To prevent them falling off, you might want to try using some waterproof medical tape to help keep them on, they also sell a clear sticky patch that can be used over them and it is fine to do so, unless your doctor has given you specific instructions not to.

Learn more Fentanyl details here.

Learn more Suboxone details here.

As to the Suboxone, along with the narcotic Buprenorphine, it also contains Naloxone, which is used to help prevent the abuse of other opiates, while someone is under treatment with it, thus you have to be in full withdrawal, before you take it, or it can throw you into severe, dangerous withdrawals.

So, you'd have to wait a few days, until you are in miserable withdrawals from the Fentanyl, before you can take Suboxone and then, to return to the Fentanyl, you'd have to wait several days after taking the Suboxone, which means that doing this is probably going to cause more trouble than it's worth.

Thank you...the tegaderm i have tried but are a bit expensive for my budget. I have decided if one comes off i will just where the next one for 72 hours instead of 48. I don't want to have to go thru a whole ordeal...plus it wasn't given to me by doc so drug interactions are a favor. A friend gave me 7 and said they were good for pain but i am not onto taking chances and defined.ity not into withdrawl. However after 2 and a half months on the fentanyl i am beginning to experience extreme fatigue...was on methadone and oxycodone/oxymorphone for eight years and never had this before. Not sure if this med is for me. Do you have personal experience w this medication?

I was on fentanyl 100 patch also, I took my first suboxone 20 hours after I removed it an was feeling so much better! Don't believe what all these wanna be doctors tell you.If you waited 48 to 72 hours to take one you've gone through the worst part and shouldn't take anything.Good luck on what ever you decide!

Hey Sick Doc " no bad pun I tented . After 2 years of 16 my of sub strips my pain receptors are all bleeped up. I just wanted to feel I depressed for at least one day in my misrable life from opiates to subs so I took 3 50mcg patch s sucked on one and planted the others they get u high real quick has in not depressed high but wear off in an hour. The strange part is I was an alcoholic for 25 years without the dope I never needed it even for a broken leg beer and Tylenol did wonders on the brain then one minor finger surgery where I had no choice to take Oxys and with in a year I lost my craving for alchoal I never thought in my dreams that would happen. It's been 3 years since I drank and I want to but afraid cause at the end of my drinking I was getting hangovers by my third drink and even 6 blues at the time wouldn't get rid of the pain. It's a strange brain we all have I know you would agree that even though I can't give a percentage some of the withdrawal pain is in your head. I'm not proud of taking fentanyl to get high and for what a temporary high that wears off quicker than blues when you suck on the patches . Well keep up the great advice cause real mds have no idea what pain meds really to people. Need to be a user or an abuser to really show just cause . Take care Doc" thanks for reading I hope!!

Yes The naloxone in suboxone will put u in withdrawal but only if u take one within 1 through about 10hours after u take off the patch or stop taking methadone within at least a day they say that it could kill u if u take a suboxone within like a couple weeks but that is overkill i was always good within a day or two easy with done im not quite sure about the fentanyl as much as i am the methadone. Naloxone is some nasty business i overdosed on methadone and xanax they shot me up with pure naloxone and adrenaline and the paddles but the naloxone was the worst its like going through a week of withdrawels all at once its gnarly. but this is just my experience and advice take or leave it.

Question: For the first time today I tried Fentanyl for my pain. I cut a 75mcg fentanyl patch in half and put one have one my arm and stored the rest away. I wore the half a patch for about 11-12 hours and just took it off. Would it be okay to take a piece of a suboxone strip in 10-12 hours for pain and withdrawal? Or how long do I have to wait to take the suboxone after taking the patch off?

