxycodone for someone who is in moderate to severe pain. I wouldn't recommend operating heavy machinery until you're familiar with how a particular dose will effect you, but other than that you're in the clear.

I've been on narcos for 6 years. Bottom line, it just doesn't work anymore. I've tried them all. I have been unable to convince my doctor that my tolerance is sky Friggen high. He refuses to up the dose of the OxyContin from 20mg. & Percocet. I've been cutting the 20's in half and taking both. Now I'm cutting up to four at a time and taking them along with the percs. Still doesn't help. I hate those stupid fentanyl patches. Sweat a little it falls off. I just don't know what to do. Am I going to have to move on to the only narcotic pain killer that might work? Heroin? I know it sounds stupid but I really need some help and I'm not getting it. Out of desperation at one point I cut eight of the 20's in half and took those along with four percs to no avail. If I can take that much oxy and feel no relief it feels as if I have zero choice any longer. I have also considered marijuanna. But I live in a state where it's still illegal and wouldn't know where to begin to find it. Any ideas at all would be helpful.

It's a really hard thing!
I was on Oxy 80 (6 a day)
And Roxycodone 30mg (12 per day)
Valium, Ridilin, Cymbalta, Miralax, and more. I was doing ok! However the doctor & other staff knew that I was at the max for my condition. The doctor began reducing all my meds. This cost my job, and almost my marraige!
The end result was;.... After the reduced amount of meds, I realized that after such a long time on these meds, my meds were not treating the pain anymore, they were only treating the symptoms of withdrawal. I quickly got used to the reduced amount of medication. When I say quickly I mean approximately 4 to 6 months. At the time I figured the doctors office was screwing with me because I pissed off one of the nurses! Now, I'm on one 10th of my original medication dosages.
I'm not able to go to work yet, however I do get some relief from the medication that I'm taking. It is my goal to try to survive with no narcotic pain medication. There are other treatments available, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. For reasons forced on me I found that epidural is a very good treatment for pain. I'm speaking from experience when I say, it's really hard to put the addiction aside and just treat the pain! It takes a lot of willpower, but if you really want to get off the pain medication try epiduras or other like injections. Cymbalta is also something that can be a very big help while going through this process.
If you can manage to clean out your system and start from scratch the medicines will start to work again on you. Good luck to all of you

You may to switch up to an implant which delivers morphine into your systems. Ea ch month the doctor will fill up the implanted device and it will last you for one month. In the alternative, you can have him switch you to 30 mg morphine tablets.

What state do u live in? And have u asked your doctor about oxymorphone .

Whatever state you're in, cannabis is waaayyy better of a choice than heroin. It's also not going to ruin your life. Please please please don't start using heroin out of desperation. I get the desperate part and being in pain, but find another doctor before turning to that crap. Weed on the other hand, is a great pain reliever and at least somewhat legal (medical marijuana) in most states. Do the research and hope all goes well for you.

I was in a bad auto accident back in boynton beach nine months ago and dislocated my L-5 & L-6 disks and started on oxycontin 40mg twice a day and dilaudin 6mg 6x a day (30s are harder to find just go to 40) and from day one i went to a CVS in Boca Raton (where i was living BUT my license showed a Delray Beach Address over 20 miles away) i had no problem. I then moved to Fort Lauderdale, still, with the same license to my local cvs. Just handed her my new script from my new pain managment doctor (just showed him past records and he put me back on everything cause i am allergic to Tylenol and ibprofin*hint*) and my oxycontin discount card from perdua pharmaceutical. They didnt have it this was on a friday so the pharmacist said come back monday when they get it in. So because my records with cvs showed me filling oxys and dilaudin before, they ordered them for me. Asked how many i need per month and said to fill it on the same day each month and they will keep it stocked. Im a 30 year old real estate agent with purple hair lol. No judgement was made. As long as u have a valid reason and records you have taken these types of meds before you should be fine now. Things have calmed down

If that doesnt help, i called up my insurance company (blue cross blue shield of fl ppo) and told them i cant fill my two scripts down here. They gave me the address to their central pharmacy. I overnighted it monday and got it back thursday morning filled with no issues. These two routes helped me through all the junkie judgement and I hope it helps some of you guys too!!

