On Metformin 500mg Twice A Day With Side Effects

Updated     17

Bobby Says:

My Doctor just recently Diagnosed me with Type 2 Diabetes a Month ago. So i was prescribed and have been taking Metformin 500 MG twice a day with a Meal. My first meal of the day is always a light one, if any and my 2nd Meal always in the Late Evening is generally med to heavy. But I find that since taking this drug that I have been sleeping alot, always feeling lazy and have been experiencing Heart Burn at times. But I don't think that I have Lactate Acidious that they warn of. Is this the Normal side effects of this Drug? And how long does it last? As I have noticed that if I stop taking the Medicine my Meter Readings are always above 200 after eating anything, so I probally do need to take the Medication.

WHen you are diabetic, it is always advisable to eat more than just two meals a day, you should eat 3 well-balanced meals and have a health snack or two.

Doing so helps to better balance your blood sugar and is much healthier for you, overall.

As to the sleepiness, yes, this can be a side effect of the medication, however, it could also partly be from the fact that your body has been used to running at a high sugar level and is now having to readjust to a lower level.

It should, eventually, taper off and not be as severe, as your body gets used to these changes. It may take a few weeks, however.

And yes, the heartburn can also be a normal side effect of the medication.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

Side affects yes- Says:

I was on Metformin for several years. It helps with the Blood sugar. Not knowing the side affects was the excessive wet burps. It was uncontrollable. I may not of explained it completely to my Doctor. So I was put on Nexum.
$$$$ over and over.
I was just taken off of the Metformin. Very little to no wet burps. Thinking about getting off the Nexum $$$. Since the wet burps are maybe once or twice a week instead of 5-6 times or more a day.
But - my sugar is climbing and the new med doesn't seem to work as well as the Metformin.

You maybe discribing it as heartburn. But it's not!

Good Luck!

I want to tell you to all of you to be careful with this medication because some people can show some Metformin side effects and alergic reaction.
Allergic reactions can be really dangerous and can cause, swelling of tongue, mouth, face and lips, also dark urine can appear, very strong pains in the abdomen, dizziness, difficulties when urinating. I experience few of this and it was living hell... i am now on Glipizide

I saw your question while searching for side effects of Metformin HCL. I started taking it a few weeks ago, and my hair is falling out at an alarming rate. Did you get an answer to your inquiry and if so, would you mind sharing it with me. Many thanks. Fran

Should Metformin be taken as precaution to diabetes? Blood sugar high but not diabetic. Dr put me on 500mg per day of Metformin twice per day as a preventative to help lower blood sugar. I had another Dr tell me I shouldn't be taking it as a preventative. Also concerned about side effects.

I am going to the doctor today because I have been getting on and off swelling of the tongue, lips and face. Since it happens at night after supper, which is the time I take Metformin, I am now thinking this could be a side effect from this medication. All this swelling on and off only started after I got on this medication.

My feet have been stinging/burning for 7 years, but every tests always said 'no diabetes', until now. I'm having bad side effects, but not sure if it's the Metformin alone, or the combination. Just told I have type 2 diabetes, and put on 500 mg of Metformin 2 times a day, 600 mg of Irbesartan once a day and 75 mg of Lyrica 2 times a day. Only been taking these for 3 days! I just spent most of today on the toilet and my head in a trash basket (both ends going) so very sick, with major chills, like the worse flu like symptoms ever. Took a nap and now feel well enough to get on the computer to look for answers.

Harvey (2011) and Laura (2014), I was placed on Metformin 500 mg two mos ago as a precautionary for Diab 2, although my numbers were not really a concern, just a bit of excess weight my doctor could not understand. All my others numbers were great, even cholesterol is 70; I eat little amounts and very healthy choices, and have all my life. My first question to him and the pharmacist was is there a risk of taking this if my body does not need it. Oh, no, it is safe. Well, just about five weeks into the medication, I have suffered sudden and total hearing loss in my right ear, requiring several 8-hr road (round) trips to UAB @ B'ham, three painful procedures, still to no avail, and have to return yet for further assessment(s). Am very concerned that Metformin is the mystery link since every thing else has been ruled out.
