Oxycodone Positive Test

Updated

I am on MSIR and a Fentanyl Patch for chronic back pain and multiple orthopedic surgeries. I also take Nuvigil, Zoloft, Enjuvia, Prilosec, and Diovan for hypertension, Once per day I take two over the counter Equate Headache Relief which is Aspirin (NSAID) and caffeine. On my way to my pain clinic monthly appointment, I took my MSIR - two - 30 mg., and my Equate Headache Relief -- I had put my Fentanyl patches on (2 x 100 mcg.) before I left home. All my routine medications I took the night before at bedtime. To my amazement, my routine drug screen at my pain clinic came up positive for Oxycodone which I have not taken for months. I am confused and suspicious that something isn't right at the pain clinic -- meaning -- something happened AFTER I handed my urine sample to the tech for testing -- either she labeled it wrong or someone has a vendetta out for me and put Oxycodone in my urine. At the pain clinic they quick test the urine for the doctor so he knows it is okay to refill my medications, and then they send that same urine away to the lab for a final report. It was the sample that went to the lab which came back showing Oxycodone -- nothing was said about the quick test having Oxycodone in it. I have never had this happen before and I want and need an answer. This whole thing is killing me -- I need to know what happened. I know what I put in my mouth and I definitely never took Oxycodone. Could any of the medications I take produce a false positive such as this. I am thinking of changing pain clinics because I know what medications I take and I am scared that my urine sample was altered in some way. Please, do you have an answer for this. I am 60 years old and have never had a problem like this before.

Yes, the other narcotics you take could cause a false positive for it, this has been known to happen on the less expensive, non-certified tests many times and there are a lot of posts about it happening on this website.

However, if you are that scared and upset, then by all means you should definitely look into changing clinics, so you may find somewhere that you can feel more comfortable.

Did the doctor refuse your refills?

No, they didn't refuse, but I had to take another urine screem just to show there was no Oxycodone in my system. I know there are some people who say: I swear I didn't do it" -- but I am saying this from the depths of my soul: "I never took nor had any Oxycodone, and have no idea how they came up with this". I truly want to get to the bottom of this because there is no way in hell anyone could have gotten that result from my urine. I wish I could ask for the urine and then have it shipped to a different lab, but what if they labeled my sample wrong and it wasn't my sample in the first place. Believe me, the person who I handed my sample to was not an educated person. When you talk to her she looks at you with a flank face like she is trying to comprehend what you are saying, but she just doesn't have the ability. She looks like she was left on the tilt-a-whirl too long as a baby. Believe me, if this person can add 3 numbers without using her fingers and toes, I would be shocked. I should have stood there until I saw her mark my sample with my name, but I handed it to her and left that part of the clinic to see the doctor. What gets me is that this happened in May, and I was seen in June, and nothing was mentioned. Then was I was seen the other day, it was brought up as an "oh yeah, we forgot to mention it, but in May there was a problem with your screen. This is what I am not understanding. This should have been brought up last month and maybe I would have had a chance to demand that they retest the urine, but if the urine wasn't mind to begin with, then I'm screwed. This whole thing isn't far. An alien would have had to visit me in the middle of the night and shove that Oxycodone down my throat or inject it, because that is the only way I would have gotten that in my system. This is just so unfair -- we are at their mercy. They know they can put anything in our chart or use any excuse to discontinue our medications, and we can't do anything about it. Even though I know I didn't take it, they have it on paper as being in my urine, and there is nothing I can do. Now, even if I change clinics, that will always be in my chart and I am always going to be judged as being "dishonest". Thanks for answering.

Why would your doctor employ such a person? If she is as bad as you describe, surely the doctor has been made aware. Had you complained previously? If so, that may go in your favor. Having said that, the U/As are pretty idiot proof. The cups and paperwork have matching, pre-labled numbers on them. Though I'm sure very few people actually check those numbers, we all should. Some doctor require the patient and/or one witness to be present while they remove the results strip and while being added to your chart. Very often if the patient is established, as long as nothing bad shows up, that's the end of it. Newer patients or those who have prior "dirty" U/As, the sample is sealed and sent to the lab and the lab presents a more detailed result. Some drugs dont show up in the screen. And adding a crushed up pill to fresh urine doesn't work. People who get the pills to sell on the street thought this would make it appear that they taking it for legitimate pain issues. Simply doesn't work that way, so no one could add a pill before pulling the result strip, trying to get a patient discharged. (And if you "pissed" (a little urine humor) off someone bad enough to go to such lengths, I'd think you would know it. I can't remember if you mentioned your history with this doctor, or how often you are screened, if all the sudden you have one dirty sample that would jump out at the doctor. He would, in fact, discuss it w/you. Not b/c he thinks you cheated on that test (more toliet jokes), but b/c he is looking for an explaination. Maybe two drugs, or an OTC med, herbal tea even! Hind sight is always better, but you can use this in the event that something like this happens again, dont hesitate to demand another test right then. At least speak up to the doctor and definitely voice your concern about the competency of this employee. When the doctor did mention it (weeks later! Unbelievable!), what was his tone? Mistrusting? Concerned that the results were wrong? And I wouldn't be so quick to change doctors. A new doc will need to see your chart (and thx to all of the bad guys out there, doctors are turning to those results first. They dont want to be counted among the pill mills. I apologize for this lengthy post, but the subject can mean the difference between your quality of pain mgt. Yes, I am a pain patient and have worked for the same pain management doctor for 22 years. Let us know the ouutcome. Good luck.
