Opana - Is It Really Non-addictive?

Updated

If Opana was designed to be non-addictive, how did my granddaughter become addicted to it; or did she? She is now in jail and says this is the drug she has been taking and paying $40.00 a pill for.

Opana contains the active ingredient Oxymorphone and I'm not aware of anything stating it was designed to be non-addictive, the possibility of being habit forming and abused is actually prominently warned about it the drug information monographs about it.

It is an opiate narcotic, therefore, it carries the same addictive risk as all the others do, such as Oxycodone and Morphine.

Are there any other questions?

The new formulation of Opana is Awful. I've been receiving reports of nausea and severe headaches. I believe it now contains naltrexone which could throw you into W/Ds if you chew it. If I were you I would try to get. my Roxy Rx upped and forget the ER drugs. The DEA is forcing manufacturers to harshen them up like the did with Contin.I am currently on #240 Oxycodone IR30 mg for cancer BTP along with #150 Fentora 600 mcg for acute pain. My disabled wife is rx'ed #360 Oxycodone 30s for her chronic pain. My non Dr. advice is to stick with the IRs, they are more easily controlled and have not been reformulated . . . Q

SHARON49ER is wrong about Opana being hydromorphone. Opana is actually oxymorphone, which is what oxycodone turns into by your liver. It is a very potent opiate. It is twice as strong as oxycontin, for example. If you were on 80mg of oxycontin, you would be prescribed 40mg. of Opana. I take 60mg. of Opana every 12 hours with 3, 10mg. generic oxymorphone for breakthrough pain as needed. I am in the process of getting the generic OpanaER's,as they do not have the timerx abuse concoction in the pill. It is like the original Opana before they changed the formula.

Who ever told you that is just plain Lying, I have been taking opana for 3 years after 4 spine operations. I recently quit and ended up in the emergency room almost died ! Be real careful. speaking from experience I took 3/40mg pills a day plus 30mg oxy for many years. And the new generic ones are great to crush and snort if your into that, I was. I highly suggest you stay away from them. good luck to your daughter!

First of all, why should anybody here care about your crackhead of a granddaughter? It is her own fault she is in jail and possibly addicted to opioids. Only pain patients should take opioid pain medicines. They are nothing to play around with. They are very unforgiving if you screw up using them.

In general, opioids are not addicting for pain patients who use them appropriately. If you have no pain and take them, then they can be very euphoric and very addicting.

Drug addicts love opana because it has an incredibly high bioavailabilty when crushed and snorted. It also gives a powerful high. Opana is the most potent oral opioid available next to methadone. But, drug addicts don't usually abuse methadone because of the way it works.

Your granddaughter is a crackhead drug abuser and the reason so many pain patients cannot get proper medical care. You better hope she listens and straightens her life out. Otherwise, she will probably overdose and die. All it takes is one miscalculation when abusing an opioid to pass away. Many drug addicts don't listen though. You may want to buy a plot and a coffin, so you are ready for the inevitable.

It can be addicting, if you abuse it. Like every other opioid pain medicine. They should not be used unless you have legitimate and bad pain. I don't know why people are so quick to blame opioid pain medicines. Abusing a pain medicine is a choice. If you choose to abuse pain medicines, then you have nobody but yourself to blame for any problems that stem from it.

Wicked. Any opioid pain medicine has addictive qualities. Usually a drug like Opana is prescribed as a long term pain management condition like cancer or people with bad spinal injuries. I've been taking opiod pain medicine for 7 years now due to traumatic spinal injuries from a bad accident which caused me to become permanently disabled. Even though I take my medicine as prescribed by my pain management physician, if I were to stop taking my meds, I would go through with withdrawal symptoms. What makes it worse is the people that take pain meds for recreational use to get the opiate "high" that occurs if your body isn't use to a regular dose. So with that being said, Opana is addictive. It was never made to be non-addicting. The new formula of Opana was made to be tamper resistant. It can not be ground up to be snorted or injected with a needle into the vein. I hope that this information helps you understand your granddaughters situation a little bit better. Good luck!!

The new reformulated OpanaER is not the one being sold and used by drug addicts. As mentioned above, they are basically abuse proof. Although, one could somewhat abuse it if they drank alcohol with it, which is a fairly common way opioids are abused. The drug addicts are abusing the generic versions of Opana ER. I would bet a million dollars this man's granddaughter is abusing the generic version.

I'm not sure how knowing which version of OpanaER his granddaughter is abusing helps, but I'm certain it is the generic ER version.

Also, it does not matter if the drug addicts are use to a regular dose or not. Most do not abuse medicines like OpanaER by taking them orally anyways.

Well Timmy2, you owe me a million dollars... If you people would look, you would see the post was from May 2011... There wasn't a generic then... In fact she was on the original Opana then... You are all posting a bit late! And half of you don't even have correct information about the meds and their chemical names... Gave me a good laugh... So thanks!

Didn't see the post date. The post was at the top, so I assumed it was current. I also assumed it was current because of all the previous comments. At least I am familiar with opioids. Although, you are correct that it had to be the original version. To be fair, there is not a significant difference between the old version or the generic though.

You get sick if you insufflate it. I think they should add it to focus but of course the pharm CO would loose money.

I can't spell too well so don't be a grammar Nazi. I know people personally that abuse pills and you are wrong about the new formula. All the abuse proofing did was keep people from insufflating it. If they chew it, it breaks the time release and they still can abuse it through other means. All this complaining about people abusing them does absolutely nothing. People will take drugs recreationally no matter what. And the govt. will always prosecute people. If people want to live their lives that way, what's it to you? Some of these addicts prob have their own reasons for taking them, even if it's in the pursuit of happiness it shouldn't be a problem. It's the government that is restricting them, not the addicts.