They say that cutting an OP in half doesn't change its slow release qualities. and I've tried. I've cut six pills in half with no change. But as far as I'm concerned OxyContin or Oxycodone sucks. I've always had a pain level that hovered around a six out of ten while taking them. I finally convinced my pain doctor to put me on something different. Now I take a slow release dilaudid and a quick release for breakthrough pain. My pain level dropped to a one after I started them. I feel like a new man. C

You can try fioricet with codeine. Great pain reliever if you can get it.

Its fine if you split the pll. Then it is 20mg for 6-12hours of pain relief because the pill will still retain its time release properties even if split. Cutting it just reduces the amount of drug recieved.

Greg, ask your regular doctor (general practitioner) recommend you see a pain specialist. Then you can find a pain dr. local to you and he will give you pain meds. Not before sending you for MRI's & X-rays.

Morphine is by far the most horrible addictive (physical not mental) drug and is really close to heroin. My Father was still able to build things and do stuff on oxycodone. He made a mistake talking to his new nurse practitioner. He was old and it never occurred to him to abuse a drug ever. He was needing an increase in his oxys and they switched him to morphine. He complained that the morphine didnt give that 'kick' like the oxys. He meant that they didnt work but the stupid practitioner decided that was "drug seeking" language and cut all his oxys for morphine. They also let him run out of morphine a lot, so he went through painful withdrawal and he never left the bed after that. Doctors started pushing morphine as "not as addictive" because the big pharmaceuticals can make it much cheaper than oxys. Morphine kills you off fast and my Dad, who was strong before, became weak and lifeless on Morphine. Keep your Morphine.

It seems to me you have a drug habit. Especially, when you said "If I don't get my way then I will go get Heroin. Do you hear yourself talking????? Your problem is your body has developed a high tolerance level and that is why you can't get out of pain. Why are you taking that much pain medicine to begin with? Do you realize that your kidneys are going to shut down and you will die. Take for example if you had a heart attack the doctor is not going to give you MORE drugs. You will be laying there in total pain. Any good doctor would take you off the drugs.....If it is your back then go get it operated on and fixed for good. GET OFF THE DRUGS....

If you cut a 40mg opana in half does it become a 20 mg. pill then? I have taken 2 10 mg. of opana which would be 20 mg and been able to function fine & I've cut a 40 mg opana which you would think make it a 20 mg & when I did that I was extremely messed up. Why would the 40 cut in half be SOOOO much stronger then 2 10's...I would think that they both would be considered 20...the 40 cut in half made me node off & wasn't able to function!

Do not go up. Telling you. Just like above. Once again you hit the same problem even if 3 80s a day and 5 30 mg oxycodones. It' just blows. When you are that dosed and it's still not work. Dialing off is sooooo hard. Don't do it man. You will regret more later. Great for 3 months than same place. That is why smart doctors don't like to go up. But they should all prescribe 2-3 days ahead so you don't go through living hell. Now that is bad management. They do that and it's definitely ok 2 days prior. But don't go up. Also why not take 4 20 instead of cut 4 into 8. Same thing. However is you cut all up it does have more area to pull from So won't last as long but a little more power. Slight.

Amen to that. I for one do not agree with heroin use. I just recently lost a very close relative from a heroin OD. The needle was still in his arm. He was found by his dad about 12 hours after his death. However, I genuinely can't stand a hypocritical, egotistical, cynical, website trolling, judgemental puke! This thread is rather old and not likely to even be looked at anymore. I stumbled across it because I am looking for answers regarding pain relief. My lumbar spine is so screwed up to the point it'd be easier to answer "What's NOT wrong with your lumbar," rather than "What's wrong with it?" Does anyone know of any non-addictive methods of treating debilitating back pain? I work, I'm a wife, a mother of 3, and I suffer from pain. Lots of it! That pretty much sums up my life :( I'd be willing to try pain medication if I knew for sure my body wouldn't develop a dependency, but from what I've read, that is like asking to find gold at the end of a rainbow! God bless all of you folks in pain! Prayers are with you!!