Warning! I just went through this yesterday. I was on fentanyl for a month 100 mg a day. Took my patches off saturday night well technically monday morning about 1 or 2 am. I dosed again till about 4 am so that i could sleep through the night. monday afternoon at about 2pm i took my first dose of suboxone about 20mg. Within ten minutes i began to spiral out of control. i didn't know what was happening but it was scary as s***. diarrhea, sweating profusely, severe pain, anxiety, uncontrollable shaking, restless leg syndrome, and all making normal withdrawal seem like a walk in the park. so i immediately hit the web and found out it was called precipitated withdrawal.. found lot of advice. most say ride it out it will get better and it does. the drug web sure says to take more in small intervals until symptoms dissipate, tried did not work! and most say DON'T DO IT. its now been at least 36 hours no opiates and 24 hours since last dose of suboxone. my symptoms have improved marginally but dr recommends waiting another 24/48 hours before taking again. the pharmacist said to take again 24 hours from last dose and should be fine, but doesn't give a 100 percent that i won't react again. so I'm now in normal withdrawal, which take it from me is a cake walk compared to precipitated withdrawal and am trying to hold out another day because the alternative is way worse. So moral of story is WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE IN FULL FLEDGED WITHDRAWAL NOT JUST STARTING TO FEEL WITHDRAWAL BEFORE TAKING SUBOXONE OR ANY DRUG CONTAINING BUPRENOPHINE. TRUST ME LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE! you will spare yourself the most horrendous crisis you could ever experience. if this keeps one person from experiencing precipitated withdrawal i have done so so much good. I had experience with suboxone and had never been aware of this aspect of it so take heed!

If i were you i would wait absolutely no less than 36 hours from when you remove patch. you have to account for the time it takes for it to work in through your skin and into your bloodstream and then out again. generally when you feel the onset of withdrawal is when you're safe to take suboxone. and take it from me you do not want to jump the gun on that. my last transition was from fentanyl and percocet to suboxin and I only waited 24 hours and immediately went into precipitated withdrawals. trust me my friend you've never felt any kind of withdrawal like precipitated withdrawal. it basically packs 3 days were the withdrawal symptoms into 12 hours. despite what anyone tells you once you're in that state there's nothing you can do about it except ride it out. so my advice is be sure you feel really really lousy before you take suboxone. that's the only sure fire way to know that you're ready to make the transition because that means the opiates are no longer at your opiate receptors and therefore can allow the burprenophine to take its place at the opiate receptors. good luck and be careful

After about 140 mg or less a day oxycodone habit, I was given 3 fentanyl patches 50 mg I wore these for about 6 days. I've been clean now for 55 hrs. About an hour or so ago I took about 1 mg of suboxone. I feel about the same, except a very slight headache which I used to get when taking subs before. Anybody know if its safe to take more?

Storm,

Go ahead and take another (1)mg. Try to do it with as low a dose of sub as possible. People, including dr's, take and prescribe way too high of dosages of bupe and then the patient can't get off the subs. You should be able to stabilize at 3mg or less having been in 50mcg patches. I have quite a bit of experience with these topics if you need assistance. Good luck.

I don't know where to turn right now so I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I have been addicted to pain killers for about ten years on and off. Every time I stopped before it was bc I went to detox or treatment. It's been about 33 hours now since I've taken anything n I expected to feel horrible by now. I have a bunch of subs but I'm not sure how long I have to wait to take sub? I'm really in shock that my withdrawal systems are not bad... still, I mean I feel weak n can't get comfortable. Is this normal? When can I safely take my suboxone? Please get back to me ASAP someone if u can. I need to figure this out.

Hi Painwarrior-

I would even wait longer than a couple days. I will tell you why based on my experience... so I voluntarily detoxed off Fentanyl 9 years ago (150 mcgs of Fentanyl patch every 60-70 hours / 400 mcg Fentanyl Actiq lozenges- 3 to 4 daily) and I had been on the Patches for about 7 years. I detoxed under the care of a very specialized Addiction Specialist and this man KNEW his stuff and what he was doing (checked in / visited every day / had in home nurses come by / spoke with my two caretakers daily). Because the Fentanyl Patch absorbs directly into your bloodstream, it is a part of your body. It's a chemical that your body has stored in its cells and all around the body. I took me TWO entire weeks of no patch before there was clinically ZERO trace of the opiate in my body.

DETOX SCHEDULE:
Day One: Patch came off and Actiq intake increased.
Day Six: No more Fentanyl period (done with Actiq) and started Dilaudid every 6 hours.
Day Ten: Dilaudid every 12 hours
Day Twelve: Dilaudid once a day (morning)
Day Fourteen: 1/2 Dilaudid every day
Day Sixteen: no pain meds PERIOD for 48 hours (and that's when things go real bad for me... but I made it through with the grace of God)
Day Eighteen: go to my Pain Management Specialist and begin 1st dose of Suboxone (which I had to take in quarters over a three hour period of time so he could assess any side effects / reactions.)

Listen my friend, trust me when I tell you that bc the Patch distributes that medicine into your blood stream, it takes a long time to completely exit the body. And the longer you've been on them, the longer it takes to purge your body of all the toxins. Think about all your organs just marinating in it for years. It takes WEEKS to completely clean them out and anyone who tells you differently doesn't know their specialty very well. The patches are constantly on our skin as to avoid withdrawals- I used to overlap mine the last 12 hours of each 72 hour period (per doctor orders) bc the last 12-15 hours, I got about 20% pain relief bc MOST of the medicine was already absorbed. So just think about that; we are NEVER without that crap going into our bloodstream. Completely different than ANY other type of med. Equate it to wearing an IV that is constantly pumping meds into your veins. YOU WILL NEED A COUPLE WEEKS for it to ALL be out of your body.

Can I ask you a question? WHY are you taking both of those drugs? No doctor would ever prescribe BOTH the Fentanyl patch AND Suboxone to ANYONE so that means you're getting it on the street or from two different doctors. PLEASE just stick with one doctor for pain management. Mixing drugs without their guidance is dangerous.

I wish you the best of luck and would advise you to NOT mix any narcotics without being under the constant care of a doctor. The withdrawals from the Fentanyl can cause death all on its own- it's why they made me have constant care takers and called / visited daily. And had my mom and husband not been with me 24/7 monitoring my BP and temp and HR, I would've had to be admitted.

Take care friend. Best of luck!
MBK

For 15 years I've been prescribed 150 mcg Fentanyl patches from a very reputable Orthopedic pain manager. My pcp told me he could help. After 24 hours without Fentanyl he gave me half dose of Suboxone. Within 5 min I was thrown into the worse withdrawal hell and to the emerg. room. you have to wait 3-to-4 days and be in full withdrawals before taking Suboxone. Sorry for the news.

I agree. I will lay here in withdrawal and be uncomfortable because I threw myself into withdrawal twice already and I haven't taken anything in 2 days. I still won't touch my prescription of subs as that was by far the worse thing ever. I have been on subs for 3yrs and I relapsed for about 2 months. I had a drug panel come back and it just said 'FAILED FENTANYL'. Today is 2 days and I'm terrified.

I call bulls*** sir or mam. At least in my experience and my brother's, you should wait before taking fentanyl if on suboxone but at most you don't feel it as strong the first day. But I take suboxone before the fentanyl wears off. At least for me there is very little withdrawal. I try to switch at night and sleep through the worst of it. It's so mild I don't even wake up but everyone is different and I only take 2 mg twice a day. Hope that helps. Start low, you can always add but never take it back. Stay safe out there.

I waited 24 after last patch to take a suboxone. Oh my good i needed to wait longer. It instantly through me into withdraws.it was worse then regular withdraws. In my opinion fentanyl is just to strong for the suboxone to even work. But what do i know.

It's already a second pass drug bc of how it was administered. So half the metabolism of it is already done. Also more fluids and any food u can hold down that's light, no red meats...lol, will help speed it up.
